ACF Eastern Long Island Chefs Chapter Named ACF Northeast Region Baron H. Galand Culinary Knowledge Bowl Champions March 29, 2016, St. Augustine, Florida—The smartest culinary students in the Northeast are from ACF Eastern Long Island Chefs Chapter, Riverhead, New York, according to the American Culinary Federation (ACF), the nation’s premier organization of professional chefs. The students won overall in the ACF Northeast Region Baron H. Galand Culinary Knowledge Bowl, held during ChefConnect: Atlanta, ACF’s Northeast/Southeast Regional Conference, March 13-15 at Hyatt Regency Atlanta. This year’s team members, pictured left to right, are Leo Figueredo (captain), Ann Marie Trksak, Danni Benincasa, Shannon Adams and coach Andrea Glick, assistant professor/chef-instructor, Suffolk County Community College, Riverhead. The team will compete for the national title at Cook. Craft. Create., July 15-19, in Phoenix. "The students at Suffolk County Community College continue to inspire me with their hard work and determination,” said Glick. “To have this victory for the third consecutive year is a tribute to this statement. We will continue to study and practice throughout the semester and look forward to the usual rigorous competition in Phoenix.” The Baron H. Galand Culinary Knowledge Bowl, created in 1992 and sponsored by American Technical Publishers and Vitamix, is a “Jeopardy”-style culinary competition named in honor of past ACF national president Baron H. Galand, CEC, AAC, HOF. Galand was a champion for junior members and encouraged them to get involved in their profession outside the kitchen. ACF knowledge bowls are open to junior culinary teams from ACF chapters, apprenticeship programs and accredited schools. Competition questions are drawn from five nationally published textbooks for culinary professionals that cover topics such as nutrition, safety and sanitation, and the art of modern cooking. The ACF Eastern Long Island Chefs Chapter team competed against four other teams for the overall win and a silver medal. Three other teams received medals: Owens Community College, Perrysburg, Ohio, and Westmoreland County Community College, Youngwood, Pennsylvania, received gold medals; and Hocking Technical College, Nelsonville, Ohio, received a bronze medal. More than 450 chefs, students and foodservice professionals attended ChefConnect: Atlanta. The conference was part of ACF’s Signature Series, which provides educational and networking opportunities for culinary industry professionals and students.
