Project Description Main goal of this project: conservation, promoting and protecting of biodiversity of Sharplaninian sheep dog. The activities including the genome identification resulted in the definition of ''identity card" of this indigenous dog breed in the Republic of Macedonia. Main activities: • Comparison od breed standards, establishment of pedigree database, Selection of Sharplaninian sheep dog which are characteristic representatives of the breed, determine the degree of variability of the breed at the DNA level, • The selection of a new locations spots (sheep farms) and new interested breeders in Northeastern and Southwestern Region of the Republic Macedonia through the inclusion of new kennels, • Breeding Sharplaninian sheep dog in its natural environment, reintroduction on the sheep farms with providing continuing veterinary care and food supply of the Sharplaninian sheep dog offspring, • Public awareness campaign and promotion of project activities/ results. Project achievements • Visited registered dog-breeders, collected more than 100 samples biological material, carried out complete assessment of 150 Sharplaninian sheep dog and recorded them in the database for Sharplaninian sheep dog, • Established a database of Sharplaninian sheep dog that covers the population of the Sharplaninian sheep dog, the sheep herd breed, with recorded more than 150 individual dogs. The Database contains phenotypic data, qualitative features and information on quantitative characteristics of the recorded dogs. It is complemented with data from Kennel Association of R. Macedonia compiled since 1998 with the currently available information on the Sharplaninian sheep dog. Collected information on the degree of variability in the population at the DNA level allowed in depth knowledge of the genome of the Sharplaninian sheep dog, and for the first time of this scope, an analysis of the genome of Sharplaninian sheep dog has been performed, • Identified rural areas in Northeastern and Southwestern Region of the Republic Macedonia and interested breeders that enabled location of ten new sites where new Sharplaninian sheep dog were donated, • Breed healthy offspring of 33 Sharplaninian sheep dog that were distributed to new farmers in order to ensure the reintroduction of the breed, • Prepared, printed and distributed leaflets, posters and educational brochure on the breed standards and informed general Macedonian population with the project activities and results, • Project activities initiated amendments in the legislation that resulted with obtaining legal recognition of the Sharplaninian sheep dog as an indigenous breed and secured subsidies for Sharplaninian sheep dog when having a certain number of sheep or goats. Follow up MES will continue to promote the project results and replication of project activities in future in other regions in the country but with an increased volume of activities and results.
