District at a Glance Fall 2016 Learners have a voice and choice for self-directed, customized learning supported by a caring and progressive network of educators The South Western School District vision was unanimously adopted by the Board of Directors in May, 2014. The goal of the vision is to develop structures and customize practices that enable learners to be successful in a world of ever-increasing change. As part of the district vision, young and adult learners need to have a voice and choice in personalizing their education. Learners need to be able to initiate, manage, and maintain their own learning to meet an ever-changing, unpredictable future. Extensive professional learning for the staff is being re-designed to model and assist with the shift from student to learner and teacher to facilitator of learning. An essential part of this plan includes the distribution of a technology device to all learners so they can learn anytime, anywhere. At this time, learners in grades 5-12 have received a district-owned technology device that enables access to resources to support their learning, in and out of the classroom, and to move at their own pace as they plan their educational choices for the future. At the present time, learners in grades K-4 have devices to use that remain in school. The goal for all learners is to develop the skills to be independent lifelong learners, confident to take on change, eager to be risk-takers and prepared with the skills to ensure their personal success, long after they have graduated from South Western High School.
