Aspiring Chefs to Compete for ACF Western Region Student Chef of the Year Cooks vie for regional award at The Academy of Arts in Reno, Nevada February 6. St. Augustine, Fla., January 19, 2016—Three young cooks are preparing to battle for the title of 2016 American Culinary Federation (ACF) Western Region Student Chef of the Year. The competition will take place at The Academy of Arts, Careers & Technology, Reno, Nevada, during the 2016 ACF Western Regional Culinary Salon, February 5-7. The three cooks are competing for the opportunity to represent the ACF Western region in the national competition at Cook. Craft. Create. Convention & Show, Phoenix, July 15-19. The regional winner receives bragging rights, travel expenses and a complimentary registration to the national competition. The national winner receives $1,000 and the title of 2016 ACF Student Chef of the Year. At the regional competition, cooks must prepare two portions of a main dish that incorporates chicken for judges in 1 hour, 40 minutes. Sponsored by Custom Culinary, Inc., the ACF Student Chef of the Year award recognizes an up-and-coming student who possesses a high degree of professionalism, culinary skill and passion for culinary arts.

Michelle Stephenson, of Provo, Utah, is a student at Utah Valley University (UVU), Orem, Utah, pursuing an associate degree in culinary arts. She is the night-shift kitchen lead at Station 22 Cafe, Provo. In 2015, Stephenson placed second in commercial baking competition at SkillsUSA, Louisville, Kentucky, and won a gold medal at an ACF competition. She also received the Student of Excellence Award from the department of Culinary Arts at UVU. After graduation in spring, she plans to pursue a career in catering. Stephenson is a member of ACF Beehive Chefs Chapter Inc.

Kendall Ross, of Colorado Springs, Colorado, is an apprentice at The Broadmoor, Colorado Springs, and student at Red Rocks Community College, Lakewood, Colorado. In 2014, he won a gold medal at an ACF-sanctioned competition. After completing The Broadmoor’s American Culinary Federation Education Foundation apprenticeship program, he will move to California to continue his culinary career in a seasonal ingredient-driven restaurant. Ross is an ACF national member.

Holly O'Neal of Kent, Washington, is nutrition assistant/cook at Virginia Mason Medical Center, Seattle. She recently graduated with an associate degree in culinary arts from Renton Technical College, Renton, Washington, where she received a 2014 Les Dames d’Escoffier scholarship. O’Neal is also working towards a bachelor’s degree in nutrition and culinary arts from Bastyr University, Kenmore, Washington. She plans to continue her culinary career in nutrition consulting. O’Neal is a member of ACF Washington State Chefs Association.
