Middle School Programs Building Healthy Core Learning 6th Grade Science, Unit 4
6th Grade UNIT 4 OVERVIEW: Space Invaders Unit Outcomes At the end of this unit, your student should be able to: Describe how the interaction of the sun, moon and Earth causes the seasons, tides, eclipses, and moon phases. Explain why Earth can sustain life based on its type of surface, gravitational force and location to the sun. Explain why other planets do not appear to sustain life based on their properties and their locations to the sun. Summarize how space exploration has allowed us to increase our scientific knowledge and benefit from technological advancements.

Key Standards Addressed
Where This Unit Fits
Connections to Common Core/NC Essential Standards 6.E.1.1 Explain how the relative motion and relative position of the sun, Earth, and moon affect the seasons, tides, phases of the moon and eclipses.
Connections to prior and future learning Coming into this unit, students should have a strong foundation in: Understanding the cause of day and night based on the rotation of Earth on its axis. Describing monthly changes in the appearance of the moon based on the moon’s orbit around the Earth. Recognizing Earth as part of a system called the Solar System including the sun, planets, and many moons.
6.P.1.2 Explain why Earth sustains life while other planets do not based on their properties (including types of surface, atmosphere and gravitations force) and location to the Sun. 6.P.1.3 Summarize space exploration and the understandings gained from them.
This unit builds to the following future skills and concepts: Predict weather conditions and patterns based on information obtained from: weather data collected from direct observations and measurement; weather maps, satellites and radar; and cloud shapes and types and associated elevation.
