Volunteer Appreciation A SPECIAL THANK YOU TO THE BOARD OF COMMUNITY FUTURES EAST PARKLAND FOR THEIR DEDICATION TO…

Growing communities one idea at a time. The East Parkland staff, along with all the clients and communities that have been assisted over the years, would like to express appreciation to the Board of Directors of Community Futures East Parkland for volunteering their time and expertise toward the economic and business development of the East Parkland region. Sponsored by:

Community Futures is a federally funded not-for-profit organization. Born in response to the economic downturn of the mid-1980s, the Federal Government took a bold leap by placing in the hands of community volunteers, the responsibility for how government dollars would be distributed locally through Community Futures corporations (CFs). CFs provides local solutions through volunteer leadership, commitment to economic development at a grassroots level, and have survived several changes in government due to the strength and necessity of the program. Community Futures East Parkland is based out of Mirror, Alberta and has been assisting communities and business owners since 1988. Our region extends to Millet in the north, Castor in the east, Elnora to the south, and Alder Flats to the west. We believe that when times get tough our services are more important than ever. We are focused on the needs of our clients, our local businesses, and our region’s economy. It is our mission to provide business advice, business training, assist business as an alternative lender, and assist community-based economic development projects.

HANS SPELT, Chair Town & County of Lacombe

BOB WILLIS, Vice-Chair Town & County of Stettler

Our goal is to encourage local entrepreneurship and community economic development. All our lending decisions are made right here where we live, by volunteers with diverse backgrounds, skill sets and perspectives— ranging from small business owners, former clients, and municipal councilors. The East Parkland region is arbitrarily subdivided into areas from where a volunteer representative comes to the Board table to provide insight into the communities they represent, but more importantly, to work with other Board Members to direct resources and activities to benefit the entire East Parkland region. The Board does not discriminated against gender or age, and welcomes interested individuals for their diverse perspectives. The Board encourages the selection of individuals with a business background, along with community awareness and involvement. Any elected officials who sit on the Board do so as volunteers rather than municipal appointees. If anyone is interested in joining the East Parkland Board, they are invited to submit a resume for consideration. For further information on the CF Program and the services provided by East Parkland, please view our website at eastparkland.albertacf.com, contact us at 403-788-2212, or visit us at 5020-50 Ave in Mirror.

FROM THE EDITOR’S COMPUTER There's a story about precocious young girl who was enthusiastically running up and down an aisle somewhere. Her exasperated mother finally made her sit down and behave. The girl sits down and says, "I may be sitting, but inside I'm still running." Are you outwardly acting in a certain manner while inside you wish you were doing or being something else? Are you doing something outwardly to conform to someone else's plans while inside you are dreaming and doing something that is meaningful only to you? Are you outwardly projecting a certain image in order to fit in somewhere while inside you are the total opposite of that image? Is it possible for you to bring the inner you out into the open so you can live more authentically and true to your own nature?

Lignite: Coal Mining Along the Red Deer River From: “Lignite” by Fern Ralston Lignite derived its name from the type of coal mined on the Red Deer River. In 1910 Western Townsite Investment Company Limited of Wetaskiwin bought Russell Larkin’s homestead the NW ¼ Sec.32 Township 38 Range 23 W4 and surveyed it into lots. Great things were expected for this townsite, as the Grand Trunk Railway was going through, the bridge across the river was under construction, there were unknown quantities of coal along the river, and last but not least there were rumors that the round house would be built there….

Parent Excessively ENVIRONMENTAL Speeding with Four Young ALMANAC Children By Bud Bargholz

The Chautauqua A7

Featuring Alix & District Chamber of Commerce Member...

Shortly before noon, 13th, 2013, a member of the AirAlix Saturday WeatherApril for January 2013 drie Integrated Traffic Unit was conducting speed enforcement on Highway 566, just east of the CrossIron Mills Mall. The driving conditions were poor due to the fact a heavy fog had greatly reduced visibility, and with a light rain/snow falling the road surface had become wet and slippery. The officer observed a black Mercedes SUV traveling West bound at a high rate of speed and obtained a radar speed reading of 152km/h in the maximum 100km/h zone. Upon approaching the vehicle, the officer was shocked to discover that the vehicle was occupied by two parents and four young children between the ages of 4 and 11 years. Three of the children were theirs and the fourth was a visiting friend. This could easily have become a very tragic situation. Traveling at a speed even just a few kilometers per hour over the posted speed limit: • Increases the probability of death or injury if your vehicle is involved in a crash • Reduces your ability to steer safely around objects on the roadway • Decreases your field of vision and your peripheral vision • Extends the distance required to stop your vehicle in emergency situations • Reduces your ability to obey traffic control devices such as red lights, stop signs, yield signs and crosswalks • Increases the risk that you will lose control of your vehicle • Reduces the effectiveness of roadside safety devices such as barriers, crash cushions, and guardrails

Become an Alix & District Chamber member today! Contact: Beth Richardson 403-352-3837 or email [email protected] Going local…means nurturing locally owned businesses which use local resources sustainably, employ local workers at decent wages and serve primarily local consumers...Control moves… back into the community where it belongs. - Michael H. Shuman

The driver, the father of three of the children, a 37 year old male from Strathmore, Alberta has been charged with speeding. Speeds of 50 km/h or more over the speed limit, result in a mandatory court appearance.

Thank you for all the support and we will beat this disease.

Letter to the Editor Recently, I put two posters up on the Community Kiosk that is provided by the Alix Lion's Club near the post office. The next day, both posters were removed! I did happen to have another poster available, so I put it up. Again it was removed in short order. So, I checked with the Village office, and a Lion's Club member to see what criteria there was for posting on this board and discovered that someone was keeping this board neat and orderly. So I called this good Samaritan to see what he might know about my disappearing posters. He believes that there is someone taking down anything that they deem not from Alix! So, the fundraising campaign by the Lacombe Hospital Auxiliary with a Bakeless Bakesale, to raise funds for necessary hospital equipment, was found to be not appropriate by this community censor! I guess no one in Alix ever utilizes the Lacombe Hospital and so would not appreciate having the best of equipment during their stay.... The second poster was an invitation to anyone in this community to attend a free Palliative Care Society Dinner with a well known speaker presenting information, to assist people in communicating with family and friends who suffer a terminal illness. This society provides an education opportunity annually to anyone wishing to attend! How sad that we have someone in our community who seems to hold such a narrow view of what our community needs. I would appreciate an opportunity to have a conversation with this person, so that perhaps in the future we can decide for ourselves, what we want to support. It Pays to Advertise A lion met a tiger as they drank beside a pool Said the tiger, “Tell me why you’re always roaring like a fool?” “That’s not foolish,” said the lion with a twinkle in his eye. “They call me King of all the beasts, it pays to advertise!” A rabbit heard them talking and ran home like a streak, He thought he’d try the lion’s plan, but all he did was squeak! A fox came to investigate and had dinner in the woods – The Moral is “Never advertise unless you’ve got the goods!” - Rulon Hillam

Will You Follow?

Coming Events - Bashaw

by Rev. Robin King The last two verses of chapter 20 of the Gospel of John sure sound like an ending to me. "Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book. But these are written so that you may come to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that through believing you may have life in his name." Chapter 20 includes the story of the empty tomb, the appearance of Jesus to the disciples and the story of Thomas, the one who doubted. In the middle of this chapter is a commissioning scene: "'As the Father has sent me, so I send you.' When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, 'Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.'" Like I said, it sure seems like an ending. But it's not. There's a chapter 21. Sure, there's debate about how it was added and who might have added it, but it's there and it seems to be there in the oldest sources. I don't have an answer for that debate - any more than anyone else has anything really conclusive, I don't suppose - but I like this chapter 21 and I'll tell you why. Jesus gathered ordinary people to be his closest followers. And for awhile they followed and learned and experienced life with Jesus. Then it all came to an end. When Jesus was arrested, one of them even denied knowing him. The others all hid in fear. When he died, they didn't really know what to do. And then he was there again with them. Even reappearing for the one who was missing the first time, in order to prove it was really him. He was there! Amazing! Incredible! A fulfillment of what he had foretold, proof that he was who he had said he was! And then he breathes the Spirit into them and tells them he is sending them into the world, just as God sent him to us! Fantastic! And then what do the disciples do next? They go fishing. Say what? In chapter 21, the six of them who had been fishermen went fishing. They went back to their everyday, ordinary former lives. Like, the show's over, we're done with that. It was great while it lasted - well, mostly, except that last bit with the death and everything - but Jesus is gone now, so let's all get back to where we were. It's over now. So Jesus appears again and says "follow me." There's no going back to ordinariness now, there's no going back to the way things were as if nothing has changed. Everything has changed. And it's not over. "Follow me." Makes me wonder if that isn't how we should end every Sunday morning church service. Well, every church service, every church meeting, every church gathering, every "church." Period. Isn't the whole point of church to be remembering that it's not over? If we go to church for an hour, enjoy the show (or at least tolerate it) and leave God behind as we leave the building, how are we accomplishing what Jesus teaches us? Church is just the beginning, too. It can't just be inspiring or refreshing, entertaining or momentarily meaningful, it must also be demanding. In the same way that Jesus demands it of the disciples, Jesus demands it of us: it's not over, it's just beginning. Follow me.

And that means it will soon be time to have our TOWN-WIDE CLEANUP Mark this date on your calendars - Monday, May 6, 6:30 pm at the Public Works Shop. Friends of the Library will be supporting the 4H club with their Highway clean-up in May. It was decided at our Friends meeting that we would once again help out with the Red Serge Ball this year as this has proven to be a wonderful fundraiser for us. If you are available to help out with this event, please be sure to let us know as there are a number of opportunities to help with set-up and canvassing. Any businesses that would like to contribute items for the silent auction are encouraged to contact the Library for further information, as a portion of the proceeds raised is given to the Library. Your continued support is appreciated. The Village will be rebuilding one of our playgrounds this year. We are looking for a group of parents and children to form a committee to decide which playground will be replaced and what equipment will be installed. The group will be supplied with a budget and will be responsible for reporting their decisions and progress to Council. The Chautauqua A27 She also says that her brother “loves music and French-fries, and he naps on a couch.” Ms. Kaye-Stanisky says that her brother is now 61 years old, and that he feels safe in his home in the Michener. She says that “If anyone thinks that Floyd can live in a group home in the ‘community,’ they are sadly mistaken.” She thinks “some residents in Michener may be fine in group homes, but many will end up in Alberta Hospital or in long-term care facilities already stressed past their limits of what any advocate of vulnerable people would consider acceptable care. Floyd will be one of those people.” The building known today as the Michener Centre was built as a priCan you Spot theinDifferences? on page vate girls’ school 1913 by the Answers Presbyterian Synod,A31... but the school moved to Edmonton. In 1918, the Provincial Government purchased the building for the education of young ladies. The facility, in 1923, began to care for mentally handicapped people, with a total of 108 residents. It was called the Provincial Training School. Following World War One, the facility was used for veterans suffering from nervous disorders. By 1983, the Michener Centre was a 66-building complex located on 360 acres of land. It was once separated from Red Deer by open fields and fences, but the City of Red Deer expanded to the Centre.

The Michener Centre

One of the Centre’s more honoured visitors was the very-popular former Governor-General, The Right Honourable Roland Michener, after whom the Centre was named in 1977.

By Graham L. Harle

Mr. Michener was born in Lacombe, but was raised about 7 miles out of Red Deer, thus not far from the Michener Centre.

Have you ever heard of the Michener Centre? It is located in Red Deer, Alberta, and it provides homes and living quarters for individuals who cannot live with their families because of their disabilities.

In January of this year, the Provincial Deputy Minister, Steve MacDonald, went to the Michener Centre and toured the facility and visited four of the homes at the Centre.

I became aware of the Michener Centre when my wife and I moved to Stettler, Alberta in 1995.

On March 11, 2013, an Alberta Government news release said: “The needs and well-being of the people who live at Michener will be” the top concern of the government.

On more than one occasion, I was asked by parents in the Stettler area to help a family move a member of the family to the Michener Centre. On March 18, 2013, the Edmonton Journal carried a story about the Michener Centre by a Dave Cooper, as the Alberta Government has decided to close the Michener Centre. Dave Cooper’s article is about a family who has a member at the Centre. He writes that a “Lisa Kaye-Stanisky is seeking public support to convince the province to reverse its recent decision to close the Michener Centre in Red Deer, currently home to about 125 disabled residents.” Ms. Kaye-Stanisky’s brother, Floyd, has been a resident at the Michener Centre for 56 years – he was diagnosed as being severely mentally defective when he was five years old. Lisa Kaye-Stanisky apparently did not know she had a brother until she was in her early twenties, as her father did not talk about her brother. She finally met her brother when she was in her thirties, and he was straitjacketed and he wore a helmet. Her brother is not verbal; he is blind, mostly deaf, and he suffers from a myriad of health problems. He was weaned off his straitjacket “thanks to many dedicated staff at the Michener.”

As “today, tens of thousands of Albertans with developmental disabilities grow up at home, are included in schools, participate in community recreation, enjoy friendships, and move into adulthood,” the closure of the Michener is inevitable. Obviously, parents of children who are in the Michener Centre today are concerned.

When people are free to do as they please, they usually imitate each other. – Eric Hoffer

What’s In A Name? by Brenda Barritt

Camp Promotes Entrepreneurial Spirit in Youth!

Last year Vance decided that we couldn't name any of our animals that we would be butchering. Any mothers and fathers could be named, but if someone was going to be eating the animal in the near future – if they were given a name, it had to be obvious as to what the animal's purpose was: Mr. Steak, Ham-let, etc. He was worried that potential customers wouldn't be comfortable with knowing their dinner had a name.

The Alberta Youth Entrepreneurship Camp (AYEC) will be celebrating 17 years of youth entrepreneurial spirit in Southern Alberta in 2013. Applications are now being accepted for the 2013 AYEC and if you are a youth aged 13-15 and have an interest in business then this is the perfect camp for you! Youth will compete in an essay competition, which will allow them to attend the camp for FREE, thanks to the generous support of the camps community sponsors. Sixty youth from South and Central Alberta will attend the camp running August 18th to the 24th, being held once again at Eagles Nest Ranch in Cypress Hills, Alberta.

Then we came to this year, and realized that we needed to improve our system of tagging and tracking our cattle. Our herd consists of cows we bought from Vance's father and a small herd bought from a fellow near Edmonton. Then our calves last year were tagged with some leftover tags so some of the numbers make sense in terms of lineage – and some, not so much. In addition, I am not one for remembering numbers. I am good at math, but holding numbers in my brain longer than I need them has never been my strength. I need a pen and paper, or a computer. Which brought us back to the idea of giving our animals, especially the cows, names.

This one week entrepreneurial-based camp combines the education of business training with a summer camp atmosphere. Campers hear from guest speakers and participate in workshops to learn the components of a business plan such as marketing, advertising, cash flow and record keeping. Youth are put into business teams where they plan a business idea, meet with suppliers and bankers, build a product or a service and on the final day of camp these youthful business ventures are open for business. Campers pay back their business loans and split their profits amongst their business team.

Names seem easier to remember, they indicate male or female by looking at the tag, and we can use the lettering system that is 'standard' – just starting each name from this year with that letter.

It’s not only about numbers and business plans though. These youth get to participate in a variety of summer camp experiences and recreational activities. Zipline, horseback riding, wall climbing, mountain biking and swimming are just a few examples of activities the youth get involved in.

Which had us rethinking last year's rule. We invite our customers out to the farm in order to see what we are doing, how we raised the animals, and to feel that their purchase is an investment in us. What we have realized is that our customers come to us because they trust the way we raise our animals and thus, their food. We aren't making them pets or forgetting that they aren't human. We never forget the reason we raise them is to produce nourishing food for our community while also building a healthy ecosystem on our land. Yet, using names for our animals acknowledges that they are living beings to be respected and treated well. With 'A' being the letter most farmers will use to mark calves born in 2013, we have now welcomed Alla, Anna, Aly, and Abe to the herd. Luckily we also have a small herd, however when we get to letters like E and K, we may need to run a contest in the newspaper or among our customers to get some help. ______________________________________________________

Youth that are interested in more information or applying to the camp can contact Community Futures East Parkland at 403-788-2212. Also, youth are encouraged to visit the website at www.ayec.ca and the Alberta Youth Entrepreneurship Camp Facebook page! Application forms can be picked up from our Office in Mirror or from the website. Application Deadline is June 1 but you are encouraged to apply early, so pick up yours today! The Alberta Youth Entrepreneurship Camp is made possible by the generous donations of, Alberta Human Services, the Alberta Lottery Fund and partnering Community Futures offices in South and Central Alberta.

"Dogs Welcome" Author Unknown A man wrote a letter to a small hotel he planned to visit on his vacation. He wrote: "I would very much like to bring my dog with me. He is well-groomed and very well behaved. Would you be willing to permit me to keep him in my room with me at night?" An immediate reply came from the hotel owner, who wrote: Sir: "I've been operating this hotel for many years. In all that time, I've never had a dog steal towels, bedclothes, silverware, or pictures off the walls. I've never had to evict a dog in the middle of the night for being drunk and disorderly. And I've never had a dog run out on a hotel bill. Yes, indeed, your dog is welcome at my hotel. And, if your dog will vouch for you, you're welcome to stay here, too."

BLAINE CALKINS M.P., WETASKIWIN Blaine Calkins welcomes the new First Nations Financial Transparency Act Blaine Calkins, Member of Parliament for Wetaskiwin, is more than encouraged with the passing of The First Nations Financial Transparency Act which received Royal Assent on March 27, 2013. “Our government has responded to First Nations communities.” said MP Calkins. “These new measures will help deliver a more effective and accountable leadership for our First Nations communities.” The Government of Canada believes First Nations, as do all Canadians, deserve accountability and transparency from their elected officials. Currently, First Nations governments operating under the Indian Act are the only level of government in Canada that are not obligated to make basic financial information public. This Act will ensure that community members have the access they need to the basic financial information such as audited financial statements, and the salaries and expenses of chief and council. In addition to passing the First Nations Financial Transparency Act we are providing $241 Million to help First Nations youth in Alberta and across Canada access the skills and training they need to participate in the large economic projects, like those found in the resource sector. Additionally, we are providing $10 million to grant scholarships and bursaries through Indspire to help First Nations and Inuit students in Alberta and across Canada attend Post Secondary institution. Our Government remains focused on our four priorities, as outlined by the Prime Minister that Canadians care most about: their families, the safety of our streets and communities, their pride in being a citizen of this country and their personal financial security. The Furniture Dealer Author Unknown Panko, a furniture dealer from Alberta, decided to expand the line of furniture in his store, so he decided to go to the big furniture show that was being held in Paris that year. At the show he selected a line that he thought would sell well back home. To celebrate, he decided to visit a bar and have a taste of French wine. The small place was quite crowded, and the other chair at his table was the only vacant seat in the house. Before long, a very beautiful Parisian woman came to his table; asked him something in French (which Panko couldn't understand) and then sat down. He tried to speak to her in English, but she did not speak his language. After a couple of minutes of trying to communicate with her, he took a napkin and drew a picture of a wine glass and showed it to her. She nodded, so he ordered a glass of wine for her too. After sitting together at the table for a while, he took another napkin, and drew a picture of a plate with food on it, and she nodded. They left the bar and found a quiet cafe that featured a small group playing romantic music. During dinner, he took another napkin and drew a picture of a couple dancing. She nodded, and they got up to dance. They danced until the cafe closed and the band was packing up. Before leaving the cafe, the young lady took a napkin and drew a picture of a four-poster bed. To this day, Panko has no idea how she figured out he was in the furniture business.

Spring is Here!! With the Easter season past and springtime looming, I thought it is a perfect time to share a positive political story with you! Don’t laugh - there is such a thing from time to time. My Wildrose colleagues and I were able to share details on a principled decision that we made a while back and I am thrilled to be part of it. Not long after the election, the PC dominated legislative committee voted to increase MLA pay by 8%. Yes, in an era when we’re asking everyone else to hold the line or take rollbacks, they voted themselves a raise! Well, we didn’t approve and didn’t vote to support it. In fact, we feel so strongly about this sending a wrong message to Albertans, we decided to do something about it. We have created the Wiildrose Caucus Foundation so we can give this money to charity. Every one of the 17 Wildrose MLA’s is donating the PC mandated pay hike to the foundation. I am proud to be part of a team that is putting our money where our mouth is. It’s too easy in politics to criticize and demand leadership while not showing it yourself. Our leader, Danielle Smith, summed it up like this: “Our caucus was united in our opposition to the MLA pay hike the PC’s brought in and we are united in deciding to do something about it. I am proud of every single Wildrose MLA for stepping and doing the right thing and I look forward to being able to help out hard working charities that do invaluable work for our communities.” It sure felt good to present that first cheque to a much deserved charity. We wrote our first cheque, in the amount of $25,000 to The Little Warriors Foundation. This charity directly supports children who have been victims of sexual abuse. The donation will go toward the creation of the Be Brave Ranch, a first of its kind long treatment facility for kids who have been sexually abused in Canada. Our hope is, that by donating the pay hike to charity, we can help those that make a difference in society, make more of a difference. It’s also our hope that MLA’s from all parties will follow our lead. Look for more positive announcements throughout the year from the Wildrose Caucus Foundation. As we move into spring....and here’s hoping we are now in for a nice long stretch of warm weather, I hope the rebirth of nature that happens each spring will bring about good things for all my constituents. To contact me at any time, please feel free to email: [email protected] or write #101 4892 46 Street, Lacombe,AB T4L 2B4 or phone 403 782 7725.

High Blood Pressure… Are You At Risk? Blood pressure is a measure of how hard the blood pushes against the artery walls as it moves to other parts of your body. It is normal for your blood pressure to get higher due to things like stress and activity; however, if your blood pressure stays high, you can have a condition called hypertension (high blood pressure). High blood pressure is often referred to as the “silent killer,” as you may go for many years without any symptoms. Most people don’t even know they have high blood pressure until they have their blood pressure checked by their health-care provider during a routine visit. When left untreated, high blood pressure can lead to heart attacks and strokes. Your blood pressure reading consists of two numbers: • Systolic (top number) – measures how hard the blood is pushed out of your heart when the heart is pumping • Diastolic (bottom number) – measures how hard the blood pushed out when your heart is relaxed and filling with blood You may hear someone refer to a blood pressure of 120 over 80 as the ideal blood pressure. This means the systolic pressure is 120 and the diastolic pressure is 80. High blood pressure is considered 140/90 or higher. This means your heart is working much harder to force blood to other parts of your body. Who is at risk? High blood pressure tends to affect adults more than children. It is more common in men; however, women are more at risk of developing high blood pressure after menopause. What causes high blood pressure? In most cases, it is difficult to identify the exact cause of hypertension. There are several risk factors that may contribute to developing high blood pressure such as being overweight, drinking too much alcohol, physical inactivity, family history, smoking, and consuming too much salt in your diet. How can you prevent it? Reducing the risk factors will help prevent high blood pressure. It is also important to have a yearly physical examination with your healthcare provider to monitor your blood pressure and identify concerns early. For more information about high blood pressure, or for available programs and services, contact Health Link Alberta where nurses are available 24-7 to provide health advice and information. Call 1-866-408LINK (5465) or 780-408-LINK (Edmonton area) or 403-943-LINK (Calgary area) or visit www.albertahealthservices.ca. IN MEMORIAM

LOVINGLY REMEMBERED, Karon Elsie Lakeman (nee Hiron) Born: May 7, 1942 Passed: April 9, 2008 5 years has come and gone since we had to say goodbye. Although some questions still remain, we have to all try, to understand the reasons and stop asking ourselves, why? God saw you getting tired, a cure not meant to be. He took your hand and whispered, "Karon, will you come with me?" Even though we all grieve, we know you are now free of all the pain and suffering and not question, why me? We all remember the love, the laughter and the play, All the words we left unsaid must now stay that way. Your parting has left us such a void, we will try to fill with remembered joys. A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss...... Ah yes, these things we surely do miss. Your time with us surely seemed too brief We'll try not to waste ours with undue grief.
