Jigs & Reels 2014: Friday 31st January, Red Cow Hotel

In living rooms across Clondalkin and further afield, toes are tapping and legs are lifting as the training is now well underway for Round Tower GAA Club’s Jigs & Reels 2014. An excellent group of wanna-be Michael Flatley’s and Jean Butler’s have been brought together for this important club fundraiser. The dancers will take to the stage at the Red Cow Moran Hotel on Friday 31st January in the company of dancers from the Elaine Kavanagh School of Irish Dancing. Jigs & Reels 2014 title and cast a scrutinizing eye over the competitors. It promises to be an evening of fun and fantastic entertainment, with plenty of laughs and excellent talent on show. open forum on Wednesday January 16th in the clubrooms. This was undertaken as a full strategic review of structures within the club which would map out the future direction of the club. On Saturday January 19th our Under11 Hurlers took on Clanna Gael/Fontenoy, our Under12 Footballers took on St. Bridget's in challenge matches. The First Anniversary Mass for Ciaran Carr took Place on Saturday January 26th. Also on Saturday 26th our Under9 Hurlers had a challenge blitz against Lucan Sarsfields and Westmanstown Gaels at 12th Lock. Our Under11 Footballers played NAAS in Monastery Road. There was another blitz on the 26th this time it was the Under12 Hurlers against St. Marks, Faughs in Moyle Park, followed by the Under13 Football challenge against St. Marys of Saggart in Monastery road. The Under15 Footballers got there season of with a Challenge against Fingallians (S) in Holywell Park. And our Under16 Footballers traveled to Raheen (Kildare) for a competitive challenge. On Sunday 27th our Under14 Footballers traveled to Moorfield (Newbridge).

JANUARY: Saw Paddy Delaney celebrating his 72nd Birthday, also celebrating their birthdays were Alan Milton, Ian Ward, Martin Ryan and Sharon Jordan. The under12 hurlers finished off their third Sunday in a row with three wins from three against Leixlip, Naas and Setanta in challenges. Leon Murphy captained Towers man of the match was Oisin Douglas played with great heart. Nicole Johnston won her place on the Dublin Under14 ladies football panel. The Senior season league began on February 24th. ADMISSION CHARGE SENIOR GAMES ON MONASTERY ROAD. Hanna Tyrell leads Jackies to Laois victory. The senior footballers defeated Skerries Harps 0-11 to 0-8 and the Intermediates defeated Kilmacud Crokes in the league. Our Under 12 hurlers enjoyed a great start to the league today, February 23rd, with a good strong win against a very tough Faughs team in Corkagh Park. Snow didn't put the Towers lads off with 18 players togging out, representing great numbers heading into the year. Final score was Towers 2-5 Faughs 13. MARCH: Began with the Under8 Hurlers finishing in third place (Bronze Medalists) after 6 weeks of the annual in-door Hurling Tournament in Gormanston in their two groups of eight teams. John Weafer (Jnr) celebrated His 30th Birthday on Friday March 1st. Gerry (Farmer) Murphy, Angela McNamara, Cathrina McGrath and Andrea Bowe also celebrated their Birthdays. Gaelic 4 Fathers played Lucan Sarsfields in Monastery Road. Mark Hampson celebrated his Birthday. Amy Conroy and Sinead Collins represented Round Towers in the Dublin Under16 ladies squad. Thomas McCabe and Darren Gilligan who successfully completed their Level 1 referee course and passed their final exams. Thomas and Darren are now eligible to referee Under8- Under10 home games. Dean Alford spoke on youth volunteering and club administration at National Youth Congress in Croke Park and then also addressed the GAA Annual Congress in Derry later in the month. Members of Round Towers GAA represented Gaelscoil Chluain Dolcain (Colaiste Chilliain) on the 2nd of March at half time at the Dublin V Mayo game in Croke Park. The Senior footballers lost to Templeogue SS, the Intermediates defeated Kilmacud Crokes and the Juniors lost to Ballyboden, all in cup fixtures. The Minor footballers beat St. Marks in the league (Round Tower 4-8 v St. Marks 1-10). The senior hurlers defeated

Peggy Boggans who was one of if not the oldest member of our club passed away on the 6th. Paddy Lynch celebrated his 82nd Birthday. Annette (Sligo) & Paul O ’Neill celebrated their 5th Anniversary. Under13 Camogie defeated Final score: Naomh Pádraig 5-0 Round Towers 2-1. Brian Douglas & Gavin Lawler celebrated their birthdays. Night at the Dogs took place on March 15th it was a great success. Our teams, played against St. Brigids (2 teams), Ballyboden and St Patrick’s Palmerstown. Over a total of 6 matches, we won 3, drew 1 and lost 2(both very narrowly). A new electronic security barrier has been installed in Monastery Road to counter a recent spate of burglaries. Nicole Johnson and her Dublin Under14 teammates were narrowly beaten by Westmeath in Clane in the Leinster B Final. The Senior footballers defeated Fingal Ravens in semifinal of AIB cup. Under12 Hurlers capture a comprehensive victory over Round Towers Lusk (Round Towers (C) 4-11 V Round Towers (L) 0- 0.) Sarah Heffernan won the Match 3 + Bonus Ball Winner. The Minor Football team was in Croke Park helping to test out the new “HAWLK EYE” system. As part of the occasion they had a full match on the pitch.

Mairead and Owen McMahon and Alan and Méabh Milton celebrate their Wedding Anniversaries. Ann Darbey, David Chapman, David Finneran, Catherine Roche and Sinead McNulty celebrated their birthdays. Well done to all the club ladies who ran in the Woman’s Mini Marathon on the weekend. They raised a lot of money for their charities. The sterling efforts of our Under 11s were unfortunate not to claim the points in the league clash against Ballinteer St John's Round Tower 1-3 Ballinteer St John 2-8. On 13th June 1993 Round Tower under 14 footballers beat Simonstown Gaels in Austin Stacks Park, Tralee, Co Kerry, to claim the division 1 Féile title and be crowned all Ireland Champions. 20 years on, the team reassembled for a reunion and to play together once again in a challenge match against the club's Gaelic 4 father’s side. Team mentors Bernard Sheeran, PJ Minihan & Noel McGlynn stood on the lines once again. The match took place on 14th June in Monastery Road. The 1993 stars ran out 1-11 v 1-10 winners. Pat Lawless (June 14th) and Caroline Fallon (June 16th) celebrated their birthdays. The Senior hurlers lost to Ballyboden and the junior hurlers defeated Commercials in championship. Once again the time of year for the annual Dublin Camaint took place over the month of July with the final taking place in Parnell Park mid-August. Well done to the Gaelic for Fathers team for their great performance against the Cloverhill Prison Officers in the second of their challenge games. After a heavy defeat in the first game, the Towers lads really dug deep and played their hearts out against a very polished outfit. The final score was 413 to 3-14 in favour of Cloverhill and Tower's victory was denied by some brilliant point blank saves by Paul Carroll (our player!) and a brilliant goal scored for them by Duncan Higgins (Roscommon's finest footballer since Dermot Earley!) Top scorers for Towers that night were Gavin Lawler and John O'Malley, but a special mention to some of the Towers newbies, Jimmy Coleman and Dave Mahon who had great games in the de11

The Westies (Under12 hurlers) invaded the Midlands on Saturday August 17th and ran rampant leaving a trail of destruction in their wake, of broken hurls, bloodied limbs and tear stained faces. Tower's G4d had a very eventful weekend as they took part in the Truagh GAA club recreational football blitz in Co Monaghan at the weekend. In the group stages Towers won 2 out of their 4 matches and were then beaten in the Shield Final. Congratulations to our Junior Hurlers who overcame a seven point half-time deficit to overcome Setanta 2-11 v 1-11 in their Junior E Dublin Championship semi-final clash. They were beaten by Parnell’s 1-12 to 2-14. Our under 16 footballers defeated Ballyboden in the Division 5 league semi-final on November 2nd. Round Tower’s Intermediate Hurlers looked on the brink of relegation after losing what was effectively a relegation play-off to St Vincent’s on November 3rd. All good runs come to an end at some time and the under 12 hurlers 18 matches unbeaten was ended by Sylvesters 3g 8p Round Tower 2g 6p. But to show that no sooner had they been knocked of their perch, the lads showed how quickly they can recover and jumped back on again beating St. Kevin’s in the opening match in St Kevins Tournament. The Under 13B team held a Table Quiz. The under16 footballers captured the league title on Saturday, 9th November, in front of a large and enthusiastic crowd. All proceeds went towards the Senior Footballers team preparation fund for 2014 and also to the Ciaran Carr foundation.

“CIARANS LEGACY LIVES ON” His legacy will span the Clondalkin generations. The village made history, as it became the first community in Ireland to have a defibrillator in every school in the locality. Twenty defibrillators were presented to the schools in the Laurels. The initiative was launched by Dublin manager Jim Gavin. The project was the result of fund-raising efforts of the Laurel's Charity Crew and the Ciarán Carr Foundation. The All-Ireland Football and Leinster Hurling Champions took to the playing pitch of Round Tower GAA Club on New Year’s Eve. We were very proud to announce that the club would be hosting this year’s Dublin Bus/The Herald Dubs Stars 2013 fixtures at our new state-of-the-art playing facilities at Monastery Road. Jim Gavin brought his All– Ireland winning Footballers back to his hometown of Clondalkin for this very special occasion and Anthony Daly travelled with the Leinster Hurling Champions and AllIreland semi-finalists. Well done to Alex Darbey, Gary Quinlivan & Eoin Moran from the club who were selected on the Dublin Blue Stars panel for this year’s Match. A great night Hurling and Football was had on the night.

RT’s Strategic Plan 2013 – 2018 has now been launched. It is a very positive, exciting and ambitious plan that seeks to maximize the potential of the club to develop and grow over the next five years. Many thanks to all who participated in bringing it together, particularly those who attended the initial planning workshop in January and those who participated in the various focus groups.
