SUPPORT STAFF POSITIONS The District, in its commitment to excellence in education, has established support staff positions for secretarial, custodial/maintenance, technology, health associates and educational assistant personnel. The purpose of these positions is to provide support to students and certified staff to achieve the mission of the District. The working hours for support staff employees are determined by the department director, principal, or central office administrator and specified in the support staff working agreement. The level of staffing for these positions is established annually as part of the budget process. Adopted September 15, 1997

A break of 15 minutes in mid-morning and mid-afternoon is allowed if work permits. The administrator or department director is responsible for assuring that the break does not result in an unattended office or telephone. When there are two or more secretaries in an office, breaks shall be staggered. Administrators and secretaries affected by this policy will be informed of specific beginning and ending dates each school year by the Personnel Office. If secretaries are to work times other than those stated by the Personnel Office, administrators should consult with and notify the Personnel Office and the Payroll Department in the Business ADMINISTRATIVE RULES

Office. Payment for extended work days will be prorated in a manner consistent with the employee’s contracted hourly wage. Educational Assistants Regular Education Assistants Special Education Assistants An educational assistant shall be defined as an employee who, in the presence or absence of an instructional professional staff member, but under the direction, supervision, and control of the instructional professional staff, supervises students on a monitorial or service basis and works with students in a supportive role under conditions determined by the instructional professional staff responsible for the students, but not as a substitute for, or a replacement of functions and duties of a teacher. See 281 Iowa Administrative Code 12.4(9) Hours for educational assistants are determined by the administrator and specified in the support staff working agreement. Special education educational assistants will be assigned as mandated or as needed to assist students and programs. Technology Staff Information Technicians Information Manager Media Technologists Hours for information technicians and technologists are determined by the Director of Technology and specified in their support staff working agreement. Health Associates A health associate is a certified medical assistant or licensed health care professional hired to assist the school nurse with assigned tasks and to provide support necessary to ensure the safe and efficient operation of building health services.
