4. a) A glass fibre filter paper is found to have an initial weight of 8.02345 gms. After 24 hrs of sampling, using an high volume air sampler the filter paper weighed 8.16432 gms and the air flow rate at the start and the end of the experiment is 1.1 m3/min and 0.9 m3/min respectively. Calculate the concentration of suspended particulate matter. b) Explain the following : i) Representative sample ii) Sulphation rate iii) Non conventional air quality monitoring.

5. a) What are the principle gases of concern in air pollution ? Describe two major treatment processers to control these gases. 10 b) Define adsorption and differentiate between physical and chemical adsorption. Name the various types of adsorbents and their major uses in air pollution control. 10 6. a) Does induced centrifugal force help in controlling pollution ? If so, describe a system making use of this phenomenon for controlling air pollution. 10 b) Air stream with a flow rate of 7 mts/sec, is passed thro’ a cyclone of standard proportion. The dia of the cyclone is 2 mts and air temp. 77°C. Determine i) The removal efficiency for a particle of density 1.5 gms/cm3 and dia 10μm. ii) The collection efficiency based on the above it a bank of 64 cyclones with diameter of 24 cms are used instead of single large unit. 10 7. a) Explain the contact power theory as applicable to wet collection devices. Describe a device adopting this theory.
