The Architectural League of New York Annual Report 2014/2015

In a recent review of the League’s new book 30 Years of Emerging Voices: Idea, Form, Resonance, Karrie Jacobs noted that “Revisiting three decades of winners as a continuum is revealing about what architecture truly is: not the province of a few celebrated practitioners, but an ongoing process of invention and reinvention by a multitude of talented and thoughtful firms.” The League’s programs and projects in the 2014-15 season manifest this truth about “what architecture truly is” in myriad ways, from the extraordinary freshness and passion in the ideas produced by the Reinventing Branch Libraries project teams; to the expansive thinking about resources and the designed world evident in the projects presented by Hadley and Peter Arnold of the Arid Lands Institute, and Jen Maigret and Maria Arquero de Alarcón of MAde Studio, in The Five Thousand Pound Life: Water symposium this winter; to the thought-provoking investigations of the boundaries of material, digital, and imagined space by Erin Besler and Thom Moran in their League Prize lectures and installations. The fascinating projects and people and criticism and art works presented week after week on Urban Omnibus, the project ideas of the scores of entrants to the Deborah Norden Fund travel grant and the Folly competition— all of this and much, much more adds up to a magnificently varied manifestation of the creative and intellectual vitality of architecture and design in the current moment. It is a continuous pleasure for the staff of the League to be able to help foment, support, curate, interpret, and make available to the wider world this extraordinary outpouring of creativity. In addition to being pleasurable, it is also demanding, and I thank the entire League staff for the dedication and intelligence they bring to our work. I also want to acknowledge and thank Cassim Shepard, the founding editor of Urban Omnibus, who left the League in December to work on a book on the ideas that have shaped and evolved with Urban Omnibus, for his truly significant work on that publication.

For several decades the League has been the lucky beneficiary of the extraordinary graphic design talent of longtime board member Michael Bierut. This year Michael and his team at Pentagram have designed four particular projects for the League that are so spectacular that they deserve special mention. The perfect, intricate logo for Craft, our Beaux Arts Ball; the multi-edition programs for the President’s Medal dinner honoring Harry Cobb; the witty and thought-provoking graphic campaign for the League Prize: Authenticity, that included 3000 hand-numbered posters, and exhibition publicity and graphics featuring the signatures of the winners; and the remarkable combination of more than 1500 images, vast amounts of data, and a substantial amount of prose into the extremely handsome volume 30 Years of Emerging Voices: Idea, Form, Resonance for all of these, and everything else he does for the League, a huge thank you to Michael and his team. The now twice-mentioned 30 Years of Emerging Voices book deserves yet another: it provides a fascinating overview of three decades of North American architecture, through the lens of the League series very capably directed by Anne Rieselbach. Like the program it documents, the book is destined to become a significant marker in the understanding of this era. It will be celebrated in a series of events around the country over the coming year. The League could not produce what it does without the engagement, encouragement, and support of its board of directors, all of them accomplished individuals who bring to their service to the League a deep understanding of architecture and its significance to our collective life. In particular I thank Billie Tsien, the president of the League’s board of directors, for her deep, thoughtful, generous commitment to the League and its work. From lectures by leading international figures, to competitively awarded commissions that offer the opportunity to realize small projects in New York City, Architectural League programs inspire, educate, and demonstrate how design can shape and improve the built environment. This year’s Current Work speakers—prominent architects and artists from the United States, Europe, and Asia—were asked to focus on a single project, or small group of projects, from conception to construction, as a way to identify the ideas and issues that animate their work. Themes articulated in the lectures were amplified through moderated discussions following the talks, and through digital programming on ArchLeague.org, including an engaging conversation between Sheila O’Donnell, John Tuomey, and Kenneth Frampton, and a walk-through of Marlon Blackwell’s new School of Architecture at the University of Arkansas with Blackwell and Thomas Phifer. Now in its third season, the First Friday series of installations and receptions hosted by leading architecture, landscape, and engineering firms provided an inside view of each firm’s projects and office culture. The League continues to encourage the development of talented young architects and designers through a number of annual programs and special projects. The 32nd annual juried Emerging Voices lecture series, an invited competition open to practices in North America, featured eight firms from the United States and Mexico whose inventive design “voices” are beginning to influence the disciplines of architecture and landscape design. Authenticity, the theme for the 2015 Architectural League Prize for Young Architects + Designers, inspired the six competition winners to test the meaning of originality and reproduction. The Norden Fund Travel Grant, open to young designers and urbanists, was awarded to Ylan Vo for a study of the evolution of the postwar landscape in the A Luoi Valley in Vietnam. The Folly competition, a design/build residency to create an installation at Socrates Sculpture Park, asked applicants to consider questions including, “Is it folly to pursue an ideal?” and “If a folly has no utilitarian purpose, is it sculpture?” This year’s winning entry, “Torqueing Spheres,” designed by Mariana Ibañez and Simon Kim of IK Studio, was selected from over 120 submissions and is on display through the summer. The League acted as curatorial advisor for the competition, commissioned in partnership with Times Square Arts, which brought the bright, throbbing form of HeartBeat (later transformed to HeartSeat) to Times Square during late winter. Designed by Marcelo Ertorteguy and Sara Valente of Stereotank, the piece was relocated to DUMBO and later to Fort Greene Park. The year was rich in symposia organized by the League with partners. Sessions on Land and Water continued the series of Five Thousand Pound Life conferences; an event in connection with the Latin American architecture show at MoMA surveyed historic and contemporary strategies for incremental development of housing and neighborhoods. In November the League presented a symposium on the occasion of Michael Graves’ 50th anniversary in practice, examining his influence on architectural pedagogy, drawing, and the design of objects and interiors and the current state of these areas. The event provided both celebration and analysis of contemporary and recent architecture and design. The League benefits from collaborations with a range of institutions. We are grateful to our friends at The Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture and the Institute for Sustainable Design at The Cooper Union; the Center for an Urban Future; the Sheila C. Johnson Design Center and School of Constructed Environments at Parsons; Socrates Sculpture Park; the Museum of Modern Art; the Latin Lab at GSAPP, Columbia University; and the Times Square Alliance. The Architectural League produces a wealth of digital content that week by week, post by post, extends our reach to global audiences and deepens our inquiry into the voices, ideas, and issues we engage in pursuit of our mission. Our digital platforms allow us to offer new perspectives and understandings through original writing and videos, conversations and interviews, and documentation of live events. On ArchLeague.org, our In Conversation and On the Table series listened in on informal chats between leaders in the field, such as Current Work speaker Farshid Moussavi and Cooper Union’s Elizabeth O’Donnell debating the state of architectural education; and lively after-dinner conversations among this year’s Emerging Voices and journalists, curators, and former Emerging Voices. We followed Stereotank as they transformed plastic septic tanks into a glowing, pulsing, heart-shaped sound machine, and celebrated craftsmanship in a ten-part series on the exquisite details of the restoration of the former Williamsburgh Savings Bank, where the League held its Beaux Arts Ball. ArchLeague.org features also provided a chance to learn from Norden travel grant recipients about their research, including Angela Starita on Lina Bo Bardi in Brazil, and Julian Palacio on Eladio Dieste in Uruguay. And we added dozens of videos to our extensive archive of lecture documentation, including talks by Bernard Tschumi, Walter Hood, and Ursula von Rydingsvard. The League’s online publication, Urban Omnibus, continues to build and articulate a distinctive way of understanding the city, and citymaking, that embraces the range of disciplines, voices, work, and ideas required to build, shape, and run contemporary New York. Over the past year, Omnibus contributors traced the border between Brooklyn and Queens, explored the topography of the Bronx, unearthed the military history of northern Central Park, and learned how Times Square operates. We spoke with artists and archaeologists, historians and hydrologists, composers and community advocates, and unpacked the processes of participatory budgeting, ecosystem restoration, and the development of alternative energy infrastructures. Two columnists—Stephen Rustow and Susanne Schindler—joined the Omnibus roster to contribute quarterly dispatches on topics ranging from the privatization of views to affordable housing and preservation. Profiles in Public Service offered insight into the inner workings of city government through conversations with individuals striving to improve our city’s schools, libraries, bridges, health equity, and disaster response efforts. Urban Omnibus allows us not only to explore new corners of the city, but also to dive deeper into certain crucial topics—such as the architecture, history, policies, economics, and social experience of New York’s housing. This year, we published analyses of the new Sugar Hill residences in Harlem and the slated-fordemolition Lambert Houses in the Bronx; followed debates over homeowner buyouts in at-risk coastal communities on Staten Island and the privatization of a Mitchell-Lama co-op in Lower Manhattan; and examined NYCHA’s janitorial system and the implications of a Supreme Court ruling on enforcement of the Fair Housing Act. This past year also saw the departure of Urban Omnibus Founding Editor Cassim Shepard, who, in his six years at the helm, shaped the project with a deep knowledge of, enthusiasm for, and curiosity about how we tell the stories of cities that will fuel the project for years to come. The Re-envisioning Branch Libraries design study, carried out in collaboration with the Center for an Urban Future, created an opportunity to engage both of our digital platforms. Urban Omnibus contextualized the project with features on the history, architecture, and current conditions of branch libraries in New York and on innovative library practice and operations, while features on ArchLeague.org presented the projects created by the design study teams and responses from policymakers and community advocates. The Architectural League has always sought to bring people together to share their ideas and seek excellence, whether the young architects of 1881, gathering for a sketch problem, or today’s design community, seeing exciting projects on the boards at a First Friday. In recent years, the League’s work has expanded to new platforms, reaching ever wider and remote audiences, through the rich and provocative programming on ArchLeague.org and Urban Omnibus. This community of ideas, which we seek to foster locally, nationally, and internationally, proves ever more thrilling to us and, we hope, you. We are very conscious of the rapid changes in how architectural culture is produced, amplified, shared, and enjoyed in our new digital age. To maintain this vital community and get you the information you most want, the League is pursuing a number of efforts that we hope will allow you to connect with the League, our work, and each other more easily and efficiently. In the coming year, we will undertake major redesigns of our websites; a fresh look for our weekly newsletter and other e-communications; a simplified means to make event reservations and manage your membership; and a deepening of our presence on social media. In this spirit, we are also working to make information about the general culture of architecture and design in New York City more accessible. This spring marked the launch of the New York Architecture Diary, a project initiated by the League in partnership with a consortium of the city’s leading design organizations and schools to serve as a comprehensive resource for the rich array of design programming that occurs throughout New York. We acknowledge with deep gratitude the extraordinarily generous support of our many wonderful members and contributors. Without you nothing would be possible. Almost 10,000 individuals currently have access to League membership privileges, ranging from individual students to architects at the city’s largest design offices. We additionally thank the wide range of individuals, firms, corporations, and foundations that support League programs in other ways and made this year’s two special events – the Beaux Arts Ball and President’s Medal Dinner – so successful. In September, at the recently and magnificently restored Williamsburgh Savings Bank in Brooklyn, over 1200 guests celebrated this year’s Ball, which had the theme of Craft. A benefactors dinner was followed by conversation and dancing under the main dome of the bank, enlivened by eight commissioned animations by young design offices exactingly projected onto the building’s pendentives by Nuit Blanche New York. In May, we honored Henry N. Cobb with the League’s President’s Medal for “the truly consequential work he has created as designer, educator, thinker, writer, and leader…[he] embodies that combination of capability and conviction — artistic, intellectual, practical, and civic — that defines the ideal architect.” Cobb was presented the Medal by League President Billie Tsien at a dinner for over 300 and was toasted by Harvard University President Emeritus Neil Rudenstine, architects Merrill Elam and Mack Scogin, and engineer Guy Nordenson. The Board and staff of The Architectural League are deeply committed to continuing to encourage the personal and intellectual connections of the architectural community. We thank you for your past, current, and future engagement and support. Nicholas S. Anderson, Development and Communications Director
