Big River Comes to Bashaw The Tony Award winning musical, Big River: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, opens April 16 for a 2-weekend run in Bashaw, Alberta. Based on Mark Twain's beloved novel and propelled by an award winning score from Roger Miller, this jaunty journey provides a brilliantly theatrical celebration of pure Americana. Twain's timeless classic sweeps us down the mighty Mississippi as the irrepressible Huck Finn (played by Wesley Wilson) helps his friend Jim (Crux Phiri), a slave, escape to freedom at the mouth of the Ohio River. Their adventures along the way are hilarious, suspenseful and heartwarming, bringing to life your favorite characters from the novel, including the Widow Douglas (Terri Brown-Gust) and her stern sister, Miss Watson (Tasha Ramstad); the uproarious King (Ben Wilson) and Duke (Brian Miller), who may or may not be as harmless as they seem; and adding to the fun are Huck's partner in crime, Tom Sawyer (Coleman Miller), and their rowdy gang of pals; Huck's drunken father, the sinister Pap Finn (Damien Scofield); the lovely Mary Jane Wilkes (Hannah Miller) and her trusting family. Winner of seven Tony Awards including Best Musical, Best Music and Best Book of a Musical, Big River opened on Broadway in 1985 and ran for over 1,000 performances. Big River opens on April 16th and plays Fridays and Saturdays at 7:00 pm and Sundays at 2:00 pm on April 16, 17, 18, 23, 24, 25. Tickets $20 each 6 – 12 years $10 Under 6 Free.

Air Quality Concerns Aired in Mirror Almost 40 people met on April 6, 2010 in Mirror to discuss concerns regarding the increased in CN activity, particularly since the bunkhouses were moved in January of 2009, and its effect on air quality and residents’ health. Though invited, a representative from CN did not attend. Residents were still able to share their concerns with Blaine Calkins (MP), Ray Prins (MLA), and Bill Knight (County Councillor). Some of the concerns expressed included: CN workers’ failure to park the engines where they are supposed to, the constant running of the diesel engines which spews diesel fumes into the air all night, the noise and vibrations caused by the all-night activity, and a lack of response from CN. Blaine, Ray, and Bill noted the various concerns made, and will follow up on the situation with the Minister and other advisory bodies. U

Winner of the "B" event - Charles Stone Team sponsored by Canadian Natural Resources “I was driving happily along when I saw the flash of a traffic camera. I figured that my picture had been taken for exceeding the limit even though I knew that I was not speeding. “Just to be sure, I went around the block and passed the same spot, driving even more slowly, but again the camera flashed. “Now I began to think that this was quite funny, so I drove even slower as I passed the area once more, but the traffic camera again flashed. I tried a fourth and fifth time with the same results and was now laughing as the camera flashed while I rolled past at a snail's pace. “Two weeks later, I got five tickets in the mail for driving without a seat belt.”

It Pays to Advertise A lion met a tiger as they drank beside a pool Said the tiger, “Tell me why you’re always roaring like a fool?” “That’s not foolish,” said the lion with a twinkle in his eye. “They call me King of all the beasts, it pays to advertise!” A rabbit heard them talking and ran home like a streak, He thought he’d try the lion’s plan, but all he did was squeak! A fox came to investigate and had dinner in the woods – The Moral is “Never advertise unless you’ve got the goods!” - Rulon Hillam

The Chautauqua A13

Take A Deep Breath, It’s April! by Loraine Anderson It’s a good thing Easter came right at the beginning of April this year, because the rest of the month is pretty busy. We will have need of all that chocolate fortification! The calendar here at BDSS is full. We will be celebrating the annual Volunteer Appreciation week with a barbeque on April 20 here at BDSS. The party starts at 11:30am and will include a presentation to this year’s Bashaw Volunteer of the Year. To nominate your favorite volunteer, just fill out a nomination form (available in April’s Community Connections and at the office). We are sadly lacking in nominations at the moment, so please, give it some thought and made a nomination! Another major focus this month is the Accreditation visit at the Day Care. This visit involves an in depth government inspection of all aspects of day care life from how the crayons are stored to when the children play and nap. Long hours have been spent by day care staff and many volunteers to ensure that all the paper work has been completed, all safety measures met, and all required standards are kept. Although the week is designated, the actual visitation day is a guess, so it will be a “pins and needles” time. One of the many advantages to having accreditation status is enhanced government funding that will enable Generations Day Care to offer affordable fees and subsidies. April is also AGM month for BDSS and the Food Bank, so lots of reports need to be written, the past year reviewed, and plans for the future set in place. Annual General Meetings are a chance for public input into non profit organizations. It is a time to welcome new members and to thank all those who have volunteered. April 13 at 6pm Food Bank members gather for their meeting, then, at 7pm Bashaw and District Support Services hold theirs. Both meetings are at the BDSS offices on Main Street.

Youth Get Down to Business! FREE Youth Entrepreneurship Camp Mirror– Applications are now being accepted for the 14th Annual Alberta Youth Entrepreneurship Camp (AYEC). The 2010 AYEC is for youth aged 13-15 who have an interest in business. Youth will compete in an essay competition that will allow them to attend the camp for FREE, thanks to the generous support of the camps community sponsors. Sixty youth from Southern Alberta will attend the camp running August 15th to the 21st, being held once again at the Eagles Nest Ranch in Cypress Hills, Alberta. This one week entrepreneurial-based camp combines the education of business training with a summer camp atmosphere. Campers hear from guest speakers and participate in workshops to learn the components of a business plan such as marketing, advertising, cash flows and record keeping. Youth are put into business teams where they plan a business idea, meet with suppliers and bankers, build a product or a service and on the final day of camp these youthful business ventures are open for business. Campers pay back their business loans and split their profits amongst their business team. It’s not only about numbers and business plans though. These youth get to participate in a variety of summer camp experiences and recreational activities. Zipline, horseback riding, wall climbing, mountain biking, swimming or relaxing in the hot tub are just a few examples of activities the youth get involved in.

For those who would like a night on the town, The Big River Musical Theatre is playing at Bashaw United Church. Call BDSS at 780 3724074 for tickets and show times. This year, Huck Finn and Jim explore freedom, life, and love as they raft down the Mississippi River. A coproduction by Bashaw Adult Learning Council and Bashaw United Church, Big River is the 4th musical theatre to come to Bashaw. The talent pool, both on stage and in the wings is amazing. Under the direction of Lori Miller and Robin King, adults and youth alike have been gathering 3 times a week for the past 3 months. Cast members hail from Ponoka, New Norway, and Bashaw and their dedication to the project is outstanding. With sets designed by Mary Kinsella and costumes by Cindy Hunter, the United Church has been transformed into the Deep South for 4 evening performances and 2 matinees. It’s a journey not to be missed! Tickets are selling quickly, so don’t miss out.

Youth that are interested in more information or applying to the camp can contact Community Futures East Parkland at 403-788-2212. Also, youth are encouraged to visit the website at www.ayec.ca. Application forms can be picked up from Community Futures East Parkland at Mirror, Alberta or online at www.eastparkland.com. Application Deadline is May 31st so pick up yours today! The Alberta Youth Entrepreneurship Camp is made possible by the generous donations of Alberta Lotteries, Holmes Printing, Alberta Employment and Immigration and Western Economic Diversification.

OBITUARY

FOR RENT

Joseph Andrew Heidt of Bashaw passed away Tuesday, March 23, 2010 at the Bashaw Care Centre at the age of 93 years. Joseph was born on October 23, 1916 at Tramping Lake, Saskatchewan. He is survived by his children; Don (Debbie) Heidt of Bashaw, Valerie Boode of Red Deer, Arlene (Ralph) Oberg of Bashaw, Vern (Cheryl) Heidt of Three Hills and Terry (Glenda ) Heidt of Red Deer; twelve Grandchildren and nine Great-Grandchildren. Also survived by one brother Andy Heidt of Devon, and one stepbrother George (Josie) Heidt of North Battleford, Sask., four stepsisters; Barbara Hamlin of Saskatoon, Sask., Tillie Willie of Delisle, Sask., Mary Moody of Kincardine, Ont., and Betty Frehlich of Edmonton. Joseph was predeceased by his wife Magdalena and daughter Anita Haakonson, son-in-law Thomas Boode, by his parents Andrew & Odelia Heidt, two stepmothers, Magdalena (Hartman) Heidt and Josephine (Ball) Heidt, infant brother Michael Heidt & Tony Heidt, one sister Julia Jacek, brothers Frank Heidt & John Heidt, six stepbrothers and four stepsisters.

For Rent: 1-bedroom home in Bashaw. Comes with washer, dryer, fridge and stove. No yard work. No pets. Phone: 780-372-3787.

Joseph will be remembered for his passion for farming, his ability to invent almost any piece of machinery that might be needed for the task at hand. He loved the challenge of repairing something broken; restoring it to usefulness. For the Lake Bend neighbours he was readily available for welding or to trim a little off the top with his ever sharp barber scissors. His quick wit and sense of humour brought sunshine to an otherwise dull day! When his health prevented him from helping with the farm work he continued to mow the grass, weed the garden and the saskatoon patch. Many beautiful rugs were hooked during the winter months and kept his hands busy after moving to the Bashaw Lodge and Bashaw Care Centre. He will be sadly missed. Funeral Mass was held at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Bashaw Monday March 29th @ 10:30am with Father Eduardo Escober officiating. Internment followed at the Bashaw Cemetery. Memorial Donations can be made to The Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish or to a charity of your choice. Arrangements Entrusted To Bashaw Funeral Home 780-372-2353 ~ A Wombold Family Funeral Home ~

It isn’t over until it’s over. Ever wondered what bit of genius went into the thought process to come up with such a gem? I have, and it didn’t make a whole lot of sense to me until Mother Nature took her best shot recently. Now it totally makes sense! Of course it is Alberta after all, but come on now. Is that fair play? Folks out raking and poking about in gardens and flower beds, gazing with fond images of fresh green things to be plucked from garden spots, then within a matter of hours we have thirty to forty car pileups and the snow and wind so bad you can’t see the end of your car for the whiteout! Just a wee reminder who really is in charge in the whole scope of things, after all perhaps? The few nice days we had did prompt the Silent One and me to get a bit of yard work done. We have trees hither and yon on Creamery Lane, so it’s a yearly ritual to gather pruning shears, dawn work gloves and sally forth to do some serious beautification. In reality we just cause a whole lot of other chores; gathering lopped off branches, piling and eventually hauling them off to the landfill, awh but it’s spring. In anticipation of upcoming fine spring days, we ventured to the city and haunted many of the finer garden shops in search a chain saw, one that could reach way up to the taller branches without placing life and limb in serious danger by having to stand on the picnic table or other unstable height extenders like a five gallon pail or some item just as unsafe! We came home all smiley with a cute little outfit; a small chain saw with a handle that extended and extended and extended! We would have had more trees trimmed if it hadn’t taken us so long to put the thing together. It was so well packed and strapped into its packing box it took us two days just to figure out how to get it out of the box! Then only to find out its little battery had to be charged for a full 24 hours before usage. We almost lost interest in the whole issue before we even got the thing ready for duty. But start we did, on a maple tree which had gotten totally unruly over the past year or three. First, a few modest little cuts here and there to tidy up the bottom branches so the Silent One could mow underneath the thing without dislodging his cowboy hat, then the whole thing took on a life of its own. We made the mistake of lopping off one offending low-hanging branch and a never-beforeexperienced wild daring intoxicated the both of us! Then the sky was the limit, higher and higher the little saw buzzed and cut as branches flew in every direction! All too soon the poor little tree stood there absolutely naked in our backyard with nary a branch or bud to provide one stitch of modesty. If we get reported to tree huggers anonymous we may have to do some serious public service to make amends for our ruthless trimming! We seriously hope the bit of moisture the recent squalls provided may be just enough to sprout a few green leaves to cover up the error of our ways. Hope you all had a joyous time with family and friends celebrating the resurrection of our Lord. One has to wonder if our society has totally lost the whole meaning of Easter. After all, it is way, way more than the Easter Bunny and a few color eggs! It’s the most wondrous gift we could ever hope to receive and yet, sadly, for way too many people, it was; business as usual on that holy of Holiest days. Makes you wonder what this world is coming too, doesn’t it? Mary Ellen Williams is from Delburne, Alberta where she has written a number of books including So, This is Chain Lakes and Dreamcatchers. To find out more information, contact Blue Ridge View Publishers at 403-749-2047 or email [email protected]. A man appeared before St. Peter at the pearly gates. “Have you ever done anything of particular merit?” St. Peter asked. “Well, I can think of one thing,” the man offered. “Once, at a highway rest stop, I came upon a gang of high-testosterone bikers who were threatening a young woman. I directed them to leave her alone, but they wouldn’t listen. So, I approached the largest and most heavily tattooed biker and smacked him on the head, kicked his bike over, ripped out his nose ring, and threw it on the ground. ‘Now, back off!!’ I yelled ‘Or you’ll answer to me!’” St. Peter was impressed: “When did this happen?” “Just a couple of minutes ago.”

The tavern keeper! And who pays for all this? The Chautauqua B7

By Graham L. Harle

from its head” which Mr. Walcott had identified as individual jellyfish and sea cucumbers. The misidentification is not surprising, says the ROM, as the animal is squashed flat in the rock. This “misidentification” was a feature in the exhibit in the Whyte Museum.

In recent years, my wife and I have not been to Banff very often, but last year (2009) we went to Banff for a three-day holiday in July.

Mr. Walcott’s third wife, Mary Vaux Walcott, produced over 400 illustrations of the wild flowers she observed during her trips to the site.

We saw some advertising for the Banff Centre’s new summer program involving young adults interested in professional dancing careers, which was introduced in 2008.

In 1925, the Smithsonian Institution published a five-volume work of Mary Walcott’s illustrations. The illustrations were exhibited at the Canmore Museum and Geoscience Centre from June 1 to September 8 last year.

The Burgess Shale

The dancers performed Raymonda Variations, Grosse Fuge, and Romeo and Juliet’s Pas de Deux, accompanied by four musicians playing a cello, a viola, a violin, and a piano. It was fabulous. We also saw Michael Ondaatje - the novelist (for example “The English Patient”) and poet - who was born in Sri Lanka and has lived in Canada since 1953. He was in Banff to discuss one of two films he had made years ago, “The Clinton Special,” about Theatre Passe Muraille’s “The Farm Show.”

There was also a family-orientated theatre program last year at the Kicking Horse Campground in Yoho National Park about the Burgess Shale. Charles Walcott’s great granddaughter, Erin Younger, visited Alberta and B.C. in August, 2009, and she gave presentations at the Emerald Lake Lodge in B.C., the Canmore Museum in Alberta, and the Kicking Horse River Lodge in Golden, B.C.

The we went to the Whyte Museum in Banff and discovered that they had an exhibit celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the finding of the Burgess Shale.

Ms. Younger, with Dr. Desmond Collins (a curator at the Royal Ontario Musuem and an authority on Walcott’s life history), co-guided a hike to the Burgess Shale and the Walcott Quarry on August 25, 2009.

Alberta has its dinosaurs, but just west of Banff, and across the border in British Columbia, is the Burgess Shale. The site was recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1981. I have known of the Burgess Shale for years, but have not seen the site.

Ms. Younger apparently has a wealth of information and photographs, and the focus of her presentations was to be on her grandmother’s (Walcott’s daughter Helen’s) experiences when accompanying her father to the Burgess Shale site.

The Burgess Shale was discovered by palaeontologist Charles Doolittle Walcott in 1909 in Yoho National Park, operated by Parks Canada.

Walcott’s discovery is only beginning to be recognized. And the 100th Anniversary seemed to be a low-key affair. Nevertheless, it was an important event. _____________________________________________________

The Whyte Museum, Parks Canada, and the Royal Ontario Museum hosted the Burgess Shale exhibit at the Whyte Museum, which ran from July 6 - September 7, 2009. Included in the centennial was an international science conference at the Banff Centre, put on by the Royal Ontario Museum, Canadian Geological Survey, and the Smithsonian Institution in the U.S. There was also to be a Burgess Shale fossil exhibit at Field, B.C. in the fall, created by Parks Canada. It was in 1909, on the western slop of Mt. Field, that Charles Walcott, then Secretary to the Smithsonian Institution, discovered the fossils fossilized soft-bodied marine organisms that lived in the Cambrian Sea some 505 million years ago. How did Charles find the site? Well, he was “navigating the Burgess Pass on horseback” (says the Explorer of May, 2009) on a well-used mountain trail when he discovered the fossils. He had come to Yoho National Park in search of “stone bugs” which had been excavated during the construction to the Canadian Pacific railway line. Charles Walcott returned to the site the next year with his sons and established a quarry. He returned almost every year thereafter until 1924, and collected 65,000 specimens which were shipped by rail to the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., U.S.A. Walcott’s quarry lies along a ridge on Mt. Wapta, across the Burgess Pass from Mt. Burgess. Mt. Burgess has two peaks, and the highest of these is to be named “Walcott Peak,” which is best viewed from Emerald Lakes, says the Yoho National Park brochure. Charles D. Walcott died in 1927. A second quarry was dug in 1930. The Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) has a large collection of fossils from the Burgess Shale, and earlier in 2009, before we went to Banff, the summer edition of the ROM Magazine had a story about an animal called “Hurdia Victoria” that had been collected by Charles Walcott. It turns out that Mr. Walcott had misidentified it, as a team of experts from the ROM, Uppsala University in Sweden, and the British Museum, discovered that the fossil also had a “huge three-part carapace projecting

Greening Your Spring Routine Spring has something in the air. It gets us excited to get outdoors again and motivated to clean up and clean out. For most home owners it’s the time to get out in the yard and start cleaning up. Here are a few suggestions on where you can green your spring routine. • Green your Garden – Instead of kicking your household organics to the curb, use them to start a backyard compost. Save your grass clippings and layer the organic materials. It’s easier than you think. No yard? How about worm (vermi) composting? • Green your Storage Space – Clean up and donate your gently-used materials to agencies that connect with your values. Or have a Garage Sale. They’re fun and you get to chat with your neighbours. • Green Roof Water – Consider one or two rain barrels to capture the rain water that flows off the roof. Save it to water your yard plants and garden. • Green your Transportation – Try public transit once a week...you might get hooked. Or ride your bicycle for short errands instead of using your vehicle. • Green your Cleaning – Use less toxic and green products to clean the house. Clean with re-usable cotton or micro-fiber cleaning cloths instead of wasting paper towels. Create your own rags using old bath towels, T-shirts and socks. Throw them in the washing machine after each use. • Green your Carbon Use – Do you have a second refrigerator? Fridges use a lot of energy. Can you do without a second one? • Green your Airspace - Make your own air fresheners. Simmer cinnamon, orange peel and cloves on your stove for a welcoming aroma. Instead of buying expensive electric filters to remove indoor air pollutants, buy a houseplant to naturally freshen your air. Good choices are chrysanthemums, English ivy, spider plants and Boston ferns. Or open the windows! • Green your Wash – Wash your clothes in cold water and hang them outside to dry. Share your greening tips on onesimpleact.alberta.ca

Journey Down The BoomTown Trail

Grocery Shopping When I meet with people about their budgets they usually have no problem telling me how much they spend on their fixed expenses (eg. Mortgage or rent, car payments etc). One category that stumps most of us is “food.” We know we have to buy food and we know it’s expensive, but most people do not have a good idea of how much they are actually spending on groceries. One thing I do to try to regulate my food budget is to menu plan. Before the first Tuesday of each month I start with a fresh piece of paper and I write down the dates until the first Tuesday of the following month. Then I start filling in each day with what we will be having for dinner that night, taking into account who will be home, what activities we have and any special occasions. I then take another piece of paper and write down every ingredient I will need to make each of those meals. I don’t enjoy cooking nor am I particularly good at it so my menu tends to be fairly simple. I try to include using leftovers or any ingredients that I may have a lot of that I don’t want to go to waste. I take that paper and go through the fridge, cupboards and freezer and cross off everything I already have. One of the biggest wastes is re-buying things you already have; if it expires you haven’t saved any money even if you did get it on sale! This list has now become my grocery list. I take note of any coupons I have and write them on the list as well. (Keep in mind that just because you have a coupon for it doesn’t mean it’s the best deal). I take my list, my grocery bags and my calculator and off to the grocery store I go! Yes, this takes time and planning but it does eventually become a habit and it is worth doing because it takes the stress out of figuring out what to have for dinner, you don’t waste money on miscellaneous purchases that you can’t make a meal out of and there’s no waste. As I mentioned last time, planning for time off helps you save money – don’t forget to plan your meals when you have time off too. You know you have to eat so you might as well plan in advance. Healthy Alberta Fast Food the Healthy Way Between soccer practice, piano lessons, work, and school, it's often hard to avoid the pick-up window. You don't have to sacrifice good nutrition when ordering fast food. Read the menu and choose healthier alternatives such as sandwiches on whole-grain breads, leafy green salads with dressing served on the side, fruit salads, lower fat milk and yogurt smoothies, or grilled or roasted meat, chicken, or fish. Alternatively - do it yourself. Whip us home-made fast foods and take them to go. Examples include wrap-style sandwiches and smoothies.
