Poetry Studies (86) Thursdays 11:00 AM – 1:0 PM ● 4 weeks beginning 2/11/16 Poetry Studies will seek to increase a class member’s knowledge of and enthusiasm about reading, researching and even writing poetry. Class will include light homework. Enthusiastic and positive participation from individuals is encouraged with a mind to everyone having an opportunity to share thoughts and ideas. Expect to be part of a class writing of poetry. Expect to share your own verse in a safe and friendly environment. Class size limited to 10. Week 1

Each class will start with announcements and the reading of a poem. Class member introduction. Assessment of class skill level. Discussion of such things as Basic elements of poetry, (meter, rhyming, style). The class will have a hand in the direction of discussion. Homework for next time will be to bring a poem to read and discuss (each student.) Plus two poems will be assigned to study and be ready to discuss as a group. Fun activity to inspire creativity TBD.

Week 2

Announcements and poem reading. Group reading and discussion of two homework poems. Discussion of elements of a poem, including Subject, Tone, Emotion, Goal, Style, Cadence, Rhyme Scheme. Reading of poems brought in by individuals. Discussion. Attempt to write a poem as a group. Fun activity TBD. Homework - bring in another poem. Study two assigned poems. Announcement of poetry writing contest for last session.

Week 3

Announcements and poem reading. Group reading and discussion of two homework poems. Reading of poems brought in by individuals, discussion. Writing poetry as a group. Fun activity. Homework: read and be ready to discuss two assigned poems. Bring in a poem you would like to read and discuss. Reminder about poetry writing contest. Fun activity TBD.

Week 4

Announcements and poem reading. Group read and discussion of assigned poems. Reading of poems brought in by individuals. Poetry contest. Reading, discussing, awards and recognition.

Phil Sneve was born and raised in Duluth. He worked as a banker for 30+ years, and developed an enthusiasm for poetry that he would like to instill in others.
