Every year in April Juniors take standardized testing in Holly that will decide many things. This is the first year in Holly that the juniors will take the SAT. In previous years the juniors had taken the ACT. Being the first year that this test is being given, there is some pressure on the juniors to do well to set the standard score. However, Holly’s top junior student Josie Cook says, “No I am not nervous at all because the teachers here at Holly have prepared me well.” She is still studying because this is after all the biggest test you will ever take; she is studying by looking over old notes and concepts. In the SAT you take two tests a Mathematics and English assessments. The test Josie is looking most forward to is the math portion - shout out to Mrs. Burns - the junior said ecstatically. This test is what gets you into college. After all, every college takes into account your test scores when considering you for acceptance, scholarships, and financial aid. The SAT has switched to a new grading system as well. The new system is out of 1600 points opposed to the old scoring of 2400. The average score on the SAT is 1000. However, to get into most colleges and private universities you are going to need to score somewhere near 1200. Some ways you can study for the SAT include taking the PSAT (which the sophomores take), taking numerous practice packets that Mrs. Burns provides, and really reviewing basic math and English concepts. These may be simple but when the pressure is on they can be the easiest ones to miss. The testing is set for April 11, 201, 7 at the Holly Methodist Church. Wish our students luck as they prepare for the future.

By Alexandria Gutierrez The Holly High School Baseball team is very excited to start the new season and is very anxious to win a state championship for a second time in a row! Mr. Eaton is the head coach and the assistant coach is Neil Thompson. They are extremely hungry. The Holly Wildcat baseball team had only one girl go out for the team and that was a junior, Josie Cook. The baseball team went to Rocky Ford for a tournament on Friday, March 17th and on Saturday, March 18th. On Friday, they played the Fowler Grizzlies and beat their team 10 to 0. They also played the Monte Vista Pirates and won 10 to 0. On Saturday, they faced off against the Lamar Savages and sadly they lost 18 to 1. They were not upset

about it because the Savages are a 3A team and Holly is only a 1A team. After the loss from the Lamar Savages, the team was just ready to move on and continue to work harder in practice. Ricardo Juarez, a senior, and the Varsity pitcher wants to win a state championship this year because it is sadly his last year in high school playing for the Wildcats. Juarez got a full ride baseball scholarship to play at Northeastern Community College in Nebraska. On March 28th, the Holly Wildcats traveled to play against Crowley County. They defeated the Chargers 11 to 1. Brandon Wilson says that he was excited to play because whenever the team is up and winning he plays better and is in

a good mood! Whenever the team is losing Wilson tries to fight hard to get caught back up. Knowing that he tries, makes people look at him as a leader. The season is still continuing and everyone is tremendously eager to see where they end up going into districts!

By Taylor Neugebauer This weekend the track team had a successful weekend at both Cheyenne Wells and Limon. Erick Chaparro says he had a good time at Cheyenne Wells because he had a P.R. of 36.8 ft. in triple jump. He was also a part of the 4x100 relay team who took 5th place and the 4x200 relay team, who he said would’ve done well but Andy fell and caused a situation as to why they did not take first. At Limon, Chaparro says that it wasn’t as good as Cheyenne Wells, but in the 4x100, they competed against big schools so they did alright. Michael Rushton jumped a 16.4 in long jump at Cheyenne Wells and ran a 2:28 in the 800. He did not compete at Limon because he was at prom in Cheyenne

Wells on Saturday. Kobe Davis ran in the 4x800 at Cheyenne Wells and they took first place. He also ran in the throwers relay and they also took first place. At Limon, Davis said that the 4x800 relay team took 5th place. He also ran in the 4x200 for the first time at Limon and they placed 5th. Kobe also branched out and participated in the javelin throw and he was not proud to say that girls beat him in that event. Kallie Cathcart also had a good weekend of track. She set a personal record in long jump at 16 feet, however the judges said there was too much wind, therefore, it did not count. The medley relay team took second place and she got third place in high jump at 4’8”. At

Limon, Kallie got second in long jump at 15’1” and second in high jump at 4’8”. She also ran in the 4x800 and they took second place. In conclusion, the track team had a lot of success. The boys took first place overall at the Cheyenne Wells track meet. Good luck in the future to both teams!

It is prom season and everyone is excited. Right now, everyone is trying to figure out who they want to sit by. When interviewing with who is in charge of the seating, Alex Gutierrez says, “It’s good but complicated because I have to make it fair, but it’s really stressing.” Girls already have their dresses in and people are prom posing. The music list is figured out, so it will definitely be lit. Guys also already have their tuxes ordered and are getting their sizes done. People are excited to get down that night. The prom vehicles are going to be interesting this year, and the night will be filled with fun and adventure. People have been prom posing left and

right. Making them all cute and cheesy for the girls because everyone knows that girls love that. Personally, I did a scene from the end of “Can’t Buy Me Love” where I rode away with my date into the sunset on a lawnmower. The night is going to be one to remember. This year the theme of the dance is “The Great Gatsby,” so bring your Boston accents and your cheesy, white people dance moves that you are ready to bust out on command. You never know when the chicken dance song is going to come on. As for after prom the events should be fun. There are prizes that have the seniors oozing in their socks with excitement for who gets what. As for the after prom celebration,

Prom should be something you will always remember. This is the last prom that seniors will attend and they should make it the best yet. Afterprom will be fun after prom is over. The seniors worked very hard to get a lot of donations. After-prom might be even more fun than prom. Make sure you have fun and be safe.

By Diana Olague The day is getting closer and closer for the seniors to graduate, which means that there are invitations being handed out. It’s the time of year when graduates can remember the last four years with our friends, celebrate all of our achievements, see each other off before we leave for college, and even receive gifts or money from relatives. From the invitations to the decorations to the cake, there is a lot of planning and preparation that goes on, which can be overwhelming. In less than a month, there are going to be many graduations parties or just dinners after the ceremony. There are some seniors that have everything ready and are just waiting for the

day, and there are others who are still trying to get everything organized. Saturday, May 13 the seniors who are having a party, with dinner and a dance are Ricardo Juarez, Jesus Perez, and Leonel Martinez. The seniors who are having a small get together with just food will be Ashlyn Crossland, Flor Orozco, Macy Kennedy, and Sigi Avalos. For Sunday, after the graduation ceremony, there is going to be many dinners and get together. Marshall Pierce, Brandon Kalma, Marie Gomez, Rachel Kodavatikanti, Nakayah Isley, Jordan Lozano, and myself, Diana, will all have dinners and get together. The ones that will be having a party on Sunday will be Paulina Rodriguez, Tack

The school year is coming close to its end and it is even closer to an end for the seniors. They have some very tough decisions that they have to make, and they don’t have a lot of time to make them. Jesus Perez is going to attend the University of New Mexico and he plans on majoring in electrical engineering. His favorite high school memory is playing football and beating Wiley and McClave. He said that in ten years he sees himself being very successful and that he hopes life is going very well for him.

Yaniel will have a party but he has not set a date yet, Adriana will have a dinner but has no idea when. Now, it is up to you to choose which party or dinner you will be attending. You can decide if you just want to go to one and stay, or go to most of the parties and hang out for a while in each and one of them.

By Kleat Benson Syria has just experienced one of the worst chemical attacks it has ever experienced in its history. In the city of Beirut, a northern rebel-held area, was witness to the attack on Tuesday. The attack has now incited international outrage over the ever-increasing freedom from punishment that the Syrian government has enjoyed in the country’s six years of warfare. Along with other Western Leaders, President Trump in particular was especially outraged with the chemical attack and blamed the Syrian Government and its leader President Bashar al-Assad for the attack. The United States has appealed to Russia and Iran to help in preventing a recurrence of such an attack that has many calling it a war crime. In the attack, dozens of people including

women and children were killed after experiencing such symptoms as writhing, choking, gasping, and foaming at the mouth after breathing in a nerve gas that may have contained a nerve agent and/or other banned and illegal chemicals. Witnesses have stated that the toxic substance had spread after warplanes were seen flying overhead and dropping bombs in the early hours of the morning. The substance was so deadly that some of the rescue workers had collapsed and grew ill after breathing in the toxic substance themselves. The attack had taken place in the Idlib Province where its health department has stated that 69 people had died and released a list of their names; however, the dead are still to be identified and humanitarian groups have stated that

the number of deaths may actually be higher than what the health department has said, and could actually be as high as 100. President Assad had renounced the use of chemical weaponry four years ago after a large chemical attack was carried out by his forces as confirmed by American intelligence agencies. As with every other chemical munition used in Syria he has since denied that his military was responsible for the attack.

By Robert Gutierrez Last year, rapper Kevin Gates was convicted for assault when he had kicked a woman in the chest after repeatedly telling her to quit touching him. It was at one of the rapper’s concerts when a young woman had been groping Gates inappropriately. Multiple times Gates had told her to stop, but she kept repeating the action. Eventually, Kevin kicked the woman in the chest (who also sustained no injuries whatsoever.) Gates was sentenced to six months in prison after being convicted by a jury full of women. The “victim” had changed her story several times, from

saying that it was a dare to explaining it was an accident… but to no avail. There was some controversy, though, as the jury and the judge were all women. It may be that the jury was biased. Nevertheless, Gates was due to get released this past month, but didn’t. There was talk that he might not get out for a while. It turns out that Gates was wanted for something that dates back to 2013. Kevin was due to show up to court four years ago in ’13 for carrying illegal firearms, but had failed to show up on multiple occasions, and had a warrant out for his

arrest. On March 29th, Gates was seen being escorted to a Chicago prison where he will await trial. By the way it looks, Gates could possibly serve some more time for the incident that took place a few years ago. There’s no say to how much time he could do, though. “#FreeGates” has been a trending hashtag to show how much the music of Kevin Gates has been missed. That hashtag alone has been tweeted over two million time since the conviction of the rapper.

By Sigi Avalos There has been a lot of celebrity news that you can’t even count them if you wanted to. Mama June has lost weight, Kylie Jenner and Tyga seem to have separated and maybe for good this time, and many more. Mama June, the mother in the show “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo”, said that she wanted to show her sugar bear that she could do it and is worth it. She didn’t let anything he said affect her and wanted to show him that she was able to do an incredible body transformation. Tyga and Kylie Jenner have also had their problems and this one may be the biggest one yet. About ten months ago Kylie Jenner invited Tyga to live in her mansion. Not too long ago he moved out and who knows how long that will

last. Their relationship is always on and off but they always seem to be talking to each other. Problems may be that they don’t spend as much time together because she is a star of the show “Keeping Up With the Kardashians” and he is a rapper that is always on the move. Also age could be reason because she is 19years-old and Tyga is 27-years-old. They are both young and they just may be focused on themselves and their careers than worrying about having a relationship. It may not be a big problem because this is nothing new since they are always having problems in their relationship. Barry Manilow has also made the news because of his announcement of him being gay. His husband is Garry Kief

which is also his manager. He revealed they have had a long term secret relationship. Manilow describes himself as being private but everybody that knew him knows about his relationship with Kief. He has no shame and is proud of his announcement of his relationship with Kief.

By Cordell Doss The Brontosaurus, the “thunder lizard”, was one of the largest animals to ever walk on the earth. The prehistoric giant is part of a large family of long-necked, long-tailed dinosaurs called sauropods. This dinosaur is one of the most wellknown dinosaurs and for more than a century, scientists didn’t believe it existed. The Brontosaurus genus was named in 1879 by paleontologist Othniel Charles Marsh. In 1903 paleontologist Elmer Riggs found that Brontosaurus was apparently the same as the genus Apatosaurus. Now a new study suggests that the Brontosaurus may have a chance to live once again. The original Apatosaurus and Brontosaurus fossils appear to actually be from separate groups. A nearly

300-page study analyzed 477 different physical features of 81 sauropod specimens, involving five years of research and numerous visits to museum collections in Europe and the United States. The initial goal of the research was to clarify the relationships among the species making up the family of sauropods known as the diplodocids. The scientists conclude that three known species of Brontosaurus exist. The Brontosaurus excelsus, the first discovered, as well as B. parvus and B. yahnpin. Although while Kenneth Carpenter, director and curator of paleontology at Utah State University Eastern’s Prehistoric Museum, finds this study impressive, he notes the fossil on which Apatosaurus is based has never

been described in detail, and suggests the researchers should have done so if they wanted to compare it to with Brontosaurus. The new research that helped resurrect Brontosaurus may have birthed new mysteries as well.

Q: How do you tell the fake friends from the real friends? A: When do they choose to hang out with you? If it’s only when it’s convenient for them then they’re probably not real friends. If they’re constantly causing drama and bringing your name into things that have nothing to do with you, they’re probably fake. Q: Do you like the Steelers? A: Who’s asking? If it’s Mr. Doss, then yes! Best team in the world! But if anyone else wants to know then no. Q: What is a good amount of money you would spend on a prom dress and what is too extreme? A: Probably set a limit of $200 anything over that may be too much, but as long as it’s somewhat close to that then its fine. Honestly I just found mine on the side of the road. Q: I’m a freshman. Is it bad for me to crush on a senior? A: No, not at all. My rule is no one older by 4 years or younger by 4 years. Q: Why is Xbox better than PS4? A: It’s not! Obviously PC is the superior console. Don’t bring the rubbish to my living quarters! Q: What is Hamilton? A: Hamilton is a new-ish musical that made it big in the last year or so. It came out in 2015 and was made popular for being a musical with mostly raps. The songs are of great quality and I recommend seeing it or at least listening to the music.
