AP Latin Summer Assignment 2017 - Vergil and Caesar For a successful year in Latin AP, you need to be familiar with as much of the material as possible. To that end, here’s what you need to do: 1. Read the whole story of Vergil’s Aeneid (in English). Find an English version of the Aeneid, and read it carefully and thoughtfully, taking notes as you read (see #2), not afterwards. A respected version is The Aeneid, by Vergil, translated by Robert Fagles, Penguin Classics. Other options are translations by: Sarah Ruden, Robert Fitzgerald, C. Day Lewis, David West (prose), Rolfe Humphries, Allen Mandalbaum (my favorite). Do a little research to find one that you think you will like. I like paperback books, so I can mark in them, but you may choose a format that works for you. 2. Take notes on the Aeneid as you read it. In a separate notebook (not in the book), take notes on each of the 12 Books (chapters) as you read them, with at least two to four pages per book. Use bullets to make your notes easy to study later. Devise a system to keep track of characters as they appear or speak, such as highlighting or writing names in the margins. This notebook will be due in the fall, and will prove very useful to you as we work through the Aeneid. The AP exam assumes that you have full knowledge of the book, even if you did not read all of it in Latin. Detailed reading quizzes will occur in the first few classes in the fall. 3. Master the Latin vocabulary of Vergil and Caesar. It is important to know by heart the basic vocabulary made available in the glossary of the textbooks you will be using. You know most of these words already, but you need to make sure you know them backwards and forwards. Here is a pdf of the Aeneid list, and here is a link to a Quizlet Aeneid file of all of the words, and a Quizlet Caesar file of those words. You will be quizzed on these words throughout the year, so it is important for you to learn them now. If you have any questions, please e-mail me:
