CLUB NEWS The peculiar May weather saw several matches called off on the weekend. The Intermediate Hurling Championship match against O’Toole’s was the biggest game to fall, but a Junior hurling fixture and the hurling Feile also fell by the wayside after Towers had won their first game against Ballinteer St Johns on Friday evening . The under 16 hurlers won against Kilmacud Crokes in shield action and the Minors saw off Peregrines. The Senior Footballers Cup clash with Kilmacud didn’t go ahead either. The Junior A team beat Ballyboughall on Sunday morning and the Junior B team returned to their winning ways with an impressive 2-20 to 0-4 win over Scoil Ui Chonaill. Thanks to all the local schools who entered teams in the primary league competition last week. Well done to Shruleen who won both the football and the Hurling competitions and to Scoil Talbot who won the ladies football. Thanks also to Jim Quinn, Dave McCabe, Padge Kehoe, Catherine Moran, Martina Callanan and all who helped over the 3 days.

Eugene Garrigan SENIOR LADIES FOOTBALL LEAGUE 15/05/2002 Round Tower 3-12 Man O War 0-9 Towers Senior Ladies secured another victory last Wednesday against Man O War in well-won match. Towers fought hard without the guidance of their dedicated manager Crotty who would have been very proud of the performance. Catherine Roche, full forward, started the scoring with a point and Suzanne Murray, centre half forward, added another just after. Man O War kept the pressure on and a few points filtered through the half and full back line. Towers kept their heads up and secured more points from Emily Hamill, Maria Kavanagh. Catherine Roche added a further 1-1 to put Towers in front at half time. The story was much the same in the second half with continuous pressure from Man O War but fortunately for Towers the wasted a lot of possession. A tactile change in the forwards of switching Suzanne Murray and Eimear Mc Grath as well as the introduction of Emma Redmond worked well and Towers used their possession well. Towers increased the scoreline with 1-1 from Emily Hamill and points from Eimear Mc Grath, Emma Redmond and Maria Kavanagh. Catherine Roche was magnificent in the second half and totaled 2-3 from play. The back line were on top in 3

the second half with fine performances from Susan Kavanagh, Pamela Dunne and Louise O’ Neill. The team would like to thank Anne Darbey for her help and support on the night and would also like to wish Orla Mc Gaughey a quick recovery from her injury. Team; Lisa Gregg, Louise O’ Neill,

JUNIOR A FOOTBALL CONLON CUP 19/05/2002 Round Tower 2-10 Ballybiughal 0-7 Round Towers Junior 'A's finished up fairly easy winners against Ballyboughal in this Conlon Cup fixture played in Monastery Road on Sunday, 19 May 2002. After two (2) pointed frees from Ger. Minahan, the crucial score of the first half came from Stephen McGibney, when he blasted a shot to the net following a neat interchange with Adam Fogarty. Ger. Hickey then notched a point, before Ballyboughall fought back with three points in quick succession. Towers responded with two (2) further pointed frees from Stephen McGibney. Just before half-time, Barry Gallagher was sent off for two yellow cards, which resulted in Towers facing the wind in the second half with just 14 players. Half-time score: Towers 1 - 5; Ballyboughall 0 - 3. Towers resumed in the second half in determined mood. With Ger. Minahan, Darren O'Meara at midfield, and the halfback line of Ben Price, Paul Lanigan and John Kenny covering acres of ground, Ballyboughall could not make any inroads into the Towers lead. Ger. Minahan tagged on three more points and Stephen McGibney added two (2) of his own. Three minutes from the end, the coup-de-grace was delivered when Ciaran Dunne, receiving a pass from McGibney, smashed an unstoppable shot off the post and into the Ballyboughall net. A good win, which should put the team in good spirits for forthcoming League fixtures against St Olaf's (Thurs) and Wanderers (Sun).

Charlie’s Angels Sing Sweetly On Monday May 20th Towers Minor girls took a giant step closer to the league title with a huge win over an unbeaten Fingallians team. With two matches remaining to play Round Towers are top of the table as the only unbeaten team. From the throw in Fingallians split Towers defence wide open to score a point. Any worries we had soon ceased as we were treated to The Emma Redmond Show for the rest of the first half. Towers playing with the breeze pushed forward and launched everything into the full forward line to Emma Redmond who scored 5 goals and a point for the half-hour. Emily Hamill was also in top

form knocking over 5 points before the break. At half time Towers were comfortably in front 5-9 to 0-4. Charlie warned the girls at the break that their job was not yet finished and it was a little worrying when Fingallians scored 2-1 within the first five minutes of the second half. Towers dug deep and replied with a goal and a point from yours truly Emma Redmond. Towers controlled the rest of the game with further goals from Sinéad Tucker and Aisling Lawless. Towers half-back line of Ciara Lanigan, Caitríona Mc Grath and Andrea Bowe were in complete control and pushed forward inter playing with Grace Lanigan and Aisleen Milton in midfield. Lisa Gregg was her usual calm and collected self in goals. Pamela (captain fantastic) Dunne marshaled the full back line with Laura Daly, Caitríona O’ Neill and Amy Geragthy. One of the highlights of the game was the three brilliant long range points from Grace Lanigan. Others to shine were Lisa Carey and Sinéad Tucker on the wings. Team: Lisa Gregg, Caitriona

O’Neill, Pamela Dunne, Amy Geragthy, Laura Daly, Caitríona Mc Grath, Ciara Lanigan, Aisleen Milton (0-1), Grace Lanigan (0-3), Lisa Carey, Emily Hamill (0-5), Sinéad Tucker (1-0), Andrea Bowe (0-1), Emma Redmond (8-3), Natasha Daly. MINOR HURLING LEAGUE 19/05/2002 Round Tower 3-6 St Perigrines 0-7 MINORS DEFEAT ST. PEREGRINES IN THE LEAGUE. On Sunday morning the Round Towers minor hurling team played St Peregrines in the minor league in the Community Centre. Once again there was great crowd of supporters at the game. The weather was fine for the first half but the rain came down for the second half making conditions slightly more difficult. This game was very close and Peregrines have some very impressive young hurlers on their team. Towers had the wind for the first half and the scoring was scarce enough. Peregrines gave away a few frees which we 4

failed to capitalize on but Owen Moran scored two points from play and Sean McDonald also scored a great point from about thirty yards out. David Chapman was introduced into the game after fifteen minutes replacing Shane Fitzpatrick who was injured. Simon Nevin scored a great goal before the end of the half from out in the left wing with a great strike. Both teams were very evenly matched and it was impossible to predict an outcome at half time. The second half showed Towers dominate the game a bit more and a great goal from Owen Walsh giving towers the lift they required. Peregrines put up a good effort but the Tower’s forwards got a few great breaks from attacks from Liam Connolly and Owen Moran passing the ball into Brian McLoughlin who broke the net from twenty yards giving the keeper no chance. David Finneran scored a point from his wing back position from play, which has been a recent trait from David lately. Other scores from Douglas Faughnan and Ciaran Cross gave a great win to Towers with a final score of Towers 3-6 to St Peregrines 0-7. Finally I would like to thank Betty Ward and Breda Finneran for making the team sandwiches after the game. Well done to all the players and management for a great win. Team: J Clarke, P Nynan, N Corless, O Ryan, D Finneran (0-1), I

Ward, D McNamee, S Fitzpatrick, D Faughnan (0-1), S McDonald (0-1), C Cross (0-1), L Connolly (0-1), O Walsh (1-0), O Moran (0-2), S Nevin (1-0). Subs: D Chapman for S Fitzpatrick, C Brady for D Chapman, B MacLaughlin (1-0) for S Nevin, D O Reilly for S McDonald. A Farrelly. Report By

UNDER 16 LADIES FOOTBALL LEAGUE 15/05/2002 Fingal Ravens lost home advantage for this fixture due to changing from Sunday to Wednesday. Towers were not going to make the Same mistake as they did with Cabinteely, slacking off while ahead. They battled on to the final minute, resulting in a fine win. This weekend we are home to Kilmacud Crokes on Sunday at 4pm, all support welcome. Sorry girls I mislaid my notes in this game.

UNDER 14 HURLING FEILE 2002 17/5/02 Round Tower 2-10 Ballinteer 3-4 On Friday 17/5/02 the under 14 Hurlers traveled to Marley Park to play the first match in our group of the Feile. The weather was absolutely appalling but all the players and mentors wanted to play instead of facing three games on Saturday morning. The referee, Dermot Murray, was not keen to play in heavy rain but the pitch was holding up well and so we started and said we would leave it to Dermot after that. The two teams sounded each other out for the first twenty minutes with the half time score tight at 1-3 to 0-3 to Towers. In the second half the rain eased and the pace of the game increased as both teams looked to get that vital edge by winning game 1 of the group. Towers notched up two points from frees when Ballinteer rocked us with two quick goals to put them one point up. The lads responded well with two points to put us in front when we suddenly opened them up and cracked home the all-important goal. We continued to tack on the points to go 6 clear when Ballinteer crashed in another goal to close the game up again. Both teams swooped points before the whistle blew to leave the final score 2-10 to 3-4. We were delighted to win but arrived home to Clondalkin to discover the Feile had been rained off for the remainder of the weekend. The competition has been refixed for Saturday 25/2/02 with Towers hosting and the games will be at 11 and 12 in the community centre. The board assures us the Friday result will stand for next week and we would like as much support as possible. Thanks to all the people who braved the weather to support us Report by Denis Callanan UNDER 14 LADIES FOOTBALL LEAGUE 17/05/2002 Round Tower 4-3 St Judes 2-9 Fierce winds and rain for this game against St Judes on Friday in Moyle Park. The visitors travelled with 13 players and we accommodated same. Judes started off the stronger and put their first couple of shouts wide, then recorded 2 points and a goal from a peno. In the second half Towers playing with the wind got 95% of the possession and made it count with good scores from Ciara Ormond 2-0, Andrea Bowe 2-1, 5

Leanne Farrell 0-1 and another point was scored which no one claimed. Report By Padge Kehoe UNDER 10 FOOTBALL SUMMER LEAGUE 19/05/2002 Round Tower 3-8 Lucan Sarsfields 5-5 After a wet and windy start to the day, the rain dried up, the sun came out, and the boys looked forward building on their well deserved success of last week. Round Tower captain on the day, and full back, Karl Kelly, won the toss and elected to play with what breeze there was. Little did we know that this was to be the only 50:50 decision we would win all day – but more of that later. The new mid field pairing of Eoghan Moore and Connor L’Estrange started well, with Eoghan bagging the first point of the day, with Lucan quickly replying with one at the other end. Fintan Maguire, Tom Curran and Eoghan Moore would find the range with points from play before Lucan got another goal and a point back. By this time however, it became clear to all that we would get nothing from the stand-in referee, as we were blown up for everything and awarded next-to-nothing in return. Meanwhile, Eoin Carey scored a clever point for Towers before the referee struck again with a fairly dubious penalty decision in favour of Lucan for an alleged “handling on the ground” offence. Although the ball was well struck, goalkeeping hero of last week, Patrick Stynes, was equal to this one too, and pulled off another fine save. Towers went in at the interval trailing by the narrowest of margins (05 to 1-3) when the whistle blew for “half time” after exactly 19 minutes, instead of the usual 30-minute period of play. After the turn around, and following a fine outfield movement, Fintan Maguire threw down the gauntlet with a fine goal strike to put Towers back in front. What happened in the next five (or so) minutes beggared belief! Following some admittedly suspect marking by Towers, Lucan would hit four goals without reply. Two of these found the net from quite blatant “square balls”, but again the home side was awarded more shamefully biased decisions by the stand-in referee when the scores were allowed to stand. More worryingly, when queried, the referee would declare that “the square-ball rule did not apply up to the age of 12” and besides, “the referee has

the discretion as to whether or not the rule should be applied”. He went on to state that in these cases he had chosen not to apply a rule, which (confusingly) according to himself earlier, did not exist! To the credit of the boys, in the face of persistent fouling of the ball, and unpunished two-handed tackles, they stuck to the job at hand. Dogged work now by Niall Lannigan, Andrew Collin, Jack Whelan and Karl Kelly in the halfand full-back lines would restrict Lucan to two more points for the remainder of the second half – a half that would last this time for 25 minutes! Up front, Fintan Maguire would go on to earn another 2-01 which the Clondalkin side richly deserved. Eoghan Moore notched up another 1-02, including a truly awesome point from just inside the "21" with a hook kick over the shoulder - equal to any that the Jayo's, Ollie's or Mike-Frank's on the InterCounty stage would be proud to claim! So let today’s lesson be: “In spite of everything, never give up, and if decisions do go the other way (which they will from time to time), don’t let your heads drop, keep your mind focused on the game – and let your very considerable football skills do the talking for you! There will always be another day.” Well-done boys – you never gave in, and you did yourselves proud. Squad on the day:
