As L3 grows in size, the scope and diversity of programs and events is growing, as well. I’m very proud to announce the August kickoff of our long-awaited Foundation offering. Phase One, our comprehensive web-based Information and Resource Center, will connect you to a world of professionally-selected news, information and tools that will help you see your own giving in a national and international context, and help you plan and execute the best philanthropic approach for you and your family. The section will also profile some of the many L3 members who are advancing positive change in their own communities and across the globe. As our Foundation Gateway continues to evolve, we’ll be announcing L3 Learning Exchange events. These short phone/web conferences and seminars will feature insight and information from leaders in the world of philanthropy, including our own members Ellen Remmer and Foundation Council Leader Ken Gladish. Next year, you will also have important opportunities to attend major conferences on philanthropy, as well as exclusive L3 seminars developed to meet our members’ immediate interests. In addition, this fall we will also launch a unique and ambitious Health and Wellness offering, which will open a direct, personal line for our members to the newest research, the most reliable wellness programs, and the brightest medical minds available. Of course, increasing our membership also increases our ability to provide diverse programs. That’s why most of this Newsletter is devoted to membership, with tips on how to comfortably and naturally talk about L3 with people you know. L3 is not for everyone—in fact, we are exclusively for people like you, and they are waiting for you to tell them about it. I look forward to seeing you at a gathering, Retreat, or Purposeful Travel journey in the very near future. —Tammy How L3 Grows Observations from Involved Members “We join most organizations because of how they will help us meet our goals. The point of L3 is to meet and learn from people who share them.” —Bob McLennan, Co-Chair, Membership Committee Bob and Becky McLennan are among the Founding Members of L3, and have committed the many hours needed for member development because it is both challenging and highly rewarding. “L3 was established to provide something unique and needed for people who have already achieved their career goals and are making a notable difference for

others,” Bob says. Those are exactly the people, he points out, whose full calendars and full lives seem to leave no time for anything new. He points out that most potential members become interested in L3 only when a trusted peer tells them about it, and they meet a number of members. “When people realize that L3 will open new avenues of friendship based on shared goals and values, at a moment in life when we are truly looking for deeper meaning in everything we do, they are often moved to make the time to participate,” Bob explains. Members who are active in L3, participating in events, helping to shape the organization as Gateway Council members, or simply keeping track of member news and events on the website, are those most likely to be among the 90% who renew. “It takes time to explain L3 to potential members,” Bob explains, “It’s hard to explain in the abstract. But once people experience L3, they get so much satisfaction from the relationships they form, it’s rewarding to be part of bringing them on board.” Tip from Bob: Before you introduce a friend to L3, find out whether they meet the qualifications for membership (described later in this newsletter). Get details about how you can sponsor a new member. “The most important philosophical quest is not ‘what is the meaning of life,’ but rather, ‘what is the meaning of my life.' " —Mike Regan, quoting Dr. Mardy Grothe The Chicago, Illinois area is home to more than 50 L3 members…and Mike Regan, a Founding Member and Wisdom Council Leader, is one of the reasons why. He explains that when people of achievement find themselves looking for ways to add new dimensions of meaning in their lives, they want to meet people on the same wavelength. But that may not be easy. “It’s not something that comes up in everyday conversation,” Mike says, “so when folks realize we have an organization that not only allows for that kind of dialogue but actually creates a context for it, they are very interested.” Mike says he never tries to “sell” L3 to anyone: it’s more a question of letting people in on the fact of our organization’s existence. “When there’s a natural reason to mention L3, I always do,” says Mike. “I do a lot of mentioning…but I only add more information if someone actually asks me for it.” When someone does become interested, the next step is usually to introduce that person to other members, usually through a local member gathering. Once someone becomes interested, Mike says, the high level of support available from the L3 staff, including Director of Member Relations Monique Maley and Executive Director Tammy Hale, makes it very smooth and comfortable to make introductions. Mike has most recently sponsored Jordan and Jan Ayan. Jordan is a speaker and author on the subject of creativity—you can check out his books, including, 'Aha! - 10 Ways to Free Your Creative Spirit and Find Your Great Ideas' on Amazon. Tip from Mike: An L3 Regional Gathering is a great way to keep in touch with other L3 members, and the best possible way to help prospective members understand how this group is so completely different from any other organization. See details about hosting and the great support available to make it simple. Member gatherings are currently scheduled in Philadelphia, New York, Houston, Boston, Los Angeles, Lexington, Kentucky, Orange Countyand Mexico City. Visit your dashboard for the calendar and links to details. “L3 puts you in the company of amazing people.” —Eddie Safady

Eddie Safady, another Founding Member and one of 50+ members from Texas, focuses more directly on the relationships he has been able to build through L3. “Every L3 member is an individual of great distinction,” he says. “Through this organization, people of great distinction can meet on simple terms, uncomplicated by hidden agendas or expectations.” It is the ability to be relaxed and open, to share thoughts and concerns among equals, to communicate seriously and explore ideas honestly, that is above all the reason to join L3, Eddie believes. “Every time you introduce L3 to someone new, you are adding someone remarkable to this unique pool of friends. That’s enriching in itself.” Tip from Eddie: Potential members of L3 are people you like, who care about the well-being of others. Who Should You Introduce to L3?

Forming new bonds with fellow members is an important benefit of L3. Pictured left to right at the Inaugural Retreat in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico are: Bob McLennan, Nan Guslander, Becky McLennan, Stephanie Levy and Mike Levy. Membership in L3 is open to only a select group of people: those who meet strict eligibility requirements; their spouses are enrolled as full, independent members as well. It’s best not to introduce people to L3 until you are fairly certain they are at least 45 years old, share your interest in giving back and growing as an individual, and meet the following criteria. Monique Maley, Director of Member Relations, is always happy to answer questions and support your efforts. General • Demonstrates high personal and professional ethical standards • Recognized in the community as a leader • Shows true concern about the well being of others, either in their immediate community or anywhere in the world

Career • If they come from a corporate setting, they must at any point in their career have been the most senior paid executive of an organization with a minimum of 60 full time employees (or the equivalent) who reported directly or indirectly to them for a minimum of five years, OR • They have been a leader in their career, defined as “a person of character who has led and managed others in a significant way by using their skill and influence in an inspirational manner.” Societal Contribution Satisfies ONE of the following requirements: • They have been a non-paid volunteer serving as an officer of some form of a not-for profit organization whose primary stated mission is to contribute to society and help make it a better place; or • They have demonstrated significant leadership or some other form of significant contribution, financial or otherwise, that has helped to make the world a better place; or • The candidate has not fulfilled leadership requirements, but has demonstrated (or spouse has demonstrated) commitment in some form to make the world a better place and has made a credible and sincere commitment to meet at least one of the leadership criteria in the future. How Can You Begin to Explain L3? The ideas behind L3 are abstract and can be hard to express in a concise way. Our Marketing Committee has refined the ideas into this one-line description that's worth repeating: L3 is a global organization of accomplished men and women who use their leadership skills to enrich their lives and those of others, as a cornerstone of their legacy. If someone is ready to hear more, here's our "elevator pitch"--a way to convey the essence of who we are and why membership is valuable in approximately 60-seconds: L3’s membership is comprised of established leaders both in their professions and in their commitment to improving the lives of others. L3 helps members connect with each other on a personal level. L3 organizes resources and experiences that enrich members’ lives and support their goals through programs and services provided through our five Gateways: Health, Family, Wisdom, Purposeful Travel and Foundation. Outside the Gateways, L3 provides general membership retreats, local gatherings and other member-driven activities. L3 helps members act upon their shared sense of purpose; L3 creates an environment where they can learn from each other and build upon their passion for personal growth; L3 improves the effectiveness of their desire to give back to make a difference in their world. Congratulations! You Have Successfully Sponsored a New Member. Now What?

When your sponsored member has been reviewed and accepted into L3, you will be the first to know, and the first to pass along the good news. You’ve done your job…but the new member may still have questions, or want to jump in and get involved right away. To make sure new members are able to make the most of their participation, a group of active L3 members have come together to be Peer Advisors. They call new members in their region, walk them through the Gateways and benefits, familiarize them with the resources on the website, and make themselves available for phone calls. John Hunt, who co-chairs Peer Advisors with spouse Susan, explains that he came into L3 involved from the very start. "Dear friends introduced us to the organization," he says, "so we understood the organization even before we began the membership process. Then, soon after joining we attended the inaugural retreat in Mexico, where we met and became friends with many L3 members and gained an excellent understanding of the goals, future direction, and philosophy of the organization." Later, bringing other friends into the membership process, John and Susan realized they might not have the same immediate opportunity to immerse themselves in the L3 spirit of friendship, connectedness and purpose. Realizing that without such contact, new members might not get involved, the Hunts simply started reaching out to new members in their area, who appreciated the contact so much that the practice evolved into the more organized Peer Advisors program. If you’d like to be involved in this effort (advisors are needed for Middle Atlantic, Southwest, and Mid-America) contact cochairs John and Susan Hunt of Concord, Massachusetts. Thanks to all the Peer Advisors who have signed up so far! Tip: The Member Directory can be sorted by city or state, as well as by name, so it's easy to find members from your area. For Fun: Why You Might Like You Tube After All

Most of us really don’t have time to spend clicking on random videos in hopes that something interesting might turn up. Yet this vast, sprawling compendium of what the world is thinking about does have rewards if you know where to look. For example, the musicians among us might appreciate the way one Israeli composer uses the materials available on the web to create something new, imaginative and exciting. Kutiman has many of these compositions (“mashups,” but so much more) available, but his “Mother of All Funk Chords”is a fun place to start. Do you have a favorite You Tube video? Please share—send an email, or post it in “the conversation” on your dashboard.
