On August 21, 2017, parts of the southeastern United States will experience a total solar eclipse during the afternoon hours with total blockage of the sun occurring around 2:34. This allows Floyd County teachers and students to experience an extremely rare event. Leading up to Aug 21st, we will be using this “teachable moment” to explore the Who? What? Where? When? and How? surrounding the Solar Eclipse. Teachers will be utilizing a variety of sources including NASA, the Tellus Science Museum and Floyd County educators to provide an meaningful learning experience for our students.
Information For Parents
For Floyd County, the moon will begin to cover the sun at 1:02 PM. The coverage will continue to increase, until it reaches its maximum coverage at 2:34 PM, at which point the moon will be covering 97% of the sun. The moon will continue moving off of the sun until 4:00 PM, at which point the sun will be completely visible again. Fortunately, the Armuchee/Glenwood Educational Foundation has made a donation toward the purchase of solar eclipse glasses for all students and faculty, so that everyone will be able to participate in this educational event. All students will be supervised during the eclipse event, and science teachers are already educating students about proper safety measures to follow during the eclipse. We also encourage all parents/guardians to review these safety measures with students at home in the days leading up to the eclipse. Classroom Learning Opportunities
The Solar Eclipse will provide an opportunity for students to experience concepts such as lighting, shadows, temperature, wind changes, and even animal behavior. This is also an excellent opportunity for students to make observations of the details they notice around them and hypothesize why the eclipse may cause those effects. We will follow our regular instructional schedule on August 21st to allow each teacher to have their students that day. Students will participate in the eclipse viewing with their regularly scheduled classes. 8th grade will be in connections classes at this time, but 8th grade teachers will work with connections teachers to actively supervise students during the eclipse. Eighth grade teachers will be paired with connections teachers as follows: Brownlow/Mitchell (PE), Hulsey/Hayes (PE), Park/Duhamel, Phinazee/Hurt (Band), Broxterman/Murdoch (Spanish), Taylor/McLaughlin (Tech). At 2:50, 8th grade students will report to their last class period of the day and will be dismissed from homeroom at the end of the day. At 2:10, students will begin pre-eclipse viewing from the NASA broadcast. Around 2:30, students will use the required safety eyewear to go outside with teachers to observe the eclipse. Students will also be provided with a snack of SunChips and Sunny D due to the delayed dismissal, courtesy of the Floyd County Schools Nutrition Department. Remember, we are extending the school day by 30 minutes so dismissal will begin at 3:45 instead of 3:15. Despite the safety measures we will implement during the eclipse, we also realize that some parents may have concerns about their child’s safety being outside during this event. To help alleviate those concerns, we will have an alternate location available for those who choose to remain inside and view the eclipse from the NASA broadcast. Furthermore, if you wish to check out your child prior to the eclipse you may do so as long as students are checked out prior to 2:00pm. However, this w ill not be an excused absence. Please call the school prior to 12:00pm on Monday, 8/21 if you do not want your child going outside to view the eclipse. Sincerely,
Chad Moore Principal Armuchee Middle School
