Newsletter www.latimerartclub.com

Message from the President Hi Everyone Coming up now is the August meeting … the meeting when we offer the membership a chance to participate in the club by volunteering to serve as an officer. The following offices are open for your consideration: President; Vice-president; Secretary; Treasurer; Newsletter Editor/Corresponding Secretary. This is your chance to offer exciting new ideas and bring new thought to the club. We are trying to improve the quality of the club and, as a result, the membership will grow. But our overall goal is to make the club better. Over the past couple years we have introduced the website and got it up and running and greatly improved in visual appearance and content or our Newsletter … all thanks to the hard work of the members who served as officers and their assistants. In addition, the plein air painting trips have been expanded so that you all could enjoy various sites around Reno. A committee will be appointed to handle the elections of officers. This is called the Nominating Committee. We will need a couple volunteers for that committee also. You can serve on that committee and still run for office. We hope all of you will give it serious consideration. It will not be presumptuous to volunteer for any office you are willing to serve in...so please volunteer. Thank you,

Maurice

SKETCHING FOR THE FUN OF IT by Maurice Hershberger, President. Summertime is always a great time... an enjoyable time …. a time for vacations. Are you taking your sketch book along on your travels this year? Sketch books are simple, easy and fun. A sketch can take 10 minutes or an hour or more... whatever you want to make it. Take you book and do some simple, easy sketches... line drawings with maybe a little color accents. A complete picture is not necessary. Keep it simple. Try to set yourself a goal … like a sketch a day–whether you travel or not …. 10 minutes. This is all about pictures today... little pictures. Enjoy. Here is a sketch of a village (artist unknown; found on Pinterest). Notice the simple use of colors here.... and the pure simplicity of this sketch. Draw anything that you might see or have an interest in. When you actually sketch something it becomes yours... a part of you. Draw your own town or village, the coffee shop or the corner store. Capture some people walking by. Draw someone's legs or shoes. You can do this while waiting for a plane.

(Unknown Artists)

The style makes no difference. No one cares... no one may ever see this but you, and you can always turn it into a bigger painting later.

Sketch a flower or herb plant.... whether as part of your travels or something growing around your house. A sketch a day is always fun.

(

Paint a tower or lighthouse. It always exciting to preserve your thoughts and feelings surrounding a lighthouse. You’ll remember it forever.

Focus on someone's face. A face in the crowd... Or someone you know.... Someone you are traveling with.

Catch someone at the beach with their friends. Reduce the figures to the bare minimum. Create some excitement. (Maybe you should not let them see your sketch, though). Whatever it is that captures your eye.... sketch it. You will bring back memories that will last and from which you can create larger works.

These are all small drawings...some simple, some more elaborate, but all something you can do. Fun Stuff. Hopefully they give you some ideas to work from. Use your pencil; a waterproof pen; watercolor box; watercolor pencils... whatever you like most, or try something new.... just get out there and do some sketching. It's your journal. Doesn't have to be great. No one has to like it or approve of it.... it's yours. Put more than one thing on a page... mix it up a little. Write a journal page with the sketch. This is art. Have fun with your art. Sketching is quick and easy. You are capturing an idea. Go to my Pinterest site. Type this in your search engine window: Pinterest Maurice Hershberger. By Linda Walker, Exhibit Chair

Thank you to all who entered at Reno's First United Methodist Church. It was a very unique and interesting exhibit and also fitting for the summertime when lots of people are thinking about traveling. I also want to give a special THANK YOU to Nan Lathrop and Carol Foldvary Anderson for all the time and effort in putting out extra publicity regarding the exhibit in various publications around Reno. Of course I also want to thank all of you who came in to art-sit. Every time slot was covered and everyone came in when they were scheduled. John Denton deserves a special THANK YOU for coming in a total of EIGHT days! The rest of you came in to art-sit at least a half day. Two artists paid the extra $10 because they were unable to come in. This left only a few days open for church members to fill. John Denton also helped set up and take down the stands, along with Maurice Hershberger, and Carolyn Holt and her husband Ken. The Hanging committee did a fine job; special thanks to Eileen Fuller, Vicki Curwen and Nan Lathrop. We had one sale from the regular exhibit, Maurice Hershberger's "Entrance to Courtyard" and two giclee prints of "Frozen Sunset" by Linda Walker sold from the donated section to benefit the Scholarship Fund..We would have been happier with more sales, of course, but it has been a very popular exhibit and we get so many compliments from church members and the general public. The exhibit was very well attended during the day and especially after the Tuesday night concerts. An added bonus to attendance was on Wednesday and Saturday when the beautiful sanctuary was open for three hours for tours and the parlor was also. Marge Smith attempted to estimate the number of visitor and reported that we had approximately 636 visitors to the exhibit, including about 50 people that came into the parlor for refreshments after each the four Tuesday night concerts.
