Regional Commissioner’s Report It is now the beginning of the new Scouting year. Make sure the Region GAS (Gathering of all Sections) at Glenrock is a must do, on your Groups “bucket” list for 2017. There is no doubt about it, the Groups that operate as a Group i.e. all sections, supporters etc., are the most successful Groups. Plan to bring your entire Group to this event. Deputy Regional Commissioner, Kevin Allen and his team are working hard to ensure this event as always, is a fun time for all. The date is 21st & 22nd October. Keep your ‘eye out’ for the E1’s and more details shortly. I was speaking to a close friend from the SC&T Region. He is a long-time leader, 50 years or near enough and he was telling me with pride he had recruited 12 more new youth members plus almost certainly several new leaders this year. That’s right – since the beginning of February! This person is a LIC of a group. I talk to this leader on a very regular basis and the topic of development of Scouting gets discussed almost every time, so I was not expecting anything scientific or profound to the obvious question “how did you recruit these youth etc.” I sure suspected it would have to do with effort, time, leadership and follow up and of course performance once they arrived and of course I was right. This man had a school promotion at the local school, followed up by an open night; plenty of phone calls – yes – phone calls my friends, no emails and it’s all happening. This man has used this same methodology previously and has not missed in recruiting youth and l know what you’re thinking, did he get new leaders? Of course he did. Our Region has been for 12 years plus, leaders in school promotions. In fact we were the first to “do it” under firstly Des Hocking and then Peter Griffiths. Our Region has produced a DVD to even show Groups not only how to do a school promotion but how to organise it but we still don’t seem to do anywhere enough of them. In fact I know we don’t. I know I am going to be told not everyone has a “flair” for doing a school promotion and secondly, it’s in the day and nobody can get time off work. The school promotion is a maximum of 2 -3 hours and probably once a year is enough. Certainly do as many as you like. Whilst I accept sincerely there are very genuine reasons why some people either it’s not their cup of tea or have difficulty having time off work, I must be honest and say I find it very hard to believe there is not ‘someone’ in the Group to perform the very occasional school promotion in a calendar year. We need to fish where the fish are and my close mate from SC&T does it brilliantly. Every time he wants more youth and leaders off to the school he goes. By my quick calculations there are 190 normal school days in NSW. Surely your Group can make the effort to do at least one out of 190? Don’t forget to have a look at the Peter Griffiths’ How to do a School Promotion material. I know some Schools can be challenging to visit due to varying principals but bi-enlarge the school promotion follow up by a dynamic open night and subsequent quality leadership and programs is a certainty to be successful. Like anything though, it’s also hard work but my simple philosophy is I want more people in the community to enjoy the benefits of Scouting. I hope it’s yours as well. The benefits like any other good product must be sold. Thanks for all the work you are doing and best of luck for the 2017-18 Scouting year.

Training Report A Quote from our Founder:- “Success in training the boy depends largely on the Scoutmaster’s own personal example. Robert Baden-Powell, To bring this into current times:- “Success in training the youth depends largely on the leaders own personal example”. So when was the last time you upskilled?. A great place to start is the new modules on Navigation Basic Outdoor Skills (BOS) (previously Bushwalking skills Level 1) - has 5 new modules: • Plan and Guide Outdoor Activities • Minimal Environmental Impact Practices • Interpreting Weather • Group Facilitation • Responding to Emergencies And a workbook to be downloaded

Joey Scouts Report Wow, there is so much going on at the moment it’s for the Joey Section in Hunter and Coastal Region that it’s not funny.

Big Day Out Big Day Out is happening tomorrow the 2nd of April, Hopefully everyone now has there paperwork and forms into signed and ready to hand to registration tomorrow. The Day is set to be action packed and it sure to get many great reactions from your Joeys. We will be hopping around Honeysuckle, Newcastle Museum and the Maritime Centre and being mesmerised by the wonders of science with “The Science of Slime” presented by Newcastle Museums educational team. Photos will be released of the event on the Region Joey Facebook Page, www.facebook.com.au/hcjoeys so be sure to stay tuned for updates to the site after the event.

State Konara State Konara is coming up on the 27th / 28th of May the Weekend is being held at Glenfield Scout Camp in Hume Region. This is a weekend for Joey Leaders to further their professional development as Joey Scout Leaders, this being said the event is Open to anyone who would like to attend. Registrations are now open via https://events.greaterwestscouts.com.au/event/52 The Cost of the Weekend is $130 until the 29th of April and $150 until Wednesday the 10th of May, so may sure you get in early to keep your treasurers happy. Groups should be covering the cost of this weekend as it is training for the Joey Section. If Your Group is considering opening a Joey Mob, this could be a great weekend for you so send me an email or give me a call and we can have a chat.

Joey Leader News Hopefully everyone reading this article that is a Joey leader, assistant Joey Leader or Trainee Joey Leader has now received the first Joey Leader News. Joey Leader news is a communication tool that we will be using to get directly in touch with each and every Joey leader, directly to their inbox. The region Joey team has identified a gap in communication; with just over half of the districts in the region have a District Joey Leader. The Joey Leader News will be a sequential news stream so you will know if you have missed an issue and it will keep you updated in real time when information comes to light. The emails will be short to the point and contain the facts with no fluff. They will complement the monthly bulletin articles by providing updates that often can’t wait a month. If you have NOT received a copy of Joey Leader News and would like to subscribe to all the email updates then at the bottom of the Joeys page on Scout reach there is a signup form where you can add your details.

5 Year Old Joeys No Mobs are to have any 5 year old Joeys yet. On or after a child’s 6th Birthday they can start to be invested. The Chief Commissioner is looking into trialling 5 year olds but this has not come in as yet so no Mobs should have 5 year olds. Selected Mobs will be advised when this trialling is to take place.

Joey Scouts Report, continues Core Sectional Skills Please save the Date on Sunday the 27th of August as we will be holding a locally based skills development day. The day will focus on the practical skills of Joeys with a particular focus on Map and Compass for Joey Scouts, as well as knotting for Joey Scouts. We hope to teach some numerous skills and activities on this day that you can take home to your mobs.

Commissioner’s Challenge If anyone is still working on the Commissioner’s Challenge badge now is a good time to get them all submitted with only a few months left in the challenge. Speak to your District Joey Scout Leader (DJSL) if you need more information.

Campfire Month The State Joey Council (SJC) has decided that August is the NSW campfire month. During this month we would love to see all the Mobs out and about participating in a campfire or running one. Talk to your DJSL about whether your District will have one big Campfire or weather you will be doing it as individual mobs.

Promise Challenges Firstly Congratulations to the latest round of promise challenge recipients. Sadly however, Promise Challenge’s aren’t being completed by as many mobs as they should be. If you don’t know how to raise the topic of a promise challenge or just need a resource to give to the Joey then look to the Joey resources page on the region website for inspiration. We will soon (mid-April) have a refreshed set of resources that will guide both the parents and Joeys through the process so that the Joeys can get the most out of the award and remove any headaches the leader my encounter.

New Joey Mobs Is your group interested in starting the Joey section? If so get in touch and we can have a chat about getting a plan done to make it happen.

Cub Scouts Report Firstly I’d like to thank David and Michelle for all their commitment and work they have done in all the years as Regional Cub Commissioner. You’ve left very big shoes to fill. I am hoping to get around to your Seeonee’s so I can get to meet everyone. At Cuboree, I went around to the Packs and was appreciative of the reception I received from the Leaders, Helpers and Cubs. It was interesting listening to some of the issues which I hope to deal with prior to next Cuboree. I was most impressed with the interaction between Leaders and youth members, everyone did a sensational job.

Leaders Programming Day We are running a Leaders Programming Day. This will be presented at 4 locations throughout the Region. The day is aimed at getting Leaders to interact with other Leaders within the Region, as at present there is virtually no networking happening. Networking will allow you to see how other Groups run, gain ideas, organise inter-group camps and make great friendships. The dates and venues are as follows; • Sunday 30th April 2017 – Jubilee Scout Hall, Maitland • Saturday 6th May 2017 – Charlestown Scout Hall • Sunday 7th May 2017 – Hall to be advised • Saturday 13th May 2017 – Ourimbah Scout Hall If you can’t make the one in your District, please attend another. The course is open to Cub Leaders , Assistants and Trainee Leaders. The program includes a Disability Section which will be very handy when dealing with Cubs with certain needs. We need to get 100% attendance.

Cub Fun Day On May 21st, we have our fun day at Maitland Park, you should have already received E1’s. It’ll be a great day with heaps of activities for the Cubs to enjoy and the Leaders and family’s to have lots of laughs. Unfortunately due to high cost of hiring fees etc, we have to charge a small amount for attendees. Hopefully we won’t be fogged in like last year. I am looking forward to the year ahead. Keep smiling,

Jeanine Bond Regional Commissioner (Cub Scouts) [email protected]

Scouts Report Regional Scout Rally 2017 All the information leaders need is available on the Rally page on the ‘scoutreach’ website. The rally is on the weekend of 27th & 28th May at our Myuna Bay Scout Camp site. Each district will run a base in areas adjacent to the Scout Camp. Scouts will camp overnight on the Camp common next to Rally HQ, where there will be toilets, first-aid, security lighting and cooking areas. Starting point for scouts on Saturday morning is the Myuna Rest Area on Wangi Rd, & closing parade will be at the camp entrance car park on Sunday afternoon, off Rocky Point Rd, Eraring.

Patrol & Leader/Rover/Venturer/Helper applications for Rally close on 7th May at the Region Office. Scout E1’s must be attached to their Patrol Registration form, and Leaders forms attached to the Leader Registration form, together with a group cheque to Scouts Australia. Leaders are to ensure that each PL & APL is given a copy of the PL letter, and the Rally Map is distributed to parents. Every scout, whether attending Rally or not, will benefit from your Rally preparation programs. How to pack a back-pack, what to take on a lightweight hike, what type of hike tent to use & how to pack it, menu’s & what to cook at region rally, what to wear whilst hiking, what to take if it’s cold or rainy, the list goes on & on. Its basic Scout stuff to include in your nightly program leading up to rally.

The Troop Council Iv’e had lots of feedback about the Troop Council info in the last Bulletin. Most leaders are concerned about the direction of their troop councils. My advice is for leaders to ensure they are discussing how the Troop Council works for their troop, whether small or large. You’ll be surprised on how many great ideas come out of their meetings. The main thing is that your Troop Council must be the Decision making body of the Troop, • Drives the Program • Deals with the issues • Troop Councils should meet regularly. Delegates from your troop council go to a District SYC to pass on feedback from your troop council. Remember Scouting is: ‘Youth leading & Adult supporting’. The next Region SYC meeting will be held at the Region Rally on 27th May.

Advanced Leadership Course The next Advanced Scout Leadership Course is being held in our Region on Wednesday 5th & Thursday 6th July, during the mid-year school holidays. Applications will be on the ‘Patroltent’ website in May.

Scouts Report, continues ANZAC 2017 Camp For Scouts that are attending this great Camp over the Anzac weekend, from Saturday 22nd April to Tuesday 25th April, at Fort Scratchley, I’m sure you’ll have a great time.. This camp is the first of its type for our region, and is really great value for money, with scouts receiving a Camp polo shirt, Hoody, and a commemorative SWAG to sleep in. The activities planned for the camp look fantastic, with a special tour of HMAS Newcastle, a visit to Williamtown RAAF Base & Fighter World, the Anzac Walk, and lighting of the flame at Nobby’s Beach, & being next to the Guns as they are fired at the Fort.

General Information Make sure you and your Scouts are checking our websites:• patroltent.com • scoutreach.org.au If you do need to contact me, after speaking to your DSL, please email me at: [email protected] Keep up the great work you are all doing for your Scouts.

3 Plus Challenge This year we have a new strategy to encourage groups to grow their group by three members. It doesn’t sound like much does it? But three in every group equates to around 210 new members in the Region! So, starting from 15th April 2017 until 15th April 2018 if your group grows by three (this can be youth or leaders – not adult helpers) then each member of your group will receive a special badge designed specifically for this initiative which can be worn on their uniform. Those groups who grow by more than three members within this period will receive a slightly different badge with a distinctive gold border. Obviously if you don’t lose members then it will be easier to grow by three. The more you lose the more you have to gain to reach the 3 plus. Starting numbers will be published in the May Bulletin So the challenge is set! Are you up to it? www.scoutreach.org.au

‘Here, then, lies the most important aim in the Scout training- to educate; not to instruct, mind you, but to educate, that is, to draw out the youth to learn for themselves, of their own desire, the things that tend to build up character in them.’Lord Baden- Powell

As some courses have limited numbers please complete and send your E1 forms and money to the region office as soon as possible. In addition to all the above courses the venturers and leaders have access to the exciting courses being run by the activities team. Could all leaders see that the units have access to the activities calendar that can be found on the region website so the units can add the courses to their programs.

Admin I can confirm that as of now the State office is resigning Venturers from the system as soon as they turn 18 years of age. This has already started so any Venturers over the age of 18 years of age (excluding the Cooks Hill Venturer Unit) have been resigned from the system unless they had transferred to another section eg Rovers. If you are unsure ask your GL or LIC to check the status of the member on Scoutlink. Also noted is that some Scouts that have linked to Venturers have remained on Scoutlink as a Scout. Could all VSL’s have their GL or LIC check that your current Venturers are correctly listed as Venturers on Scoutlink.

Estimating the Width of a River

Here is a handy estimating method for Golfers and for groups setting out to erect pioneering structures. 1. Start by standing on the side of the river and locating an object on the opposite side (A).

2. Place a stick in the ground directly opposite of the object on the side of the river you are currently on (B). 3. Turn 90 degrees and walk approximately 20 steps (10 paces) and place a stick at where you end. (C) While the image below shows 50 paces certain circumstances may not allow you to take 50 paces. 4. Continue walking in the same direction taking the same number of paces and place a stick at where you end (D). 5. Turn another 90 degrees (your back should be towards the river) and walk until you can draw a straight line from object A through stick C and ending at your location (E). (A-C-E). 6. Measure the distance between your current location and stick D to determine the width of the object.
