Call for Papers The Office of Research and Creative Scholarship at Andrews University is pleased to announce the Call for Papers for the Third Annual Andrews Research Conference. The theme is "Early Career Researchers and Creative Scholars in the Arts and Humanities." The conference will be held at Andrews University from May 4-8, 2016. Conference sponsors include the North American Division Office of Strategic Planning and Assessment and the General Conference Office of Archives, Statistics, and Research. All Adventist graduate students, post-docs and early career faculty- as well as advanced undergraduate students and recent graduates- in the Arts and Humanities disciplines are welcome. This includes English, History, Political Science, International Languages, Music, and Visual Arts. We are particularly interested in Adventist participants from non-Adventist Universities. Humanities scholars will give a 20-minute oral presentation on their research. Creative writers will give a 30 minute presentation that includes a 10minute scholarly presentation on their work accompanied by a reading of their original material. Musical artists will give a 30-minute lecture recital that includes a 10-minute scholarly oral presentation on the piece(s) they will perform. Visual Artists (Film, Fine Art, Photography, Design) will give a 20-minute scholarly oral presentation on their artwork and have the opportunity to participate in an exhibition (if applicable). Filmmakers who plan to show part of or all of an original film during their presentation may be given extra time as necessary. See “Submission Requirements” for more information. The conference itself will be free for all students, recent graduates, postdocs, and early career faculty. Conference meals, double-occupancy lodging, and conference excursions are provided as part of the conference registration. Senior faculty at Adventist institutions pay a small registration fee of $75 to help defray the cost. Participants will need to provide their own transportation to Andrews University. About ARC The Andrews Research Conference is organized by the Office of Research and Creative Scholarship at Andrews University. The purpose of the conference is to provide Adventist graduate students, post-docs and early career faculty with the opportunity to share their research and creative scholarship with one another and with Andrews University.
Presenters Seventh-day Adventist faculty, post-doctoral, graduate students, recent graduates, and advanced undergraduate students (with significant research or creative experience).
Submission Deadline The submission deadline is February 1, 2016. Abstracts and additional materials should be submitted on Digital Commons (see instructions below). The submissions will be reviewed by the Program Committee with notification of acceptance given by the end of February.
Submission Requirements Please submit your abstract through Digital Commons following the instructions below. Email
[email protected] if you have any questions. 1. Go to http://digitalcommons.andrews.edu/arc/. Click “Submit Abstract” (bottom of sidebar on left-hand side). If you clicked on a link that takes you directly to a login page, you can skip this step. 2. Log in or create new account (the account is free). 3. Read the submission instructions and click “Accept.” 4. Enter your information into the form on the screen. a. Please be sure to indicate co-authors (if applicable) and their institution under Presenter Information. b. Indicate your title and department under “Presenter Status” along with the title and department of any co-authors. c. Indicate under “Session Type” if you plan to give one of the following types of presentations: 1) exhibition, 2) oral presentation, or 3) lecture recital. i. Creative Writing: If you plan to give a reading of your creative work, please note that you are expected to spend 10 minutes of your oral presentation on the scholarly aspects of your work. ii. Visual Artists: If you plan to participate in the exhibition you are expected to give a 20-minute scholarly presentation on your work. iii. Musical Artists: If you plan to give a lecture recital you are expected to give a 10-minute scholarly presentation on the piece(s) in addition to a 20-minute performance. d. Select the discipline(s) that best fits your presentation topic. e. Format your abstract text in Microsoft Word and enter it in the “Abstract” box. An abstract is required for all session types. f. Under “Acknowledgments” list any sources of funding or research scholarships/assistantships received by the authors for this work. 5. If you choose to do so, you may upload your paper and/or powerpoint as a pdf. This allows your material to appear on Digital Commons. 6. If you are submitting an oral presentation application for creative writing, please upload an electronic copy of the piece(s) you intend to present using the “additional files” option. If you do not want your piece(s) to appear on Digital Commons, do not check the box under the “Agree to have additional materials posted” section. 7. If you are submitting artwork for the exhibition, please upload a pdf or jpg using the “additional files” option. If you do not want your artwork to appear on Digital Commons, do not check the box under the “Agree to have additional materials posted” section. 8. If your presentation will include an original film, please include a link to the film you intend to show. If you do not want your film to appear on Digital Commons, do not check the box under the “Agree to have additional materials posted” section. 9. If you are submitting a lecture recital application, please include a link to a video recording of the piece(s) you intend to play. This will be removed prior to the posting of abstracts. 10. Submit the event. 11. The Program Committee will review your submission and notify you of your acceptance by the end of February. Once you have been accepted, your abstract information will be posted to Digital Commons.
