MINORS DENIED BY LAST MINUTE GOAL AS MONASTERY ROAD LIGHTS UP Round Tower 4-7 v Trinity Gaels 3-11, Monastery Road, 28th November

ROUND TOWER GAA CLUB SHOP IS OPEN EVERY MONDAY NIGHT FROM 7.30-8.30PM. PLEASE CALL BETTY WARD OR CATHERINE MORAN IF YOU HAVE ANY ENQUIRIES ON 087 675 2238 OR 086 830 3207 RESPECTIVELY.

(Tommy Keogh pictures of the action can be viewed on the web page) Monastery Road was lit up on Thursday evening as our Minor Footballers and Trinity Gaels finished their season with a high scoring and very entertaining MFL3 clash, writes Mick McGlynn. Unfortunately a last minute goal denied our Minors a victory on the historic occasion as a talented Trinity Gaels side netted two late goals to overcome a defiant comeback by Towers. 4

It was the first occasion a Towers team had taken to Monastery Road to play competitively under the bright lights and our young lads wasted little time in bringing the occasion to life as they netted after two minutes. Micheál Walsh embarked on a pacey run from the half forward line and he drew defenders before hand-passing to Alan Gavin who slotted it calmly low beyond the advancing keeper. But the opposition responded and took control of the game. Their quick movement with the ball caused problems for the Towers defence. They kicked five points without reply and for a few Towers were guilty of giving away possession, resulting in them conceding. Our lads went 22 minutes without a score before Walsh showed excellent leadership to kick a score. Again he attacked from the half-forwards and he played a one-two with Davey McCarthy and ran at the home side with pace. He had three defenders surrounding him when he kicked the score from the 21. Gavin, Walsh and McCarthy worked passes quickly between them and it led to Adam Clarke being fouled. Joey Murphy’s free dropped on the box and a Towers flick saw it come back off the crossbar. Towers then levelled on 29 minutes when McCarthy played crossfield to midfielder Shane Boland who ran with pace onto the pass and kicked the equaliser. But we conceded just before half-time. An overhit pass when we were comfortable in possession was punished with an excellent score from distance to leave it 1-2 v 0-6 at the break. The first attack of the second-half brought another Gaels score and an excellent score from the right pushed us three points behind. Within three minutes the margin was six, when Gaels netted their first goal. Towers needed a response and again Walsh proved the talisman. He started the attack with a pass to centrehalf-back Fergus Callely and he released McCarthy on the right. He beat his defender and his dropping ball across the box to the back post was palmed to the net by Walsh. The visitors kicked another two points to stretch their lead to five and Aa-

ron Soady then came from half-back to kick a score under pressure. Shane Boland kicked a point with his left from the halfforwards in response to another Gaels score. With Towers now trailing by four with ten minutes remaining, the game was turned on its head within a three minute spell. A mix-up between the visitor’s keeper and full back saw the alert Walsh pick possession and coolly sidestep the last line of defence before rolling into the empty net. Walsh then notched a superb third goal when a he palmed from a tight angle a high ball over the keeper to leave Towers now two ahead, 4-4 v 1-11. Substitute Ciaran Brennan played a key role in the build-up when blocked Gaels from clearing. Walsh again played a key role in the next score when his run off the ball was found with an inside pass from Boland and McCarthy was set-up to kick an excellent score from the right from distance. Another score was quickly registered and then Alan Gavin kicked from long range to leave Towers 5 clear with four minutes remaining, 4-6 v 1-11. But this was a very talented Trinity Gaels side and they refused to be beaten. Their full forward struck for goal from just inside the 21 that finished to the roof of the net. With time almost up they needed a goal and from the resulting kick-out the visitors worked the ball inside with quick movement before it was slipped under keeper Eoghan Heffernan. There was time for no more and meant our lads lost by the finest of margins on another momentous night for Monastery Road and Round Tower GAA Club.

Round Tower: Eoghan Heffernan, Padraig Fitzpatrick, Thomas Ankers, Sean Flynn, Aaron Soady, Fergus Callely, Alex Whelan, Shane Boland, Michael Cleary Burns, Alan Gavin, Joey Murphy, Aaron Whelan, Davey McCarthy, Micheál Walsh, Adam Clarke. Used subs: Ciaran Brennan, Kevin Nolan. 5

Round Tower GAA Club Juvenile/Christmas Draw 2013

Round Tower GAA Club is bringing together its 2013 Juvenile and Christmas Draws in a concerted effort to support the development and promotion of Gaelic Games amongst children and teenagers within the club and wider Clondalkin community. We are kindly asking our Members, supporters, friends and the wider community to support this very important fundraiser if they are in a position to do so. Funding raised from it will play a lead role in supporting the club in the employment of a fulltime Games Promotion Officer - an exciting and ambitious objective in the club’s recently launched five year strategic plan. Round Tower GAA Club has taken the decision the sole focus of its annual Christmas fundraising draw will be on the promotion of Gaelic Games amongst young people within the club and wider community and the development of their playing skills.

The draw will take place Wednesday 18th December in Round Tower GAA Club. Catherine Moran, Round Tower GAA Club Juvenile Chair said; “This draw will be of crucial importance in enabling Round Tower GAA Club nurture and develop the immense enthusiasm for Gaelic Games within our club and local schools over the coming year. The success of the Dublin Footballers and our very own Jim Gavin has created great excitement for our national games and children and teenagers are eager to participate. The Games Promotion Officer will engage with Mentors within our club and our local schools to support them in the coaching of Gaelic Games. I encourage our Juvenile Mentors, parents of juvenile’s playing with our Club and people with an interest in supporting young people in Clondalkin to play GAA to support this very important fundraiser.”

The Draw This fundraiser incorporates our 2013 Juvenile and Christmas Draws. It is a unique and very different draw from others. A total 2,000 tickets are being sold and tickets are priced between 1cent and €20. Each ticket has a unique price and buyers are not aware of the cost of the ticket until they open the envelope it is contained within. All tickets – irrespective of pricing – have an equal chance of winning a share of the €4,000 prize fund. Ten fantastic cash prizes on offer are as follows: • 1st prize: €2,000 • 2nd prizes: 2 x €500 • 3rd prizes: 2 x €250 • 4th prizes: 5 x €100 7

The Laurels Charity Crew and the Ciarán Carr Foundation would like to take the opportunity to thank everyone who took part!

The whole side gave outstanding performances, including Adam Hanlon in goal whose saves which kept Tower's in the game right to the final whistle. The side has been together from age 4, and graduate to Under-13 level next year, having had a successful year at this grade. The side won a Cumann final in Parnell Park against St Colmcilles as well as performing well in Division 2 under the guidance of mentors Eric Byrne, Paul Whelan and Dennis Callanan. The team will hope to build on their years of development to challenge in the Feile in two years’ time.

UNDER 12 HURLERS AUTUMN TOURNAMENT On Saturday, 23rd November, our Under 12 hurlers travelled to Castleknock to play in the final of the St Kevin's Autumn Tournament. The following report has been brought together by team mentor Eric Byrne and Rob Heigh of The Gazette newspaper and will feature in this week's edition, published Thursday. ROUND TOWERS 5-3 CASTLEKNOCK 3-10 Round Tower's Under-12 hurlers, who play in Division 2, came away disappointed but pleased with their display from their meeting against Division 1 representatives Castleknock when they met last weekend in the final of the St Kevin's autumn tournament on the Crumlin Road. The team had battled hard in previous rounds and had reached the final after beating St Kevin's themselves and Ballyboden St Enda's. Although the side was missing six players through injury and other commitments, they put in an impressive performance, with a number of the injured players supporting the side from the sidelines. Both sides demonstrated their burgeoning talents in the first half, which ended with Castleknock two points ahead, 2-3 to 2-1. The first half goals came courtesy of Oisin Douglas, who scored from a free, and Leon Murphy, who took barely two minutes into his appearance, claimed the ball and drove to the net. With the Under-10s match finishing at halftime in this match, and the Tower's support increasing as those players, parents and supporters joined the sidelines, the second half once again saw both sides giving their all. Further goals were forthcoming for Tower's in the second half led by the influence of Alex O'Neill, whose play through the middle was important in keeping the team in contention, as were his goals, one from a free and two from open play. When the whistle blew, the points were not in Towers' favour, and the closest of margins separated the teams.
