Coloane Village, Macau

T

here were once two islands in Macau. Taipa, the island in the middle, is linked to the Macau Peninsula by three bridges. The outer island, Coloane, was connected to Taipa by a causeway that cut through swampland. A major reclamation project turned the causeway to a boulevard with casinos and hotels flanking both sides. This area is commonly referred to as the Cotai Strip. With the completion of the project, Taipa and Coloane is now one island. Coloane is known for its beaches, country park and holiday resort. As to the main Coloane Village, it has not been caught up by the breakneck development in the SAR. Opposite the village across the river is Hengqin Island. Once residents over there were able to come to the village by kai-to (small passenger ferry) to shop. After the handover, the entry checkpoint was closed and the pier is now a good fishing spot. In 2009, Hengqin became China’s third special economic district and University of Macau later leased a plot of land on the island to build its new campus. The position of the new campus allowed it to be connected directly to Macau by an underwater tunnel. Coloane Village, in spite of its close proximity to Hengqin, is unaffected. It is still an idyllic place to visit that is far away from the betting crowd in Macau. Toponymy, the study of the names of a place, is academic in tone but can be fascinating when taking a walk around Coloane Village. Some of the names of alleys and lanes may help one to glimpse back in time, imagining what the once prosperous village was like. First, we begin with the main commercial street, which is called Rua dos Negociantes (Merchant Street 客商街). One related phrase from the word negociantes is ‘negócio da China’. It means easy money and vividly illustrates one simple

reason for Portuguese merchants to travel half way round the world to the Orient. The village also provided what the fishermen needed. So, we have Caminho da Cordo’aria (Rope Making St. 打纜街 ), Rua do Estaiciro (Shipyard St. 船鋪街), Travessa da Pipa (Wooden Barrel Alley 水桶巷). There is also Travessa do Balichão (Shrimp Paste Lane 鹹蝦巷). Balichão is a condiment used in Macanese, Cantonese and South East Asian cuisines. Another interesting name is Travessa do Penacho (Chicken Feather Alley 雞毛巷). Maybe, chicken feather dusters were once produced here. Yet the most intriguing street names to come across are Travessa das Lindas (Beauty Alley 美人巷) and Azinhaga dos Amores (Lover Lane 情人街). Is it possible a romantic story can be traced back in time? Coloane used to be a popular hideout for pirates. In 1910, pirates kidnapped seven Catholic school children for a large ransom. This prompted the Church and the Macau government to take decisive action to free the children and eradicate the pirates.
