Faith, Knowledge, & Tradition! Written by CCHS Principal David Wieters

August 2016

WOW, Where Did Summer Go!?! I hope you've all had a great summer. The weather is everything we hoped it would be when we were complaining about the cold last January and February. The building has been cleaned and prepped, the Main Gym has been repainted/refinished and everything looks great! (and the Cubs are in first place!) It doesn’t get much better than that! We had the great pleasure in the past few months to add to our 2016-17 teaching staff. Our new Art and Design Teacher, Amanda Hoeppner, is featured in our Who’s Who at Catholic Central feature on the next page. We would like to welcome back one of our “new” English Teachers, Cindy Yopp, who taught at Catholic Central from 1993-2003. Cindy will be a great addition to our school. Our other new English Teacher is Kaitlin Wiza. Kaitlin taught High School English at Sevastopol High School for three years and has experience teaching A.P. Literature. We are fortunate to have her join our staff. Our new Music Teacher, Luke Moyta, recently graduated from VanderCook College of Music with a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education. Luke was the unanimous choice of the interview team for the position from a number of very qualified and experienced candidates. He comes highly recommended and will make a real difference in the lives of our students. We are currently interviewing for our open Theology teaching position from a number of great candidates and will have an outstanding educator to take over the position very soon. Our new hires, along with our returning staff, will have a huge impact on our students here at Catholic Central. A few new courses have been added this year for our students: They are AP American Government, AP Physics, Future Educators and Sacred Music. These courses will better prepare out students for postsecondary success. Still thinking about enrolling at Catholic Central for next year? We still have spots open, so if you are interested, contact Karen Schwenn at 262-763-1510 x225. To wrap up, thanks so much to all of you for your support, as it is a pleasure to be a part of our Catholic Central High School Family!

You’re Invited! We invite ALL of our Catholic Central High School Families to our Welcome Back Mass on Sunday afternoon, August 14th at 4:00 pm in St. Mary’s Church, to be followed by a picnic dinner. Our school year begins on August 15th for Freshmen (Orientation and Retreat), with iPad handout on the afternoon of August 15th for Sophomores - Seniors. Classes begin for all students on August 16th.

Tuesday, August 9th is the Safeguarding All of God’s Family training. It will be held here at CCHS in Topper Hall beginning promptly at 6:00 pm. For those of you who plan to volunteer here on our campus it is required that you take this class. You can register online by going to www.archmil.org and clicking on the Safeguarding All of God’s Family (formerly VIRTUS) Safe Environment Education Sessions and Resources link (located on the lower right side of the page).

Who’s Who at Catholic Central Here is a quick background on two of our staff members. We would first like to introduce you to Amanda Hoeppner: Amanda is our new Art and Design Teacher here at Catholic Central High School. Amanda is originally from Lake Mills, WI. She attended Lakeside Lutheran High School, where she received a Track and Field scholarship to attend the University of Wisconsin Amanda Hoeppner – Madison. Amanda graduated from UW with a Bachelor’s Degree in Art with Certification in Education. Prior to coming to Catholic Central, she taught Art at Westfield Elementary School. Amanda was also the Head Coach of the Westfield High School Track and Field Program as well as the J.V. Volleyball Coach. She is very excited for this new chapter in her life and is eager to meet everyone. We are truly blessed to have such an enthusiastic and caring person as Amanda join our Catholic Central Family! Our second Catholic Central High School staff member we would like to introduce you to this month is John Baumgardner. John is a seminarian for the Archdiocese of Milwaukee and his parish assignment for the summer is St. Francis de Sales. He will be ordained to the transitional diaconate in September, and then to the priesthood in July of 2017. Each summer, the seminary John Baumgardner faculty asks the seminarians to be responsible for a “special project” in the parish they are assigned. John’s “project” is volunteering to be the seminarian chaplain for our Catholic Central High School Football Team this summer. He looks forward to the opportunity to teach/be a chaplain in our high school. John’s faith and sports are both important to him. He attended Pius XI High School, where he played varsity football (quarterback), baseball, and ran track & field. Prior to attending seminary, John attended the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, MN and was a member of the (...continued in adjacent column)

football team for two years. He also has experience working with young people, as he has been involved with the parish youth group at St. Francis de Sales. John also is currently a member of the chaplaincy team for the University of Dallas, and served on summer staff at Catholic Youth Expeditions, a Catholic youth camp for teens/young adults in the Green Bay diocese. Thank you for all that you do for our students and being a part of our Catholic Central High School Family!

Many thanks to Dennis and Dian Lynch for hosting this event at their home on Brown’s Lake! The Lynches have been doing this welcoming activity for many years. Catholic Central High School Student Ambassadors

Our Catholic Central Student Ambassadors did a great job working with our incoming Freshman at the Annual Freshmen Ambassadors’ Picnic on August 1st. They met our new Freshmen, shared introductions, played some icebreaking games, assisted them on a scavenger hunt throughout the school, and held a question and answer session to alleviate any concerns the Freshmen might have coming to high school. They did a marvelous job of welcoming the Class of 2020 to Catholic Central High School! Thank you Karen Schwenn and Ambassadors!

Welcome to Catholic Central!

Foreign Exchange Student? We are looking for families to consider hosting a foreign exchange student for this school year. Our foreign exchange students are always a joy as they share their culture, and mesh with host families and our student body. There are financial benefits involved for a host family, and the experience is tremendously gratifying. If anyone has an interest, please contact Karen Schwenn in our Admission Office at (262) 763-1510225.

TOPPER DINNER & AUCTION Several of our Student Ambassadors greeting Freshmen during our Ambassador’s Freshmen Picnic. Due to the fact that we are beginning classes before Burlington Area School District, there will be no Thomas Bus service for our CCHS students until September 1st . Our CCHS mini buses will run their routes. Our lunch program will be serving hot lunch. FYI Freshmen will receive lunch at their orientation/retreat on August 15th (7:30 am - 3:00 pm).

This is a great night and the single biggest fundraiser for our school. Once again we will be at Veterans’ Terrace on December 3rd starting at 5:00 pm. Contact our Development Director, Georgean Selburg, at 763-1510 x423 for tickets or more information.
