ROUND TOWER 14th OCT. VOLUME 1. ISSUE 6
HURLING The hurling A.G.M. will take place on Thursday the 15/10/98. All concerned are asked to attend.
JUVENILE HURLING PRESENTATION The presentation took place on Sunday 11th and was a great success thanks to the organization skills of the mentors. Dublin player Connor Mc Cann presented the trophies and scrolls to the teams. Connor due to other commitments had warned the Mentors that he would not be able to attend the presentation until after 5pm. So the mentors decided to hold a table quiz and raffle from 4pm to 5pm this though noisy, 9especially when part of the music for Riverdance was played) was judged by the kids to be great crack. The Chairman of the hurling section Padge Byrne before introducing Connor McCann gave a small speech congratulating all the players for their great showing during the season and wished them success in the future. Connor McCann said that he had played many a game against Round Tower in the past and had always found them a though side to beat. He encouraged the kids to wear their safety gear, and to keep up the good work.
A special thanks you to the parents who made the delicious Sandwiches. Great credit also to Catherine Moran, Denis Callanan. Gerry Browne, Shea Brady, Pat Lawless and many more, who helped to make the day.
FOOTBALL Round Tower 1-11 St Judes 3-13 The senior footballers finished their league campaign on Sunday last when they went under to St Judes at Tymon Park. The game was played in very windy conditions which favored Towers in the first half but at half time they led by only two points, far to little facing i8nto the wind. Lucan Sarsfields also beat the Junior team. Unfortunately Templeogue also beat the minors. But there was a good win for our under 15s against St Marks.
LADIES FOOTBALL SENIORS TEAM On Sunday October 4th 98, the Louth ladies football team recorded their first ever all Ireland title by winning the Junior All Ireland Final. On what should have been a most memorable day for the Reynolds family from Bragstown, Castlebellingham. Cathy Reynolds (Sister of Anne) received the Junior cup. But their celebrations were soon overshadowed by the tragic and unexpected death of their Father Brian who was present at the match in Croke Park.
Aine a member of Round Towers Club, and to us a popular and likeable character, and most valuable player and loyal teammate of the Ladies Senior team. We wish to express our great sorrow on her very sad loss. Aine and Cathy no doubt have taken many a leaf from their late father’s book, both on and of the pitch, and Cathy has been well known to throw her boots on for Towers in numerous challenge matches. She’s also a regular visitor to us. We would also wish to extend to Aine and Cathy’s mother Mary, brothers Gerry and Brian also their sister May, our deepest condolences on their breavement. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all. May he rest in peace. On behalf of the Round Tower’s Ladies Senior Team.
Annette Harrington ************************* On Wednesday night Oct 14th the Ladies football team will relive the Junior Championship final on video at 9pm in the Club all are welcome.
REST IN PEACE The Executive and the members of Round Tower wish to express their sympathies to Alexis Fitzgerald, family and friends. On the death of his brother Martin. Who died last Sunday. Martin, who was the eldest son of a family of fourteen, from Ballingary close to Urlingford Tipperary. He worked as an agricultural adviser. He also
hurled in the fifties for Dublin and UCD. Although he came from Tipperary he loved Dublin, in fact becoming more of a Dub then the Dubs themselves. Alexis who has been a member of the Club for many years., and is known as a great Tower’s man, supporting the club in anyway he can. The respect and position that he holds in the club was evident, by the number of Tower’s people who attended the removal to Seabury Church Malahide. Martin will be interred at home in Ballingary. We pray for the repose of his soul, and will remember him in our Prayers. May he rest in peace.
will enjoy the craic and hopefully the hurlers will give us a good reason to celebrate. Bain taitneamh as,

In two weeks time the Tower’s hurlers will travel to Tralee to defend the Oíreachtaís title won in Belfast last year. The Oíreachtaís has become an annual fixture in the hurling year, and it is always a great sporting and social occasion. The response from the Club members this year shows the growing interest in the competition and is a fitting way to end the hurling year. The Oíreachtaís is also an “Irish” celebration, and every effort should be made to use the “Cúple focil” whenever possible. I’m sure whoever makes the journey to Tralee

MATCH REPORTS FROM THE MENTORS AND SUPPORTERS
Minor football ROUND TOWER 1-8 TEMPLEOGUE 1-10
Junior Football Div 2 ROUND TOWER 2-8 LUCAN SARSFIELDS 3-10
Sunday morning last saw a top of the table clash between Towers and their Lucan rivals. On a perfect day for football the Tower’s lads started very sluggishly and an energetic Lucan team capitalized on this, scoring freely. However a bright period just before the half time whistle ensured Towers went in, still in touch. The second half opened brightly for the Clo9ndalkin lads clawing back a 5-point deficit. Just as it seemed they might snatch a victory, Lucan responded with a late goal followed by two late points, which resigned Towers to a rare defeat. Despite the defeat, Towers still remain in contention for the Division 2 title, and their next game on Sunday week will have added importance, given last Sunday’s set back. Goalkeeper: Barry Desmond Backs: Brian Cosgrove, Martin Ryan, John Ryan, Brian Dunne (1-2), Paul Lanigan and Simon Owens. Mid field: Brian Sheeran (0-1), Darren O’Mara (01). Forwards: Niall Cosgrove (0-3), John O’Malley (0-1), Alan Milton (1-0), Ciaran Delaney, Eamon Connolly and Kevin Lyons. SUBS: Niall Gill for Ciaran Delaney. REPORT BY
Alan Milton PLAYER
The Minor team traveled to Templeogue Sunday morning under strength due to injury and lack of interest and commitment on some behalf. The players settled into the game well with a point from a tight angle from Darren Halpin. We led at halftime 5 points to 4, having to play into a strong wind and up hill in the second half. Hit by an early goal shortly after half time and 3 quick points, our fourteen men stormed back with 2 points from Eoin Burke, who was suffering from a virus from Saturday evening. And a brilliant goal from man of the match Damien Murray. We swapped points from there to the finish, but alas lost by two points. Every player put in a good performance. Team: Stephen Halpin, Geroid Brennan, Brian Corless, David Costello, Niall Kelly, Enda Corcoran, Barry Gallagher, Damien Murray, Michael Henrey, Dereck Murray ©, Eoin Burke, Eoin Lanagan, Darren Halpin and Patrick McGrath. UNDER 14 FOOTBALL A win at last for the under 14 footballers. Towers defeated Ballymun in a hard fought match on a scoreline of 2-8 to 2-6. Playing against the breeze in the first half. Towers led led at half time by 1-6 to 0-2, and a big win seemed on the cards. But
Ballymun fought hard and scored two goals in quick succession mid-way through the half to narrow the gap, but Towers responded quickly with an excellent goal from Chris Fahy. Hopefully this win will boost the confidence of the team for the rest of the season. Scorers: R. Murphy 1-2, C. Fahy 1-2, I. Ward 0-2, K. Kenny 0-1, J. Mc Hugh 0-1. REPORT BY
Gerry Banks P.S. Apologies to Catherine Moran for forgetting to mention her tremendous vocal support in that match against Na Fianna.
Gerry Banks UNDER 12 FOOTBALL ROUND TOWER 4-8 LIFFEY GAELS 5-9
The Mentors and players of the under 12 football team, would again like to express their gratitude and thanks to Caroline and Peter Thornton of Snow White Cleaners and Launderette for their resent sponsorship of a new set of jerseys. Last Saturday, the team took on Liffey Gaels in a bruising home encounter. They held the lead for most of the game, which was very fast moving and high scoring. Michael John Delaney was busy in goal and pulled off several saves. Particularly highballs which tested his confidence. Alan O’Brien at right halfback had to use his rapid speed and perseverance to get the better of his strong opponent. While Vincent Dunphy at left halfback had his hands full containing what was undeniably the best female opponent this team has come across. Liffey Gaels half back and mid-field were physically big
and strong and the referee approach to keep the game flowing, left our boys pretty bruised to say the least. In the end either team could have won but Liffey Gaels finished with a narrow margin win. With both Niall Byrne and Allan Kehoe scoring late points and unlucky not to find the net. REPORT BY

Under 11 football ROUND TOWER 4-5 ST JUDES 2-8
The under 11 traveled across the M50 to meet St Judes. A team we had not got the pleasure of playing until this season. Five position changes were made to the tower’s squad prior to the start. Barry Finn got his much looked after spot in the centre half forward area and proved his worth by recording his first goal of the season. The other goals scored were from Padraig Mc Geever, Locko, and a beauty from Finbar Donegan. Points from Shane Byrne, Locko and Diarmuid Cronin. Jason Dowling moved from RCB to midfield, where he played magi8c footwork. Brien-Reilly-Troy and Barry Kehoe changed numbers with Brien taking up full back and Kehoe carrying No6. Padraig Kenny moved from CHF to RCB where he saved a goal when it slipped in past our goalie. He also got some important possession and cleared along the sidelines. Kevin Carroll and James McCarthy put in a great effort along the wings. Team:
Goal: Dwayne Delaney. Backs: Padraig Kenny, Brien-Reilly-Troy, James McCarthy, Finbar Donegan, Barry Kehoe and Kevin Carroll. Mid-field: Darren Molloy and Jason Dowling. Forwards: Stephen Callanan, Barry Finn, Darren O’Loughlin, Padraig Mc Geever, Daniel Delehan and Shane Byrne. Subs: Patrick Brady for Donegan, Diarmuid Cronin for Callanan, Jason Mockler for Mc Geever, Michael Skelly for Byrne, Colm Hanlon for O’Loughlin, Enda Mc Nally for Kenny. REPORT BY

Eugene Garrigan A PART OF ROUND TOWER’S HISTORY Here is another article from the Round Tower’s Centenary Tournament pro gram 1984. It is just titled Cumann An Chloighti. I have picked this article so that anyone including myself who would like to know more about the Club and it’s History but did know where to find it. THE EDITOR. “In December 1884, one month after the GAA was founded, a group of men gathered in Clondalkin to form a Gaelic football Club. Among those present were D. Molloy, J. Wixted, J. Carroll, J. Keogh, C. Ryder, P. Doran, The Errity brothers, one of whom, Tom was later to win All Ireland Senior medals with Dublin in 92, 94, 98, 99 and 1902. Towers won their first competition, the Baltyboys Tournament in 1889. They won their first Dublin Trophy, the junior league in 1910 with Matt Nolan as Captain. They again won the junior league and junior championship in 1926 and would you believe it – with Matt Nolan as Captain. Success in the Leixlip tournament of 1928 is noteworthy because St Marys Leixlip included the two Kildare “greats” Larry Stanley
and Matt Goff. The Club had attained Senior status in the thirties and three of it’s members. Tom Dowd, Paddy Hickey and Billy Dowling played for Dublin and Leinster. The club lost the 1941 junior Championship but won the 1942 league to regain Senior status. They contested the Intermediate Championship finals in 1948, 1950 and 1951 and defeated O’Dwyers in the I.L.F . in 1951, and went on to win the Intermediate Championship in 1952. Winners of the under 21 Dublin Championship in it’s inauguration year 1964, this same team challenged strongly for Senior championship honours up to 1970. G. Freyne, P. Barrett, G. Gray, D. Keating, T. Higgins and C. Dowling were all prominent members of that team. Paddy Delaney, his son Tony, Fred Kavanagh and Michael Egan are all holders of All-Ireland medals”.
DUBLIN DEVELOPMENT SQUAD Congratulations to all the players that were picked for the Dublin Under 15 and 16 Development Squads. Keeping a tradition alive.
Under 15 Championship Congratulations to the Under 15 on their great victory over St Marks last Sunday. By all reports a full strength Towers team over powered the St Mark’s men. Well done lads.
Liam said that he will give me a report on this game for the next Newsletter.
I’m sorry but there is no more news fo the Newsletter this week. Anyone with anything to put into the Newsletter try and hand it in at the bar on Monday nights so that it can be entered into the current issue. Otherwise it will have to wait a week. I’m sure that some of the older members have stories or reports from matches past. I would be only delighted to receive these items to enter into the Newsletter. THE EDITOR
