Introduction Welcome to the first Agri-tech Newsletter of 2016. This month, we’re highlighting some of our recent digital communications activities, including our updated Agri-tech Catalyst map and a new blogpost. We also have updates on the Centres for Agricultural Innovation, details of the new Agri-food Technology Council, and we’ve highlighted a number of exciting events which have taken place recently. Hopefully you find this round-up of news and events useful, and as always, do get in touch if you have suggestions for future newsletters, including possible content.

Updated Agri-tech Catalyst map The Agri-tech Catalyst map has now been updated to include details and locations for all of the Catalyst projects funded so far, including the most recent Round 4 projects. There are now 98 Agri-tech Catalyst projects across the length and breadth of the UK, from Cornwall to the Scottish Highlands. You can click here to view the map – the projects are divided into Aquaculture (in blue), Crops (in green), Livestock (in red), and Precision Agriculture (in yellow). Click on a pin to find a description of each project and a list of the partner organisations involved. For more information on the projects funded in Round 4, please follow this link to our GOV.UK announcement. Applications for Round 5 of the Agri-tech Catalyst recently closed, and the winners will be announced later in the year.

Blog Post - Commercialising Agricultural Innovation Dina Patel and Sam White, Assistant Directors in the Agri-tech Strategy team, recently wrote a blog post on commercialising agricultural innovation. You can read it here.

Update on Centres for Agricultural Innovation In case you missed the Autumn Statement announcement last November, the Chancellor announced that Government is investing £68 million in three new centres for agricultural innovation to help translate our world-leading agricultural innovation in to commercial opportunities for UK businesses. These Centres are: 1. Centre for Crop Health and Protection (CHAP) - £21.3 million over four years to revolutionise how farmers manage crop threats including pests and disease, both in the UK and overseas. 2. Centre for Innovation Excellence in Livestock (CIEL) - £29.1 million over four years to create new livestock technology and products to boost the profitability and productivity of livestock farming. 3. Agricultural Engineering Precision Innovation Centre (Agri-EPI) - £17.7 million over four years in the new, fast-moving market of precision agriculture to help the UKs agri-food sector develop advanced technologies that will increase productivity and sustainability in UK agriculture. The three Centres will launch later in 2016, and we will of course keep you fully up to date on this exciting next step.

First meeting of the Agri-food Technology Council The Government is working alongside industry to harness the creativity and innovation of businesses along the whole of the food chain. This will be one of the core principles of the Food and Farming Plan being published later this year. Critical to our ongoing success will be an augmented Agri-tech Leadership Council – henceforth known as the Agri-food Technology Council – encompassing business leaders and experts from the th whole food chain. The first meeting of the Council was held on 14 January and details of the new members will be on the GOV.UK site soon.

Increase in students studying agriculture and related subjects th

New figures published by the Higher Education Statistics Agency on 14 January 2016 show that the number of students studying agri-food subjects has increased by 4% (for undergraduate degrees) and 29% (for postgraduate degrees) in the last year. You can view the data here: https://www.hesa.ac.uk/pr/3771-statistical-first-release-224.

Agri-Tech East’s GROW initiative GROW 2016 is an agri-tech business plan competition which aims to encourage people with an innovative concept to explore if it has the potential to become a new product or service. There is grant funding available for good ideas and many investors are interested in agri-tech solutions. In addition to the support and guidance from a mentor for every entrant, the winning entry will win £1,000, and the winner and runners-up can also choose from a number of support prizes to help them progress their business plan into practice. UKTI present at the UK's biggest machinery show The UK’s largest farm machinery, equipment and agricultural services show, LAMMA 2016, took place on 20-21 January at the East of England Showground in Peterborough, with the major manufacturers exhibiting the latest technology, machinery and products. Held in January each year, LAMMA regularly attracts up to 40,000 farmers from around the country and overseas. Luis Mulet, UKTI Agri-Tech Trade Specialist, visited the show and met with British companies to learn more about their products and services. Luis was also there to offer UKTI support to foster their exports into new markets and increase their sales in markets already established. Sara Ibtasar from UKTI Pakistan also attended highlighting the many opportunities for companies in Pakistan.

UKTI’s visit to India - promoting UK innovation overseas Over half of the world’s dairy cows live in the Indian sub-continent. Simon Doherty, UKTI Agri-Tech Specialist for Animal Health, visited India in November 2015 with visits to the National Dairy Research Institute at Karnal and the National Pig Research Institute near Guwahati. Simon also had meetings with regional government, academic representatives, and a range of companies interested in what the UK can offer in potentially game-changing agricultural technologies. There is a considerable appetite for the cutting-edge solutions – products, services and training – being offered by UK agri-tech companies. These will enable the rapidly evolving structures in the Indian livestock sector to maximise animal health, welfare and productivity; from high-merit genetics and nutritional supplementation, to on-farm mechanisation and the appropriate use of improved vaccines and pharma. If you are interested in finding out more about how UKTI helps companies looking to export overseas to countries like India, or how UKTI helps oversee companies bring their investment to the UK, or access our world leading research institutions, visit www.gov.uk/ukti.

UK-Canada Symposium on Smart Technologies for Agriculture The Science and Innovation Network in Montreal teamed up with the Canadian High Commission, UKTI, McGill University and Harper Adams University to organise a UK-Canada symposium from 17st 21 January 2016. Held in London, with a visit to the National Centre for Precision Farming, this event brought together over fifty participants including farmers, funding agencies, companies and experts from both Canada and the UK. The main topics of discussion were training, agricultural automation, satellites and on-the-go applications, agricultural inputs, precision irrigation and environmental issues. The global precision farming market is forecast to hit £2.3 billion by 2018, and in the UK the precision agriculture supply industry and innovation centres are well positioned to exploit this global challenge and be the hub for smart farming. With these transatlantic discussions in full flow, this quiet global agricultural revolution continues to gather pace.

Agri-innovation Den - Funding Opportunity Briefing Media Agriculture, in association with The Co-operative, is running an exciting competition to discover and support the best entrepreneurs in UK agriculture. The project is called the Agriinnovation Den and is looking to invest up to £250,000 in one or more technology-based concepts and start-ups in UK agriculture. This investment is open to anyone and applicants must have a concept that is based on an innovative technology, process or application. This could include software companies, app developers, and companies using farm data, mapping and weather information in an innovative way. The product could be at prototype stage or a young developing business that is looking for the next phase of development. In addition to the funding, winners will get advice and support from Briefing Media Agriculture, including mentoring in areas like marketing, buying, distribution channels, and business planning. They will also have the opportunity to trial their concept within The Co-operative Food’s farming groups. For more information, visit www.aginnovationden.com.
