ADOBE TRAINING, PHOTOSHOP CS6 BASICS: CORRECTING IMAGES Photoshop has many sophisticated tools to correct/replace areas in images that may be damaged or unwanted. In this tutorial you will learn to: • • • •

Use the Spot Healing Brush Tool to retouch small areas in images Use the Patch Tool to retouch areas in images using specific sources Use the Cloning tool to duplicate areas for easy correction Use the Content-Aware Move Feature to move/fill selections in images

The Spot Healing Brush Tool The Spot Healing Brush Tool can be used to clean up small unwanted marks from an image. The brush removes the marks selected by replacing it with a sample from the pixels around the area, matching the texture, tone and lighting as accurately as possible.

Step One: Open the image and add a (1) New layer to the project. All of the corrections will be made on the new layer to protect the original image.

Step Two: With the (1) new layer selected in the layers pane, choose the Spot Healing Brush Tool from the Toolbar.

Step Three: Use the Tool Options Bar to set the Spot Healing Brush Tool settings. Brush Size - will vary based on the size of the area for correction. The hardness settings at 100% and the spacing at 25% will work in most cases. Note: Really larger areas should not be corrected with the Spot Healing Tool. Try the Patch Tool instead. Proximity Match - will use the pixels in the area to make a match in the correction. Create Texture - can be used in situations where there are not enough "good" pixels around the area to be healed. Photoshop will try to create its own good texture when this option is selected. (1) Content-Aware - Photoshop will replace the area selected by the brush with what it thinks should be there if the unwanted object is removed. This is often the most effective and quickest method of spot healing images. (2) Sample All Layers - this must be selected if you are trying to preserve the original image by making corrections on separate layer, as we are demonstrating in this tutorial.

Step Four: Carefully left-hand click the brush/click on the areas that you want to replace. The brush can be clicked or dragged over an area to make a correction. Adjust the Tool Bar Options to get the desired effect. Tips: Use the the keyboard shortcuts and tool to quickly move around in the image to make corrections. • • • •

Control (Command in MAC) + / - to zoom in and out of the image. Left/Right Brackets [ ] to adjust the brush size. Hand Tool to move the image around in the workspace. Use Click SHIFT Click to create a straight line selection. This is good for removing wires, fences or other straight objects.

The Patch Tool The Patch Tool can be used for replacing unwanted areas in an image. The Patch Tool works by using a selected area to "patch" or replace the unwanted area.

Step Three: Use the Tool Options Bar to set the Spot Healing Brush Tool settings. (1) Content Aware - Photoshop will replace the area selected by the patch with what it thinks should be there if the unwanted object is removed. Adaptation - refers to how specific Photoshop applies Content Aware sampling to fill-in the area. Adjust this setting before or after applying the patch to get the best effect. (2) Sample All Layers - this must be selected if you are trying to preserve the original image by making

corrections on separate layer, as we are demonstrating in this tutorial. Note: You can use the (3) selection tool options to add/subtract to the selection area for the patch.

Step Four: By left-hand clicking carefully select the area in your image to replace with the patch.

Step Five: Left-click and drag the selection to the area you want to serve as the patch to replace the area. Notice as you drag that the original selection will be replaced with the new area or "patch" you select in the image (in this case the plant is replaced with grass). Let go of the mouse button to accept the patch.

Notice that in the corrected image the road, rocks and the large plant have been replaced with a grass. Also one cow had the brown spots removed using a patch of white.

Clone Stamp Tool The Clone Stamp Tool works by selecting a source area in the image to "clone" and then stamp elsewhere in the image. It can be used for correction or to add/enhance an image.

Step One: Open the image and select the (1) Clone Stamp Tool from the Toolbar. In this image we are going to use the Clone Stamp Tool to replace the cloud that is covering the mountain.

Step Two: To select the area you want to copy (i.e. clone) from, move your mouse to the area you want to duplicate and Alt-click (PC)/Option-click (Mac) on that part of the image. The cursor will change to a target. Note: Click the spot you want to start copying from.

Step Three: Release the Alt or Option key and adjust the Clone Stamp Tool settings in the (1) Tool Options Bar. Pay particular attention to the (2) Brush Size and (3) Style to control the cloning effect.

Step Two: With the (1) new layer selected in the layers pane, choose the Content-Aware Move Tool from the Toolbar.

Step Three: Use the Tool Options Bar to set the Content-Aware Move Tool settings. Mode - move will take a selection and move it to another area (erasing and filling the area) while the extend mode will extend the selection to the new area (copying and keeping the original in place). We are using Move for this example. Adaptation - refers to how specific Photoshop applies Content Aware sampling to fill-in the area. Adjust this setting before or after applying the tool to get the best effect. (1) Sample All Layers - this must be selected if you are trying to preserve the original image by making corrections on separate layer, as we are demonstrating in this tutorial.

Note: You can use the (2) selection tool options to add/subtract to the selection area for the Content-Aware move.

Step Four: Left-hand click and carefully draw a selection around the object you want to move in the image.

Step Five: Left-click and drag the selection to the new location in the image. After you let go of the image Photoshop will process the Content-Aware to backfill the area the selection was moved from.
