Ribbon Cutting Ceremony Officially Opens Fairfield Career and Technology Center The ribbon was cut at a ceremony last Wednesday officially marking the opening of the newly constructed Fairfield Career and Technology Center (FCTC). FCTC Director Christopher Dinkins welcomed the large crowd of students, community members, and officials gathered in front of the school. The $17 million facility will be home to more than a dozen programs, including fire and emergency services, master hair care, welding, and engineering. Superintendent of Schools, Dr. J. R. Green, recognized the many people involved in the project and commended FCTC teachers and staff for their efforts during the construction period. “This is an exciting time as we celebrate a new beginning in Fairfield. The center only adds to the wonderful opportunities we are providing students in Fairfield County.” Green said. The long-awaited facility enables seamless transition for students to take traditional classes and explore new career tracks. In closing, Superintendent Dr. J. R. Green said Wednesday’s ceremony marks the turning of the page in the history of Fairfield County School District. “We do not know what will be written about tomorrow, but we enter this school with confidence that the story will be good.”

Congratulations Ms. Kaitlin Rexrode Ms. Rexrode is a child development instructor at McCrorey Liston School of Technology. She believes that it’s her responsibility to find a way to connect with every child she interacts with. Ms. Rexrode understands that as a teacher, she needs to be an advocate for her students and their families. She wants to recognize their needs, and help them get their needs met. Her greatest contribution to her students is inspiring them to do their best each day, and to grow to be outstanding students, and most importantly, outstanding individuals. Fairfield Middle School and Fairfield Central High School students will have the opportunity to participate in a new orchestra program in the district during the 2015-2016 school year. Katie Holaway, strings educator, will teach 7th -12th graders in beginning and intermediate classes. Holaway is a recent graduate of the University of South Carolina, with a Master of Arts in Teaching. She has been on the recruiting trail over the summer in order to find students who may be interested in the program. Any student in the 7th - 12th grade who is interested in enrolling in one of the orchestra classes should contact the guidance department at FMS or FCHS.

FCSD: Excellence through Teamwork Roper Mountain Science Center is pleased to announce that three Fairfield County teachers attended the Science P.L.U.S. Institute during the summer of 2015. The Institute, 100% funded by a South Carolina Improvement Act (EIA) grant, gives intensive training in science teaching methods and activities to public school science teachers from throughout the State of South Carolina.

The Institute emphasizes the Center’s belief that all students deserve a good science education. Participating were Brooke Alberson (Fairfield Magnet School for Math and Science), Dr. Rolando Curabo (Fairfield Middle School) and Lynne Thomas (Fairfield Middle School). A major goal of the Science P.L.U.S. Institute is to provide teachers the resources needed to do hands-on science activities with their students.

Through the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act championed by the First Lady Michelle Obama and signed by President Barack Obama, USDA made the first major changes in school meals in 15 years, which will help us raise a healthier generation of children. This rule requires schools to increase the availability of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and fat-free and low-fat fluid milk in school meals; reduce the levels of sodium, saturated fat and trans fat in meals; and meet the nutrition needs of school children within their calorie requirements. FCSD breakfast and lunch menus are available online: www.fairfield.k12.sc.us (look under the Food Services Division).
