What a fun and exciting start we have had to our school year. The first two days were spent getting to know each other through games and writing assignments. Each classroom is full of so many neat little personalities! We love them already! We will spend the next few weeks building a classroom community and practicing our daily classroom rules and procedures that were learned the first few days of school. Please keep in mind that conduct grades may be unexpectedly low the first few weeks as we try to set our classes on the best path. We are all excited about this school year and look forward to learning and working with your child. Remember our doors are always open! Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns. Third Grade Teachers Please make sure that your child has tennis shoes for PE. It is in the student handbook that students should wear tennis shoes during PE for safety reasons. If your child wears flip flops or sandals to school please send them with a change of shoes.
IMPORTANT!!! This newsletter is good for two weeks of school. A copy of this newsletter and other informative items can be located on the school website under Classrooms then choose Third Grade. Please check the school website for additional copies of the newsletter. Your child’s homework for the next two weeks is listed on the back of this newsletter. Please keep it in a safe place. Homework is turned in each Friday. Homework is checked and taken for a completion grade each Friday. NO LATE HOMEWORK WILL BE ACCEPECTED!
Please make sure your child has headphones for the computer lab and classroom centers. We ask each child to have his/ her own pair to help cut down on sharing head lice.
On Monday, we will begin our first unit of our new reading program Foundations and Frameworks. With this new program your child will be reading novels instead of focusing on a weekly reading story. The focus of Foundations and Frameworks is to teach students to think about the text they are reading and respond in writing or through discussion. There will be twelve units throughout the year that focus on different comprehension skills. Each unit should last three to four weeks. Our first unit will focus on sequence and will involve mystery novels. This will be a major adjustment for students, parents, and teachers. More information about the program will be sent home next week. We ask that you contact us with any questions or concerns and bear with us as we take this leap to create better readers and thinkers.
You are all invited and strongly encouraged to attend our Third Grade Parent Meeting on Monday, August 10th at 5:50 pm. Third Grade is a huge transition year for your child. We want to make sure that you are well informed of third grade expectaions. We hope to see you there.

If you would like to donate please make your check payable to Eden Elementary School. Thank you for all that you do to support our classrooms. Accelerated Reader Your child will be asked to earn points toward an individual goal each nine weeks in AR. Some time will be given in class for your child to read and take AR tests, but the majority of reading will need to take place at home. Each student should spend 20 minutes reading each night for homework. You should receive updates periodically as to your child’s current AR point standing. You may also have your child log in from home and check their points. Please help your child set aside time to read nightly.

It has come to our attention that students entering third grade are still struggling with knowing their addition and subtraction facts. Therefore, we will spend the first few weeks reviewing basic addition and subtraction facts. We will take multiple timed tests throughout each week. One timed test will be used as a math quiz grade each week. There are lots of great websites and apps that you might use to help your student practice facts for five or ten minutes each night. Flashcards are always great. We will begin memorizing multiplication facts in September. Addition and subtraction facts tests will continue throughout the school year.
