Objectives The Australian Synchrotron offers postgraduate top-up scholarship awards to support outstanding students engaged in postgraduate research that involves major use of the facility. Up to ten awards will be offered at any one time, in two rounds per year. Terminology: ASPA

Australian Synchrotron Postgraduate Award

1. Qualifications  Applicants must have completed, or expect to complete within 6 months a Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Engineering with Honours (or equivalent) and to be enrolled, or expect to enrol within 6 months in a higher degree course at an eligible Australian university.

2. Description of Award  The awards are offered as top-ups to candidates with an Australian Postgraduate Award (APA) or an equivalent university scholarship, who are enrolled in an eligible Australian university for a Doctor of Philosophy or equivalent.  Under exceptional circumstances full scholarships will be offered.

Location and Duration  The student will normally be based at the university in which they are enrolled, but will be expected to spend at least 3 weeks per annum at the Australian Synchrotron for the purpose of receiving training and using these facilities in connection with the approved research project.  A member of the scientific staff at the Australian Synchrotron will be an Associate Supervisor of the student.

5. Project  The research project shall be proposed by the nominating university and shall be directly concerned with the Australian Synchrotron. See the Australian Synchrotron website for the complete list of facilities and services.

6. Tenure  Total duration of an ASPA is at Australian Synchrotron's discretion, and is subject to annual review. It is expected that the experimental component of the research program requiring access to the Australian Synchrotron facilities will be completed within three years of postgraduate study leading to the award of a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree. Awards will normally be taken up at the commencement of the postgraduate study; however under some circumstances a student who has already begun their study may be given an award.  Under exceptional circumstances only the award may be extended into part of a fourth year at the discretion of the Australian Synchrotron.  Australian Synchrotron may terminate an Award at any time if it is not satisfied with the progress or conduct of a student, or for any other reason. Tenure will terminate in any case on the date on which the student submits to his/her university for examination a thesis for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy.

Funding is paid to, and administered by, the university in which the student is enrolled. Responsibility for establishing taxation liability lies with the Award recipient.

8. Reports  A report in a pro-forma template (to be supplied) on the progress of the project, signed by the student's university supervisor, must be submitted to Australian Synchrotron one month prior to 12 month anniversary of commencement.  The student will continue to report each year until the research outcomes have been submitted. It is expected that a copy of the research outcomes will be presented to Australian Synchrotron upon completion.

9. Publications & Confidentiality  It is expected that appropriate acknowledgment to Australian Synchrotron will be made by the student or ex-holder of an ASPA when any material embodying the results of work undertaken during tenure of the Award is submitted for publication. No material resulting from work carried out at the Australian Synchrotron should be submitted for publication without the approval of the university supervisor. It is expected that copies of any such publications will be presented to Australian Synchrotron.

10. Agreement  Should the applicant be successful, execution of an Agreement, between ASCo and the applicant’s university, that outlines the terms and conditions of the ASPA will be required. The draft Agreement is available upon request.
