SENIOR B CAMOGIE OPEN CUP 26/6/03 Round Tower 3-6 St Vincents 1-3 The Towers Senior B team had the final match in their group of the Open Cup last night (Thurs. 26th) against St Vincents. This victory secured Towers the top place in their group with maximum points. The first half started with an early goal from St. Vincents quickly mounting the pressure on the already nervy Towers side. Towers thankfully responded with 3

some fine scores from Niamh, Lorraine, Claudia and Sharon. The majority of the play in the first half seemed to be in Towers possession around mid field and the half forward line. The score at half time was Towers 2 5 to Vincents 1 - 1. The score line really didn't reflect how much better this Towers side was compared to the Vincents side. The second half started with the Towers defense coming out all guns blazing to keep the Vincents forward line at bay. Fine performances came from Sligo, Ann, Louise, Trish K, and Lisa. Woman of the match has been deservedly given to Fiona Kearney whose determination and strength kept the Vincents forward line from expressing their ability. Mary O'Reilly took the frees on the night with a 100% record securing a goal and two points from frees. A number of Vincent’s players felt the strength of Mary as she charged towards the goal throughout the match. All in all this was a good win for the Senior B Team, but for a lot of the team it was a disappointing display of our real potential. We've a week to go until the Championship Semi Final where there will be no room for nerves or too many players feeling off form. All efforts will be needed to go now into accessing the real potential within this team so that we can bring ourselves to a highly likely Championship Final as well as a Cup Final! The Championship Semi Final is scheduled for Friday July 4th with an un-named venue as yet....there is a chance that this date may change so keep in touch with anyone involved in the Camogie panel to get an accurate time and venue for this match. Support would be appreciated from all club members to help bring about the enthusiasm and real energy of this major Towers Camogie occasion!!

MINOR FOOTBALL LEAGUE 18/6/03 Round Tower 2-4 Kilmacud Crokes 1-11 It was déjà vu at Silver Park last Wednesday as Towers again suffered a narrow defeat against the County Champions. After a long break from competitive football both teams showed signs of a lack of match practice and fitness. A strong diagonal breeze favoured Towers in the first half but Crokes were first off the mark with a well taken goal after five mins. Ian ward replied with an excellent point from a long range free. With Dan Martyn and Ciaran O’Dwyer assigned to watch Crokes danger men Conor Noone and Mark Vaughan, any scores Crokes achieved were hard won. By the twentieth minute Crokes had raced into 1 –4 to 0-2 lead and looked to be in a commanding position, but when Eoin Ryan bustled through for a goal following a good pass from Liam Connolly the outcome of the match was in the balance. The half time score was Crokes 1-6 Towers 1-2. Crokes kicked over two quick points on the resumption, but then Towers hit a purple patch with both Peter Nyhan and Liam Connolly hitting excellent points from play. In the next attack David Whelan won a good ball just outside the penalty area and his shot rebounded off the upright and in off the goalie to leave just the minimum between the teams with 15 mins left. Towers dominated the next 5 mins with Liam Connolly forcing a good save from the Crokes keeper and Brian McLaughlin was most unlucky when his fisted effort was stopped on the goaline by a defender who knew little about it. A few more Towers attacks broke down when scores seemed on the cards and it was a very frustrating time for players and supporters as this game was there for the taking. After their determined efforts Towers tired and Crokes were on top for the final few minutes and they added three points without reply.

The Towers players can be rightly proud of their efforts and it proves that they are one the top minor teams in the county at present. Team;

Anthony Banks, David Finneran, Ciaran O’Dwyer, Conan O’Broin, Paul Maguire, Dan Martyn, Philip Bowe, Ian Ward (0-2), Liam Connolly (0-1), Peter Nyhan (0-1), Niall Corless, Jonathan Ward, David Whelan (1-0), Eoin Ryan (1-0), Brian McLaughlin, Subs.

Luke Cummins, Adam Askins This was the last competitive match for this particular bunch of players Under the stewardship of Gerry Banks, Jack Ward and Pat Brady. Since 1994 seven players have been constantly with the team namely Anthony Banks,

David Finneran, Conan O’Broin, Chris O’Sullivan, Ian Ward, Eoin Moran and Andrew Brady. Others have

moved away from the area, others played different sports, others just gave up and others have been keeping the off licences in the village busy. Highlights down the years have been the winning of the South-East Div 1 title in 1995, reaching the Dublin Feile div 2 final in 1999, the U-15 county Div 2 title in 2000 and our narrow defeat by Kilmacud in the semi-final of the U-16 championship in 2001. Both Ian Ward and Chris O’Sullivan are holders of juvenile championship medals in 1999, while Ian and Eoin Moran have achieved full representative with the Dublin minor teams this year. Report By

Car Boot Sale Sunday 6th July in their Car Park. If you want to enter, each car will cost E10. Everyone is welcome. All money raised is for Down Syndrome. JUNIOR HURLING LEAGUE 1/7/03 Round Tower 7-7 St Pats 2-9 On a warm dry Wednesday evening the Tower’s junior hurlers headed for Palmerstown to meet the might of St Pats on their home ground of Glenaulin. We expected a hard game from this formidable club. Because in the past we have had very competitive match when both these teams meet. Instead we got a training session. For the St Pats team were poor and gave our team very little opposition. Though they did have their moments as the 2-9 score line suggests. Our lads showed their skills in fact many of the younger players had a field day. Still weak teams are not what we need for they don’t give us the challenge we need to hone our skills. Hopefully our next opponents will give us more of a challenge for a few more matches like this and we will start to go stale and the promise and the future of hurling in Dublin will be in trouble. Congratulations to Paul Donohoe on His appointment to the post of Assistant Secretary on the Club Executive. Report By

ROUND TOWER’S AGM REPORT The AGM took place on th Wednesday 25 . What follows is a brief report on this AGM. It was well attended. Chairman Liam Mac Laughlin welcomed everyone to the AG M He made special mention of our late President Gerry Fallon. SECRETARY REPORT This report started with a brief summary of the year from the outgoing Secretary Bernie Cronin. He reported that; “It was a good year both on and off the field. We brought home two championships and a number of teams across all sections achieved promotion. There was many successful social and fund raising occasions locally and as far away as Gweedore”. Some highlights of a full and exciting year were:  The Minor hurlers winning the B championship last August and giving us a great run in the A championship.  Winning the Intermediate Camogie championship in October. The final took two days to complete because of bad weather but the quality of Camogie from our girls still shone out.  The setting up of a ladies football committee structure preseason and the improved organization has shown immediate results and augurs well for development of the game in the coming years.  While the 2002 season ultimately ended in disappointment for the senior footballers in failing to achieve promotion (having topped the league) they brought home the AIB Cup for the first time in our history.  After a career spanning the past ten years Jim Gavin retired from inter county football earlier this year.  We had three players, Maria Kavanagh, Emma Redmond and Catherine Roche on the Dublin panel which won the

Leinster ladies senior football championship last year.  The Dinner Dance in the Red Cow in May was again the highlight of the social calendar and was attended by AnTanaiste, Mary Harney and County Chairman, John Bailey.  The annual Club Mass is a very special occasion and will th be celebrated for the 25 occasion early next month  The Night at the Races in November was a marvellous occasion fund raiser of the year.  The Golf classic held in Craddockstown G.C. earlier this month was a great success  The five year sponsorship deal agreed with John and Marie Foley of Accelerated Drain Cleaning Ltd. This is a major deal and we are grateful to John and Marie for their generosity and goodwill.  Mary Dardis was a most deserving Hall of Fame winner after giving so much dedication and service over so many years. On a sad note our beloved and most esteemed President, Gerry Fallon, passed away shortly after Christmas, after a long illness which he had fought courageously throughout. The report went on to thank all those who have served the Club in Administration of all the Sub-committees. With out whom the Club would cease to function.

PRIMARY SCHOOL BLITZES

Competitions were held last Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. The competitions were organised by Liam MacLaughlin with help from Padge Kehoe (transport for outlying schools), Jim Quinn, Dave McCabe, Pat Lawless, Philip and Gemma Carr and also Martina Callanan, Peter Caffrey. A number of under 15 players also assisted. We are grateful to all the schools and teachers who supported the competitions, particularly the staff and teachers of Sruleen who uniquely participated in all competitions.

BOYS FOOTBALL Two sections were run with Clonburris, Sru- leen, and Quarry5

vale taking part in Section A. The Frank Roebuck and Sean Mac Namara led Clonburris emerged deserving winners from a very game Quarryvale team managed by John Nagle (ex St Annes' player). The B Section had Gaelscoil Chluain Dolcain, Gaelscoil Na Camogie and St Ronan's Deansrath (competing for the first time). Gaelscoil Chluain Dolcain emerged as winners of the Section just pipping Gaelscoil Na Camoige. In conjunction with the Senior Competition, fun blitzes were held for junior classes with Sruleen, Nano Nagle and Gaelscoil na Camoige sending over 70 children to participate. In all approximately 210 children participated on the Friday football day.

HURLIN2: Entries were received from St Josephs and Sruleen with St Josephs turning the tables from last year to emerge victorious.

GIRLS FOOTBALL Teams from Sruleen and Quarryvale participated. A keenly contested game with high standard of football saw Quarryvale deservedly capture their first title.

Toddlers need your help!! Towers toddlers, boys and girls aged 5 and upwards who are being coached in hurling skills urgently require a generous benefactor to sponsor gear and equipment. These youngsters are learning the basic skills of Gaelic games in a friendly and pressure free environment under the expert guidance of Catherine Moran and her expert team. Sliothars, Camans, helmets and sportswear are expensive even at this level, so if anyone out there in the corporate or business world would like to sponsor a very worthy cause please contact... Catherine Moran @ 086 8303207

JUVENILE FOOTBALL

Last year the leagues were in a state of transition as the long awaited report on the restructuring of juvenile games in the county was prepared. The report has only recently been published and this resulted in short leagues being played from September, a non-competitive league during this summer and the expectation is that the new structures will be in place for 2004. Our juvenile teams play in the South Dublin leagues. THE SKILLS SCHOOL commenced in September. Attendances varied from 30 up to 90 children over the period. Separate sessions were held for children aged 6 to 7 and for ages 8 upwards. The nursery will continue until July with emphasis being placed on 7 to 8 year olds in preparation for fielding the 2004 Under 9 team. Great credit to Shauna Curran who organised the Centre, registration and finances and Geraldine Corbett, a teacher in Nano Nagle, Bawnogue who helped with the coaching and fronted the Skills School when required. Also to Barry Kehoe, Barry Finn, Jamie Mc McCarthy, Finbar Donegan, Pauric McKeever, Jason Mockler and Vinnie Lee A team of coaches from the Under 15 Hurling and Football teams who helped each weekend. and have shown great leadership skills. Teams were fielded at all grades from under 9 through to under 16 with the exception of under 12. The UNDER 10 had a very successful season winning Div 3 league before Christmas and followed that with success in a shield final win in Parnell Park recently. The UNDER 11 team had another successful and medal winning year. and they are looking forward to competing in Div 1 The UNDER 13 team had a great season and are improving and look set for honors in the summer league. They are a side to watch in next years Feile. The UNDER 14 had a difficult start to the season but came right and they climbed to third place in the league. The Feile was the highlight of their league winning the group stage. The UNDER 15 have experienced problems in recent years in fielding teams and have lost a number of players to soccer, injuries and other commitments, the end of the season

saw a return of several players and the mentors hope to have a full panel when matches resume in September.

ADULT FOOTBALL The main news at adult football level was the failure of the seniors to gain promotion despite winning div 2 by five points. The under 16 are having a good season so far in div 2. They were presented with the under 15 div 3 title in December after a late finish to the previous league. They have invited eight teams to take part in the Delaney Cup which will be played in July. They visited Round Tower’s of Clapham last year and hope to do the same this year.

MINOR ; Competing in division 1South gave a good account of themselves finishing third in the table. They beat Na Fianna in the first round of the Championship but were beaten by Lucan in the Quarter Finals, with injuries to 2 key players not helping their cause. Ian Ward represents Towers at Minor County level.

UNDER 21 This team was mainly comprised of last year’s successful minor team. They did not play in the league due to Senior Football commitments but did play in the championship reaching the Semi finals in great style only to be beaten by Kilmacud in a very tight match.

JUNIOR B SEASON 2002 They moved up two divisions to Div 10, but showed that this was not an error in judgment as they performed admirably. Injuries to several key players didn’t help their cause. John Whelan, Paul Blake and John Walsh finally called it a day. John Coleman returned to the fold on his return from Australia. SEASON 2003 Aidan Dardis has taken a back seat role this year though he is still as supportive and enthusiastic as ever. The season has been a mixed one so far, suffering a few league defeats at the start but the form has returned and they are looking forward to the championship.

JUNIOR A SEASON 2002 They had a good league campaign finishing in third spot. They played ten games in the Conlon Cup competition 6beating the

eventual winners Ballyboden Wanderers the only defeat Ballyboden suffered. They were beaten by the Garda in a disappointing match in the championship but maintained their Junior A status at the first time of asking. 2003 has seen a change of management and an infusion of players from last years Minors. It’s a young squad Noel Dunne is a veteran at 27. They have equip themselves well in this tough div winning 11 matches and are looking forward to meeting Thomas Davis in the championship soon.

MCCABE CUP The McCabe Cup was played off as a one-day tournament. In which Towers saw off the opposition of St Finnian’s and Croi Ro Naofa to retain the cup.

SENIOR FOOTBALL SEASON 2002 2002 had a cruel twist in the tail for the senior footballers. They dominated division 2 to finish top of the pile by 5 points . However instead of automatic promotion to div1 they were only entitled to a top 4 semi-final place against fourth place Ballinteer. This semi final was disappointing as without doing our selves justice they went down 0-8 to 0-7. They went out of the championship in the first round to Naomh Mearnog, despite a great first half. But all was not black for this team for they captured the AIB cup for the first time in club history. Another positive point they won 16 straight matches in the league and cup.

SEASON 2003 There form this year has been patchy. But they put together a sequence of wins including Parnells who were widely tipped as contenders. The top 4 format which worked against us last year may prove our savior this year. In the championship first round they saw off Clontarf by 3 points.

JUVENILE HURLING It was another well organised and vibrant year for under age hurling from nursery to the minor team. The hurling Skills school was run in the Community Centre over the winter months with very encour-

aging numbers of 40 to 50 children attending the two hour sessions. The training then moved outdoors in April to Moyle Park. The nursery is managed by Catherine Moran with excellent help from Colm Farrell, Mick 0 Brien, Donall Young and James Clarke.

JUVENILE HURLING MARATHON The Juvenile Hurling section ran a sponsored 12 hour hurling marathon in Moyle Park sports hall on Saturday 28th December. The whole day was a huge success with seven different teams taking part throughout the day - approximately 110 players participated. The day was also a major financial success raising £3000 in the process and great credit is due to the organisers.

TOWER'S HOST DUBLIN FEILE SKILLS COMPETITION Tower's had the honour of hosting this years Dublin finals of the Feile Na nGael Skills competition in Moyle Park on Sunday 25th of May. A total of 19 clubs attended and 51 competitors eventually took part. The day was very well organised by Denis & Martina Callanan who got great support from all hurling mentors. And again the under 15 players gave valuable assistance The UNDER 9's team have trained in the Community Centre during the winter and have trained outdoor in Moyle Park since April. A lot of work has been done to introduce new young talent from our local schools and the number of young hurlers has increased. The under 9's have participated in a summer league with a number of other Dublin clubs and have won a lot of their games. They UNDER 9/10 train every Tuesday night in Moyle Park. There are no competitive leagues for this age group in hurling. But they have competed in a number of blitz competitions organised by the board and clubs and have acquitted themselves well. The UNDER 11 season started with a grading match which placed them in division 3. Division 3 consisted of a 10 round league. The first match was at home to St. Finian's who failed to show. This was very disappointing but once they played the next match they were soon into their stride. They played eight games and won seven. As it stands at the mo-

ment they have a great chance of winning the league but it may come down to a play-off. This is another team where many parents are involved. The UNDER 13 as is common with this age group have lost some players. However, they have also unearthed some exciting new talent. Their aim is to gain division 1 hurling at under 15 level. They reached the semi-final of the Feile. They are currently lying mid-table in division 2. While we have no UNDER 14 team a Feile panel was made up of seven under 14's (who play with the under 15s) and thirteen of our under 13 team. They competed in division 4 beating St. Brigid's then losing to Naomh Barróg before going out at the group semi-final stage to Naomh Mearnog. The UNDER 15 finished their under 15 campaign in November when they played Lucan Sarsfields in the Championship Shield final. Unfortunately, they were beaten on that occasion. They had better fortune in the league finishing in joint top position with Lucan and being promoted to division 1 under 16. They got sweet revenge over Lucan in the league play-off recently which took place in Lucan on the occasion of the opening of their new clubhouse. In the 2003 season They are operating in division 2 (having finished third in division 3 at under 14) and are coping well in the higher surroundings. After six games they occupy second position. Seamus Reynolds and Barry Kehoe have made the under 15 development squad and other players are confident of making it too.

UNDER 16 SEASON 2002 They had a very successful season going through the league unbeaten. They also reached the Shield final against Kilmacud Crokes. This was a great achievement by a team made up of under 15 and 16 players. Brian MacLaughlin and Eoin Walsh made the under 16 development squad. SEASON 2003 Operating now in division 1 of the league a number of results have gone against them albeit by small margins. They have pushed the likes of Ballyboden and St Brigid's to small margins and proved that they deserve to be operating at the top level. The team has benefited from the great work of newly appointed coach Fergal McDonagh 7

MINOR 1983 was the last time we fielded a Minor hurling team. So Sunday August 18th 2002 was a historic day for the club. This team then went on to make more history by bringing home the first minor hurling championship and also winning the league. They were promoted to Division 1 in 2003 where they continued to give great account of themselves against the major powers of Dublin hurling. They had a great run in the Championship, But were beaten by St Judes in the semi finals. Eoin Moran has been selected for the Dublin Minor panel and Douglas Faughnan and Eoin Ryan are on the Dublin under 17 development squad.

UNDER 21 This is a new team which has been formed this year to encourage our young members to continue to play.

ADULT HURLING At adult level, the Intermediate team are holding their own in intermediate division 2 and have had good results in the round robin championship. The Junior's had an excellent season last year winning division 9 and the Fletcher Shield..

JUNIOR They had a very successful 2002 winning Division 9 of the league, losing only two games. They also won the Fletcher Shield where they only lost one game. They also got to the Championship semi final before being beaten by St Kevins

INTERMEDIATE SEASON 2002 They hurled in the intermediate league division 2. After a shaky start to the league they recovered well and finished mid-table. They had the reverse experience in the Doyle Cup where after starting well and topping the table they faded and ultimately finished in fourth place. In the championship after an excellent win over O'Toole's they were beaten by St. Mark's. In the 2003 season they have been bolstered by the arrival of a number of players from the minor squad. This was apparent in the championship match against Faughs when an Eoin Moran injury time goal snatched victory from the jaws of de-

feat. In the round robin series of championship

JOHNNY CONNORS TOURNAMENT This tournament has failed to take place for a number of years now due to the difficulty in arranging a suitable date with Upperchurch/ Drumbane. While the Saturday was wet and breezy it didn't deter the young hurlers of Round Tower taking to the field in great numbers in the annual blitz that is played as a curtain opener to the Tommy Curran Cup. Four teams took part in the Cup with more than 60 players participating. Wild Geese and Ninth Lough advanced to the final beating Town Centre and Sruleen respectively. Ninth Lough finally took the title for the first time ever after a close encounter.

OIREACHTAS 2002: There was a large exodus from both the hurling and Camoige communities on the first weekend in November for the annual Oireachtais tournament. A total of nearly 100 players and supporters travelled to Gweedore in Donegal to witness

Tower's regain the trophy beating Castlewellian on a very windy and wet day in Gweedore. The weekend was a resounding success both sporting and socially due in no small part to the organisation skills of Karen Mullen and Patricia 0' Toole.

MINOR They had a great year in 2002 going through division 2 unbeaten. As many of the team are still under 16 the future looks bright. The girls have reached the Shield final for 2003 which is due to be played on June 30th. Emily Hamill, Emma Redmond, and Caitnona Mc Grath were part of the Dublin Minor team this year.

SENIOR LADIES FOOTBALL The Ladies Football section held a General Meeting on Tuesday 10th December in the member's room in order to consolidate the progress made in recent years and to put structures in place to ensure orderly progress into the future. A committee was elected and it committed to meet regularly in order to manage the section properly. In the past year they have had a large representation on county teams which has won considerable silverware. Andrea Bowe recently picked up her fifth Leinster medal (between school and county) when she collected a Leinster under 16 medal. Karina Connolly and Sinead Tucker also received under 16 medals. Congratulations to Catherine Roche, Emma Redmond and Maria Kavanagh who collected Leinster senior medals last year. The UNDER 14 with the majority of girls still at a young age are doing very well in division 2. The girls are also competing in the Championship shield this year. Rebecca Graham is the only county representative from the club on the Dublin Under14 panel and she has already won a Leinster medal this year. Hopefully, she'll follow in the footsteps of her late grandfather, John Timmons, and bring back an All-Ireland winners medal. The UNDER 16 young team had a great year again earning promotion from division 3 to division 2. The hard work put "in by mentors and players is paying dividends given time. They are holding their own in division 2 this year winning more matches than they've lost. The girls reached the Shield final in 2002 but were unfortunately beaten. Still the future looks hopeful with Dublin under 16 players Carina Connolly, Sinead Tucker and Andrea Bowe in the side who have already won a Leinster medal this year.

8

The Senior team had a great year in 2002 earning promotion to Division 1 for 2003, coming in second place in Division 2 under the guidance of Marie Crotty. Naomh Mearn6g ended the dream for Towers in the championship in a heart racing semi final, with Towers losing out by two points. Towers now remain in division 1 for next year. Championship hopes were squashed early on in the season but the team was narrowly beaten.
