Correspondence/Recognition – Beecher Junior High Spelling Team, Scholastic Bowl, and Math Team B. Open Forum was held on Monday, May 2, 2016. There are no future “Open Forums” scheduled at this time. C. Meet & Greet for Mrs. Nicole Black, elementary principal beginning July 1, 2016 to be held at the Beecher Elementary Library on May 18, 2016. The district staff is invited from 3:30 to 5 pm. Parents and community members are invited to meet Mrs. Black from 5:30 to 7:30 pm. D. Misallocation of Personal Property Replacement Tax E. Property Tax Information F. The Facilities Committee recommends to the full Board of Education upgrades to the High School Library for a total of $6,000. B. Curriculum i. The Curriculum Committee recommends to the full Board of Education the purchase of a primary reading curriculum for Beecher Elementary with Title I carryover funds.
C. Finance i. The Finance Committee recommends to the full Board the purchase of PowerSchool Registration at a cost of $2,887 plus the one time enrollment of $1,650. ii. The Finance Committee recommends to the full Board to enter into an agreement for electronic payments for parents with E-Funds at no cost to the district. iii. The Finance Committee recommends to the full Board the adjustments to the High School Foods fee to $25 and the Home Economics fee to $20. iv. The Finance Committee recommends to the full Board the outlined procedures from above when requesting a fan bus. v. The Finance Committee recommends to the full Board the agreement with Grant Park School District to maintain the co-op with wrestling. vi. The Finance Committee recommends to the full Board the purchase of three servers, one for each building in the district. 12. FRESHMAN ORIENTATION
Beecher High School completed an Eighth Grade Orientation Night on Wednesday, April 20 that was attended by 38 people. A variety of topics related to transitioning into high school such as the counseling program, scheduling, grades, standardized testing, and strategies for success were covered. Senior Abigail Wilson presented to incoming freshmen on how be successful in high school and beyond. BAND CONTEST
On Saturday, April 16, Beecher High School’s Concert Band participated in the Illinois High School Association (IHSA) Organization Contest – a performance that is judged by a panel of highly qualified, master music educators and ensemble directors. Of a possible five division rankings that can be assigned for scoring purposes, the Concert Band earned a Division I Superior rating – the highest possible score. SKILLS USA
Four Beecher High School students in Kankakee Area Career Center (KACC) participated in Skills USA – a state-wide career and technical education (CTE) competition – this year: Zachary Deubel ’16 (Carpentry), Justin Lester ’16 (Electrical Wiring), Mitchell Schurman ‘17 (Welding), and Jordan Volek ’16 (Collision Repair). Justin placed fourth, Jordan finished fifth, and Mitchell’s team earned a silver medal. MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS
On Monday, April 25, Beecher High School hosted a Mental Health Awareness Soccer Game. Students wore lime green t-shirts, decorated the school building and grounds, and participated in an assembly during which community member Kayla Dousias spoke about the importance of recognizing, talking about, and bringing awareness to invisible mental health issues such as depression and anxiety. Many Beecher community businesses also participated by decorating their buildings with green ribbons. ADVANCED PLACEMENT
This year, 63 Beecher High School students are completing a total of 98 Advanced Placement (AP) exams in seven content areas: AP Biology, AP Calculus AB, AP Computer Science A, AP English Language & Composition, AP English Literature & Composition, AP United States History, and AP World History. AP exams are being held in the basement community room of Midland States Bank and proctored by two retired District 200U teachers: Mrs. Mary Burdick and Mr. Darryl Janusek. 1
EARLY COLLEGE INITIATIVE Six Beecher High School juniors have expressed interest in participating in the recently approved Early College Initiative (ECI) at Prairie State College (PSC). These individuals will be completing college placement tests in English, Mathematics, and Reading; attending a summer orientation at PSC; and completing a total of 16 semester hours of college credit during the 2016-2017 academic year that will also be reported in Beecher High School official transcripts. Psychology and college-level mathematics courses such as Calculus, Statistics, and College Algebra are among the electives that will be taken by ECI students in addition to the senior English and Physical Education graduation requirements. CAREER FAIR
Beecher High School’s 4th Annual Career Fair was held on Friday, April 22. This year, students participated in five 25-minute sessions with professionals from various fields such as pharmacy, banking, pipefitting, health care, social work, dietetics, cosmetology, accounting, engineering, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Sessions were interspersed with career advice from Mr. Steve Sarsany (Guidance Counselor) and Mr. Nathan Schilling (Principal) read over the public address system. IMPORTANT DATES
