STRIDE TIP SHEET Alberta Supports

a provincial organization under the Ministry of Community and Social Services Alberta Supports exists to assist Albertans’ wellness throughout their entire lives. They offer different programs for children, parents, people living with disabilities, and elderly. This programs are organized by service areas. Alberta Supports can help you will help you find and apply for more than 30 programs and 120 community services for:

Services and programs available: NG Personal support services • Victims of bullying, family violence, and/or any form of abuse (violence, sexual, child abuse) can access the distress services and personal support services (shelters, mental health aid, etc). Be mindful of waiting times, this is not an emergency police service.

Shelter and support services • Access and referrals to youth and adult shelters

Disability services • Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped (AISH): Basic monthly allowance for someone that have a permanent or severe disability and who is not expected to work. They can still work and earn up to $800 a month without affecting their AISH support • Disability Related Employment Supports (DRES) • Employment First • Family Support for Children with Disabilities (FSCD) • Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) • Persons with Developmental Disabilities (PDD) • Provincial Disability Supports Initiatives: supports individuals with disabilities to participate in and contribute to their communities. • Residential Access Modification Program (RAMP): Offers grants to help lower-income Albertans with mobility challenges modify their homes so they can enter and move around more easily.

Services for families • Child and youth support program: Financial and medical benefits for a child when the parents/ guardians are unable or unwilling to care for the child, and the child is being cared for in another home of an adult caregiver. Child care subsidy • Parent Link Centres provide parents and caregivers with free resources and support. The goal is to develop nurturing environments to support early childhood development • Child Intervention Support: Early intervention services, family enhancement, financial assistance for young adults (18-24) who were involved with child intervention services Alberta Works • Employment services help unemployed Albertans explore their career and training options and find jobs. Access to courses, help writing resumes, preparing for interviews, available career opportunities, etc.) • Income support provides financial assistance to Albertans who do not have the resources to meet their basic needs, like food, clothing and shelter • How much and how often is provided to meet basic needs is standard and defined by legislation. Alberta Works employees cannot change or define the amount, they assess the situation according to legislation. Express your concern with your MLA if you disagree with this amount. • They have the ability to cover emergencies such as utilities disconnected. • Assessment of need considers: needs, income, assets, employment history, and immigration status. • Maintenance Enforcement Program: Alberta Works helps parents with limited incomes get child support agreements or court orders. Healthcare support • Provides eligible albertans with extended health coverage for prescription drugs, some over the counter medications, eye exams and glasses, dental care, emergency ambulance services, and essential diabetic supplies

Steps to resolve a dispute or concern with an Alberta Support worker 1. Ask a coworker for clarification 2. Speak with the next level of management (e.g. supervisor) 3. If necessary, submit a Notice of Appeal form (form EMP 0547A) to any Alberta Works Center or to the Appeals Secretariat.
