Nomination for TREASURER Candidate: ANTHONY ZIMBA, Zambia
My name is Anthony Mulenga Zimba. I live and work in Lusaka, Zambia Africa. I am honoured to be nominated to run for the position of treasurer in the 2017–2021 International Bureau for Epilepsy Elections. I look forward to the opportunity to serve our organization in new ways in collaboration with all my colleagues who will be elected. I am a holder of the following qualifications: 1. Cambridge School Certificate obtained in 1978 from London 2. Diploma in Clinical and Medical Sciences 1982, College of Health Sciences Lusaka, Zambia 3. Professional Diploma in Epilepsy Care, Leeds Metropolitan University, UK 4. Certificate in Clinical Epilepsy from Foundation For Profession Development, RSA 5. Certificate in Project Management and implementation, University of Zambia, Lusaka, Zambia I work as Epilepsy Specialist at Levy Mwanawasa hospital in Lusaka, Zambia at the same time; I am the founder and Chair of Epilepsy Association of Zambia. The formation of Epilepsy Association was to address the needs of people with epilepsy and their families who are often stigmatized and usually denied their basic human rights. Since the formation of Epilepsy Association of Zambia under my leadership, the following have been achieved: 1. Establishment of Epilepsy clinics government health institutions in collaborations with the Ministry of health. 2. Launch of Global campaign against epilepsy Zambia program in 2003 3. Established rehabilitation epilepsy project with IBE funding support in 2009 4. Held first epilepsy conference in Zambia in 2009 5. Held Epilepsy symposium in collaboration with the Ministry of health 6. Held Neuroscience Teaching course in 2014 for Sab-Saharan African countries in collaborations with European Neurological Society 7. Launch of public awareness programs in Schools, Community and TV/Radio I have served two terms as Vice President of the International Bureau for Epilepsy- Africa from 2009 - 2013 and 2013-2017: Some of my achievements are: 1. Conducted supervisory visits to IBE Chapters in Malawi, Tanzania, Uganda, Kenya, Mauritius, Ethiopia, Senegal, Gambia, South Africa, Zimbabwe and prospecting countries North Sudan, Lesotho, Rwanda and Botswana. Made contacts with Mozambique and Angola. It is worth to mention that some of the trips undertaken were self sponsored. 2. With the support of IBE international Executive committee, managed to lobby the Joint Executive Committee of IBE and ILAE to hold 1st African Epilepsy Congress in 2012 in Nairobi, Kenya, 2nd Congress in 2014 in Cape-Town, South Arica and the 3rd to be held in May 2017 in Dakar, Senegal 3. Managed to affiliate IBE regional Executive Committee to Africa Disability Alliance board. 4. Increased the number of chapters in the region. 5. Organized regional Executive meetings in South Africa, Rwanda, Ethiopia and Kenya 6. I was invited to teach epilepsy course to health workers at Ifakala health Institute in Tanzania in 2013 7. Facilitated at a Neuroscience workshop for Junior Doctors in March 2015, organized by Sudanese Society for Neurosciences in Khartoum, Sudan
Some of my focus areas as a treasurer will be as follows: 1. To work closely with members of the Management and Executive Committee to strictly safeguard the IBE finances as per financial procedures. 2. One of the priorities I will have as a treasurer is to come up with plans how to source funds in consultation with the finance and management committees. 3. I wish to come up with plans and programs to help our chapters especially from poor resource countries how to raise funds for their operations. 4. I pledge to be up to date in all financial planning and budgeting. 5. I would like also to ensure that the use of our organization’s funds matches with the incomes and adhere to the strict conditions set by our well-wishers and funding bodies. 6. I hope to be regular and prompt in the preparations of reports for audit and presentation to meetings as financial regulations demands. I believe I have a number of valuable qualities I would bring to the position of a treasurer in IBE. My experience of treasury work dates as far back as 1998 when I held various positions as a treasurer in a good number of Associations. This is in addition to the booking keeping and accounts option subjects I did at school. I would like to assure you that, I have the energy and passion to serve our organization diligently, so vote for me.
