Minutes of MAC AGM 22 October 2015 Attendees: Ewen Cameron (Chair) Monica Hunter Mark Gallagher Pat Allen Jim Tracy Benny Hands John Hughes Ann Hughes Scott Dickson Craig MacKenzie Lesley Ross Tracey Lamont Robert Pattinson Mae McIsaac Brian McLinden Peter Blackmore Marcus Whyte Michael Wedlock Apologies: William Martin, Bob McCrum, Jill Logan, Richard Leach, Jane Wedlock, Graeme McEwan, Brett Lawson, Phyllis Hands

AGENDA Chair’s Report Ewen Cameron (Chair) opened the meeting and thanked everyone for their attendance, in particular to the new members and to parents. Ewen advised Minutes of 2014 AGM have been on the club website for the previous 2 weeks and asked if any matters arising or points of clarification from this. No issues were noted. Minutes approved by Mark Gallagher and seconded by Jim Tracy. Ewen thanked the following:  Committee attendance at meetings and their enthusiasm and support.  Road Runner and Track and Field Coaches for team managing and the support and encouragement they give to members.  Volunteers for all their assistance.  Joe Hoolaghan and everyone involved in Time Trials and placing results on club website.  To all members over the last year, in particular to the integration across both sides this proved a sociable year.  To all parents who bring their children to training and meetings.

Ewen took this opportunity to thank the following people: John McCluskey for his support to the club over the years and also his role as a committee member Elizabeth Martin who remains an active member of the club, however, has given up her coaching role. Many thanks to Elizabeth for the years she has also given to the club. Luke McIlvenna for his coaching support. Luke is currently studying a PHD in Australia for a year. Ewen reported togetherness with the club from early summer at the Lanarkshire Track and Field Championship and thanked members who gave up their time to support the younger athletes. Ewen informed the endurance weekend in Aviemore proved successful and that it is hoped this is something the club could do more of. Ewen thanked members, parents and helpers at the Club Championships and more recently for those who assisted in the West District Cross Country Relays. Ewen informed feedback was good from Scottish Athletics, runners and officials. Ewen advised this is something we can do in the foreseeable future. Ewen stated there is an increased presence on social media and the number of views is in the 1000s which is mostly Facebook and Twitter. Ewen thanked John McParland who has taken on the role of webmaster and who regularly updates this. Ewen also thanked Reflex Blue who provided £3000 of work free of charge. Ewen advised a lot still has to be done in regards to social media and the club website and a separate subcommittee has been set up to look at this. Ewen advised one of the challenges over the past few weeks has been a need for support from members/parents to allow pressure to be taken off of others. Ewen stated one hour per week would assist if this is all people can offer and there is no requirement for specialist skills - just providing assistance would be helpful. Ewen advised the club needs more coaches and someone to look after the kit. Ewen is looking for sponsorship to the club. Ewen reported on the questionnaire sent out mid part of the summer which received 35 responses. Ewen highlighted the majority of feedback was positive and that this will allow a new plan to be developed for 2016 and to work towards a 3 year period. Dates: Prize giving – 20 November 2015, Electric Bar, Motherwell all welcome. Christmas Time Trial – 13 December 2015 Club Ceilidh – Saturday 27 February 2016. New club tent has now arrived and thanks to Lesley Ross for agreeing to store this. Ewen asked if a plan of action can be worked out to get this to all events and people to put it up and take it down properly. Ewen informed Membership fees will remain the same for 2015-2016 and may be reviewed at the AGM in 2016.

Secretary’s Report Peter thanked everyone in his first year as Club Secretary advising he is learning on the job. Thanks to Jill Logan for her handover. Peter thanked the committee and club members for getting him through this advising there is still a lot more to be done in the role. Peter advised building on succession of the club and forward planning to utilise social media in a more improved way. Peter reported to date the club have 205 members 115 adult and 90 junior members. Peter thanked John McParland for his assistance with the Website and Brett Lawson for taking over memberships. Treasurers Report Ewen reported on behalf of William advising the club is financially able to sustain all debts and can proceed forward in 2016. The informal Revenue membership peak was in March of this year. Ewen advised a fairly steady income at present and thanked Pat and Monica for collecting money on training nights. Key expenditure is entry fees including league subscriptions, facility hire at Ravenscraig and Wishaw and for a local school which will be utilised this year. Scottish Athletic fees were circa £1700. Without the steady income the club would be unable to function, subsidise cost of hoodies or provide free vests which enhance the club profile at competitions. Bank statement to end of September 2015 £6008.02. Ewen advised difference from last year was due to no further grants being obtained. Ewen anticipated the club going from strength to strength. Thanks were expressed to Jim Tracey for auditing accounts. Jim asked why subs were not being increased. Ewen stated no real need to increase subs and this is something which can be revisited next year. Joe asked how this year’s closing balance compares with this year. Ewen reported a similar balance. Ewen advised if Scottish Athletics affiliation goes up club levies will be raised. Accounts for 2015 proposed by Peter Blackmore and seconded by Ann Hughes. Track and Field Lesley Ross reported in Richie’s absence. Firstly I would like to thank all my fellow committee members for all their continued support and hard work over this past year. Motherwell AC has a very committed and hard working coaching team who I think all work very well together to make this great club even better. We are very lucky to have the opportunity to work with so many talented and well rounded athletes who give their all for our club; the club would be nothing without them all. However , huge praise and thanks has to go to our very patient track and field coaching team, all volunteering their own time, so thanks to Bob, Adele, Jill, Lesley , Steven, Craig, William , Jamie , Amanda and newbie Vicki Wright. We are always looking for more volunteers!! The season as ever starts with a mixture of cross country, indoor league and indoor nationals. MAC picked up several medals at national and school level last season. The indoor league is a good chance for our youngsters to get their first taste of competing and of course being sick on the track with a captive audience! A lot of great performances and personal bests were achieved by many of our athletes.

www.motherwellac.com Page 3 of 9

Cross country gives a great chance for the roadrunners to train and race with the track and field middle distance runners and sees some real talented runners, see the future of the club. It is fantastic for the two sides of the club to come together and benefit from each other's talent and experience, also a great chance for track and field to see what an amazing job John Hughes does for the club. Who can forget the cross country nationals last season, a fantastic but brutally tough end to the cross country season? We all expected Chris McDonald to be the fastest thing across the course in MAC colours, who would have thought that it would actually be the new club tent!! We had an up and down outdoor league season, some fantastic performances, some late call offs, some horrendous weather but most of all, a great team effort from start to finish from all coaches and athletes. Well done everyone. We also took part in the youth development league, part of team North Lanarkshire with Airdrie Harriers and Cumbernauld AC, again reaching the national finals and the U17's winning division 1 for the second year in a row. Without the help of volunteers and parents like Monica Hunter, the club wouldn't exist; we always need extra help, even if it's just small. Every little thing counts. The track and field has moved forward in the last year with new groups emerging to give better quality training. We, the coaches are committed to helping and supporting all our athletes to be the best they can be. It's a fantastic club to be part of. Season 2014/15 saw the continuing success of our Master Sprinters - Alan Robertson M35, for the 3rd year running winning indoor 60m, 200m & Long Jump Gold medals and Jim Smith M70 Gold in the 200m, Silver in the Long Jump at Scottish Championships. This success continued during the outdoor season at District, Scottish and British level. Jim in one day collected 3 sprint titles and a Long Jump Silver including 2 sprint PB's. Alan on the same day collected 200 & Long Jump titles & 100m Silver - All PB's. Fiona Steele W50 is a newcomer to the Sprint group but also added to the MAC medal tally by winning the 100m at Scottish Championships. Stephen Ross also found success this year with his first major medal at the West District Championships - Bronze 200m despite being only 6th fastest on paper. A superb bend run put everyone else under pressure - he just missed out on the Silver. A week later he ran a super PB in 22.6. MAC sprinters have performed well throughout in season in SAIL, CSSAL and YDL. We are very lucky to have such a great group of youngsters in our club. Thank you from Richie and all the coaching staff. Mark Gallagher asked why there was no representation at the West District Cross Country from Track and Field. Lesley stated she was unsure as she does not train this group although mentioned it could have been due to this being held at the start of the school holiday. Marcus Whyte asked if any junior members will be moving up to senior level. Lesley advised this is something to be discussed with Richie. Craig stated some of the senior Track and Field members participate in individual cross country events.

Road Runners Report

Joe Hoolaghan reported it has been another successful season for the Road Running Section at the Motherwell AC. This report is not a comprehensive one but it does provide an overview of a number of the key areas of activity within the Road Running Section. Road Running Sub-Committee We appointed Joe Hoolaghan as chair of the Road Runners Sub-Committee and opened up participation to all of our Road Runners who wished to get involved. We had a good number of volunteers (continuing and new) on the sub- committee; too many too mention. The subcommittee met on several occasions early in the season and set up a facebook group and an email group to progress ongoing issues. Early in the season we: * Assigned the races for the Cross Country season * Pulled together the races for the Road Race Championship and Leagues * Reviewed the rules for Cross Country, RR Championship and Time Trial Cross Country In the Cross Country Championship we had a total of 23 men and 8 women participating this year with an average of 10 men and 4 women taking part in each of the 8 races. Since the last AGM the Cross Country Championship has concluded with Craig Mackenzie, Chris Macdonald, and Nick Hughes taking the first three places in the men’s and Clare Hughes, Phyllis Hands and Jo Clark winning the women’s medals. Once again thanks to, Phyllis and Benny Hands who co-ordinated the cross country (and road relays) entries and teams over the course of the season. Time Trial In the Trial Championship we averaged 26 Road Runners (17 men and 9 women) per race in the 10 races so far this season, with a maximum turnout of 32 runners taking part in the August Time trial. Since the last AGM, Gary Lines won the men’s championship and Tracey Lamont won the women’s. Road Racing We have had another successful Road Racing Championship with record numbers (32 Road Runners) participating in the March Strathclyde Parkrun and the Brian Goodwin 10K in June. Since the last AGM, Phyllis Hands, Vicki Wright, and Lesley Ross took the first three places in the Championship, and Chris Macdonald, Nick Hughes, and Graeme Kennedy took the first three places in the men’s. Road Runner of the Year In December, Brian McLinden and Gary Lines were voted joint Road Runner of the Year by their fellow athletes.

Marathon Participation 20 of our Road Runners have competed in marathons throughout world including Edinburgh, Manchester, Nottingham, London, Berlin and Chicago. Nigel Hetherington is set to run the Everest Marathon in November. Training Training schedules are discussed, reviewed and produced by the Road Runners Coaches on a regular basis. Training continues to be well attended by our Road Runners at the sessions set out in the bi-monthly training schedule with numbers reaching up to 30 on a Tuesday evening, and hill sessions at Baron’s Haugh Bird Sanctuary were especially well attended this year. The coaches recently attended an education session at Cambuslang Harriers on ‘Preparing for the Nationals’ where Freya Murray and Mark Pollard (both multiple Scottish National Cross Country Champions) gave very impressive talks on the subject. Other Road Runners’ Events * We had another successful club day out at Bute Highland Games with over 50 people (including family and friends) making the trip to Rothesay for the day and weekend. * Guest runs such as the ‘Countryside Run’ in Stirling * The ‘Training Weekend’ at Glenmore Lodge in Aviemore had excellent feedback * Our Road Runners enjoyed the ‘evening out’ to the Brian Goodwin 10K at Pollock Park which equalled our best ever turnout for a championship race Individual and Team Achievements This is a selection of the achievements by the Road Runners, and is not exhaustive. To anyone I have missed out, please accept my apologies. * Mark Paterson winning the Strathaven Half Marathon * Jo Clark’s silver medal representing Great Britain at the European Duathlon Championships in Madrid * Our female team picked up silver medal at the Scottish Veterans Harriers Club Road Relays at Strathclyde Park in January * Clare Barr represented Great Britain in the 800m at the World Masters Athletics Championships in Lyon, won gold in 800m at indoors at the Scottish Masters and bronze in the 800m indoors at the British Masters * Phyllis Hands won gold in both the indoors and outdoors 3,000m Scottish Masters and was 1st W60 in the Great Scottish Run 10K * William Martin won gold in the 300m Hurdles, and silver in the 400m and 200m at the Scottish Masters outdoor championships * Benny Hands picked up a bronze medal in the 1,500m at Scottish Masters indoors

* Tracey Lamont won 1st W40 in the Dumfries Half Marathon * Patricia Allen won 1st W65 at the Balfron 10K and Tom Scott 10 mile road races * Chris Macdonald and Clare Hughes took 1st male and 1st female places in Victoria 5K Parkrun * Craig Mackenzie and Clare Hughes took 1st male and 1st female places in the Tollcross 5K Parkrun * The Senior Women’s A Team took the Gold Medal, and the Senior Women’s B Team took the Bronze Medal at the Lanarkshire Road Relays at Drumpellier Park on 17 Road Runners Coaching Report 2015 John Hughes reported the club is in a healthy position at present with a total of 8 coaches working with the Road Runners. Throughout the year we have also had a total of 10 coaches who are, or have been, Road Runners assisting with the T&F Groups. The most recent recruit is Vicki Wright. It is really pleasing to witness the whole club approach being adopted by the Road Runners, with regards to club coaching. However we will continue to encourage new coaches during the year, especially to help with the juniors. At present training is mainly long steady runs, as we aim to progressively build our aerobic endurance base. From November, on Tuesdays, we will start to introduce hill sessions, interval sessions and fartleks. The Saturday sessions will continue with the cross country efforts through to March. We will then introduce more speed by switching to the track in April. During the year we have developed our Thursday evening sessions to include Tempo runs and Progressive runs, once per month. This will be followed by either circuits or a Pilate’s session, led by Mae. We also had a number of Yoga sessions recently, led by former club member Carol Munro. These were well received and proved a welcome variation in our training. During the year we had two excellent Guest Runs. One at Coalburn, led by Peter and one at Stirling, led by Davie Armour. Both events were well attended and enjoyable club away days. As always, we are looking for other Guest Run suggestions. One of the highlights of the year was the Endurance weekend at Glenmore Lodge. We had a great response from the club. The weekend included some lovely runs, great presentations and a chance to socialise with club members in a relaxed atmosphere. The location and facilities were superb and a massive vote of thanks should go to Ewen Cameron for organising this. Hopefully this can become a regular feature. I would also like to mention the support given by the Road Runners throughout the year. A large number of our athletes stayed on to help at the club track championships and we also had a large turnout to assist at the Lanarkshire track championships. More recently we hosted the West District Cross Country Relays at Hamilton Racecourse. Almost 30 Road Runners attended on the Saturday to help set up the course and on the Sunday over 30 helped organise and marshal the event. We had very positive feedback from athletes on the day and Scottish Athletics have also congratulated us on how well the event was organised. This was a tremendous effort from the Road Runners and has clearly displayed what an exceptional, forward thinking and friendly club we are.
