30 November 2016 Tena tatou katoa e te whanau Dobar dahn, Nabad, Hola, Ciao, Ni hao, Namaste, Talofa, Bonjour, Χαιρετίσματα, Gruß, Zdravím, Приветствия, สวัสดี, Sawasdee, Konnichiwa, Pozdrowenia, Selamlar Mantra of Innovative Learning Learning anytime, anywhere, any how The staff’s appreciation is extended to our whanau who could attend the hui/meeting on Monday for parents of students where English is a second language. For a number of our parents and students, English is their third or fourth language. So whilst their English is less proficient in the interim; their bilingualism and multilingualism is a huge advantage and asset. Globalisation means bilingual and multilingual people are advantaged. It was pleasing to see so many whanau at the community hui last evening discussing and debating the benefits and challenges of the modern learning environment practice (MLeP/ aka ILeP). Matairangi Clyde Quay (MCQS) has practised much of what is known as MLeP/ILeP for a long time. Indeed the school’s whakapapa/history, has diverse teaching practice and multiculturalism at its core. In the 1960s-1980s (in particular) MCQS was the place student teachers students came for their ‘multicultural experience’ which has not changed much. As I pointed out in the hui last night, 40% of our students come with their mother tongue. In addition, if these students remain with us for at least 4 consecutive years (exceptionalities aside) they do just as well or even better than their Kiwi counterparts. Like you, staff puts a lot of effort into accommodating such evenings. We know there are still a number of questions about MLeP/ILeP. The school will continue to engage with the community to address matters and to also celebrate the successes of what’s on offer and there are many. Talent Quest There’s lots of excitement and children have been practising for some time. It’s always enthralling and the anticipation is quite nerve racking for contestants. Robert Stewart (caretaker), Annette Forbes (librarian) Hana Bright (teacher aide) will judge the contestants. Good luck to all of them! Student Reports Staff is in the process of writing reports and I have the privilege of reading all 259 (at the latest count). I do find it rewarding reading about our tamariki; their respective progress and talents. Reports are scheduled for issue Friday week, 9 December. Emergency Preparedness A reminder to our whanau to share your emergency plans with the family. Here’s another helpful link so check it out Tsunami Zone again here’s the link to the school’s emergency procedures Emergency Response & Evacuation Policy.
