The first five in “5 + 5” refers to the habit of making five minutes, preferably immediately following each class session, to review the notes you just took. Through this process of review you are helping to commit the information to memory, while giving yourself an opportunity to fill in any blanks that you may have missed during the lecture, or to jot down additional thoughts. Incorporating your own thoughts and language into your notes can be a useful strategy to increase your understanding of lecture material.
For the second five in “5 + 5”, arrive at least five minutes prior the start of each lecture to review the notes you took in the previous class.
