CORPUS CHRISTI CATHOLIC CHURCH

is about our relationship with God and offers us a  specialLent opportunity to grow in our relationship and deepen our  commitment to a way of life that is grounded in our baptism. This  mystery of Lent affords us the opportunity to experience God’s  great glory and love. Lent reminds us to review one of the most  important foundations of our discipleship: the commitment to prayer.   Sometimes, we might think that the point of prayer is to   impress God, or to fulfill an obligation or even to convince him  into loving us. In truth, we cannot tell the Father anything he does  not already know, and he loves us deeply. What the Lord desires  from us is not words or sacrifices like the pagans, but rather pure  and faithful hearts. The prophets of the Old Testament, the author of the Psalms and Jesus, himself, tell us that God wants fidelity  more than he wants grand gestures or fancy prayers. This calls to  mind the importance of worshiping God regularly at weekly Mass  and living in peace with our neighbors near and far.   The fact that you are at Mass today implies that you know  the importance of giving glory to God by participating in the Holy  Sacrifice of the Mass. You probably know someone who used to to Mass here or does not attend weekly Mass regularly.  come Perhaps you could invite them to come with you next week? How  wonderful it would be if you took a moment to share with this  person that you love going to Mass not just because it fulfills  God’s command, but because of what it does for you. You know  you need help from God to be the best person you can be, and weekly Mass is a special place to get special grace – special help  from God to help you with all of life’s difficulties.   Mass does not make problems go away. But it does help us  get through life’s struggles with a sense of peace. Plus, it can  make the good times even better because our joy is enhanced  when we know that our relationship with God is solid.   Lent is God’s gift to us and gives us a springtime for the soul; it is time to grow spiritually by journeying through Lent this   year with deep, fervent, and faithful prayer.   In peace,   Fr. THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT

MARCH 23, 2014

March 23, 2014   First Reading:   Exodus 17:3-7 (28A)     Second Reading:   Romans 5:1-2, 5-8     Gospel Reading:   John 4:42, 15     “If you knew the gift of God and who is saying to you ‘Give me   a drink,’ you would have asked him and he would have given   you living water.” The Samaritan completely misunderstood Jesus was asking at the well. He was asking that she   what understand the “gift of God’ already given to her. He was   offering her living water, His very self, a divine encounter that   she may give testimony to “the Christ.” The source of our own   living water is found in the baptismal font. We “thirst” when we   distance ourselves from Christ and choose our own will over God’s. We are challenged to acknowledge our sinfulness and   find a new Life in Christ – that is the challenge of Lent – it is the   change required of us.   Adult: Do your actions and words testify to Jesus as the “savior   of the world”? Do you “thirst” for a divine encounter with Him?   Youth: Do you see Jesus in others? How? When? Do you talk   about it to a friend? SCRIPTURE READINGS FOR NEXT WEEKEND     First Reading:   1 Samuel 16:1b, 6-7, 10-13a (31A)     Second Reading:   Ephesians 5:8-14     Gospel Reading:   John 9:1 6-9, 13-17, 34-38       BOOK COLLECTION

BOOK CLUB

The Corpus Christi book club is currently reading "Encountering Jesus in Word, Sacraments, and Works of Charity" by Monsignor Peter Vaghi. Msgr. Vaghi tells us that we can encounter and obtain a deeper understanding of Jesus by reading scripture and, if our hearts and minds are open His word can transform us.   We can also encounter Jesus in the sacraments. In Baptism we become a Christian and, as we get older, we begin our walk with Jesus who calls us to follow him. In Penance we encounter a loving and merciful Jesus who never tires of forgiving us. In the Eucharist, we encounter the living Jesus under the appearance of bread and wine. Msgr. Vaghi also tells us that we can encounter Jesus by helping those in need whose true face, once uncovered, is the face of Jesus himself. Our book club will meet at Corpus Christi on Thursday, April 3rd, in rooms 4 & 5. Please read Msgr. Vaghi's book and join us for a discussion.
