ADVANCED GLOBAL HEALTH ANTH 4411/5511 eISU Spring 2018 Elizabeth Cartwright RN, PhD Professor, Anthropology
[email protected] The focus of this class is to critically explore some of the most pressing issues in Global Health facing our world today. We will read cutting edge works on major health issues that include intractable problems such as highly resistant strains of TB, and new problems such as the burgeoning presence of chronic conditions in low resource countries. What kinds of programs work in these situations? Why do they fail? We will question how and when “evidence and data” are used with both positive and negative results. Using short ethnographic case studies we’ll look into how traditional medicine and biomedicine are being used and how they are influencing one another. We will critically explore humanitarian interventions and disaster relief from several different perspectives. This class will build on topics covered in both ANTH 2239 Health and Illness in Latin America and Global Health ANTH 4407/5507. It is helpful to have had one or both of these courses but they are not required as pre-requisites.
