VOLUNTEERING IN OUR SCHOOLS (KT) The Board supports and encourages parent(s)/guardian(s) and community members to volunteer in our schools. Volunteering is an effective means for community members to become informed and engaged. The Board also recognizes its responsibility to minimize disruptions to the instructional program and to maintain a safe environment for students and staff. Persons interested in serving as volunteers should first contact a school principal to explore opportunities. Volunteers work only at the request and under the direction of school staff. Prior to working in the schools, persons interested in becoming volunteers must complete an application process, which includes a national background check at their own cost. Verified volunteer status in the District is approved for the time the volunteer’s background check is valid. Persons who wish to volunteer in the schools after that time must reapply and submit a new background check at their own cost. Each time a volunteer works, he/she must check in at the school office and be logged into the visitor management system to receive a visitor’s badge, and must return to the office at the end of each assignment to turn in their badge and check out. Persons inquiring about volunteer opportunities will be directed to the Volunteering Page on the District website. Adopted November 21, 2016

Procedures Persons interested in volunteering in the schools will follow these steps for approval: 1. Go to the Ames Community School District website at http://www.ames.k12.ia.us/district/departments/administration/volunteering/ 2. Click on “Apply to Become a Volunteer”. 3. Submit information for a background check. Make payment of $12.50 to administer this background check. District staff who have administrative privileges to the online background check approval system will follow up with volunteer applicants at the direction of the principals. Upon approval, the applicant will receive a verification email and an official Volunteer Card. Volunteers must bring their verification card to the school office every time they volunteer.
