It has a global annual budget of $100 million with a wide range of both clinical and primary and public health programs. Amref has a strong focus on health systems strengthening, particularly at community and district levels. Its priority program areas include Maternal and Child Health, HIV/AIDS, Water, Sanitation and Hygiene, Training of Health Workers, and Clinical and Diagnostic Services. Amref Health Africa has offices in seven African countries and programs in over 30 countries across sub-Saharan Africa. It has 12 fundraising and support offices in North America and Europe. Amref Health Africa in the USA is the U.S. office of Amref Health Africa worldwide. Its primary responsibilities are to raise awareness and money to support Amref Health Africa's work, and to advocate for effective policies and adequate funding for international health development, especially in Africa.

The Position Amref Health Africa in the USA seeks a Director of Business Development to be a member of the senior management team, and support new business and resource development strategies for the organization. This role is an extraordinary opportunity to help a highly-regarded African health organization create lasting health change in Africa. The Director will report to Amref Health Africa USA’s Executive Director. As the primary liaison to US Government agencies and other institutional funders, the Director of Business Development will take the lead in identifying funding opportunities from institutional donors, and developing/writing grant proposals. S/he will also contribute to the larger strategic development of the Business Development Department as well as organization-wide initiatives.

Specific Responsibilities
Work closely with the Executive Director to support and contribute to the organization’s priorities, mission, vision, and core values aimed at increasing Amref Health Africa’s capacity to secure funding.
Take a leading role in guiding the development of engagement strategies with principal donors such as USAID, CDC, multilateral agencies, foundations, and private corporations.
Proactively identify and build connections with prospective donors and INGO partners in Washington DC.
Create new Public-Private partnerships; manage and grow existing partnerships.
Assume the lead in advance preparation for procurements including intelligence gathering, advanced opportunity tracking, networking, partnering, and teaming in advance of proposals.
Provide hands on management of proposal development process, grants management and reporting.
Travel to Africa two to three times each year to visit projects, support programs funded through Amref USA, support and collaborate on proposal writing, and confer with colleagues in the Amref offices both in Africa and in North America and Europe.
Travel domestically to develop or strengthen partnerships, confer with donors and attend conferences.
Supervise a Senior Manager of Business Development.
Qualifications The successful candidate should have at least 10 years of progressively increasing experience in business development and institutional fundraising and management. S/he will have demonstrated success in winning multi-million dollar, multi-year competitive grants from U.S. Government agencies and in forming effective coalitions with other agencies. Experience with corporate and foundation fundraising and with public/private partnerships is also highly desirable.

S/he should demonstrate experience as a supportive and effective supervisor.
A Master’s degree in public health, public administration, business administration, international development, or related field is highly desirable.
Prior experience working with grants from USAID, CDC, and in international health and development is required.
Experience working in developing countries is desirable.
Excellent written and oral communication skills are essential.
Capacity and desire to work effectively with colleagues from diverse backgrounds in Africa, Europe, and North America.
Work Location It is highly preferable that the Director of Business Development be based in Washington, DC.
