Experiencing the Arts was pleased to sponsor transportation for 29 Mascoma students and chaperones for a culturally rich tour of Montreal. Members of the Biology and French Clubs spent two days in Montreal. Friday, May 13th a guided walking tour took us through historic squares, landmarks, and through some historic and beautiful buildings including their beautiful Notre Dame. We also explored Montreal Museum of Fine Art which featured their permanent collection and the travelling Pompeii exhibition. Our spirits stayed high despite walking many miles getting soggy in the rain. Our beautiful sunny Saturday was our Science Day exploring the Bio Dome, Insectarium, green houses, gardens, and the tower of the Olympic Village. We ended with an exploration of their “Underground” - miles and miles of shops and subway stops that seemed to go on forever in all directions and vertically for about six floors. We stayed at the Holiday Inn in Montreal’s China Town. Students were well behaved, polite, engaged and acted as excellent ambassadors of Mascoma High School. It was an excellent trip!

CANAAN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL & ENFIELD VILLAGE SCHOOL PRESCHOOL LEARNING!!

CES It has been a wonderful school year at the Preschool at Canaan Elementary School. This year with our high enrollment we were able to offer a morning and an afternoon four year old program, as well as a morning three year old program. Choice time is always a favorite time of the day for our preschoolers, and in their play they are learning and growing. A few of the choice time activites are dramatic play, building with construction blocks or Lego bricks, fine motor tweezer activities, play dough, gross motor rug activities, and creating at the art table. We end each day with a, "See you later alligator!” followed by the students responding, “In a while crocodile!"

EVS Students in our 3 year old Preschool class visit baby chicks. Fourth grade teacher Heidi Mock received a grant from the Friends of Mascoma, paving the way for the purchase of an incubator and other supplies needed for this project which supports science learning.

Preschool students engage in movement breaks to refocus their energy and minds on learning. Early numeracy skills are reinforced in our four year old preschool program using concrete, active learning experiences.

Canaan Elementary School

Squam Lakes Science Center visited our Kindergarten friends with their "Fur, Feathers and Scales." program.

Our students hang the flag and lead our whole school in the pledge of allegiance every day.

Second Grade visited the police and fire stations learning about our community. Our community garden is coming along beautifully with the help of D-Acres, Mr. Gianini and our hard working 4th grade students.

Junk to Funk was our Artist in Residence this year. Our students learned to work together, care for the environment and rock it!

First grade had apple day and made their own fresh cider.

Life Smarts Program (left) ~ the program is run by the National Consumer League and is oriented toward high school students and consumer literacy. Students compete in five categories: personal finance, consumer rights and responsibilities, technology, health and safety, and the environment. Each year the state champion team is invited to compete at the national level to determine the national champion. This year Mascoma represented NH for the third year in a row at the national competition. The competition was held in Denver, CO, April 8 -12. The Mascoma team was competitive throughout the series of competitions and placed fourth in the nation.

~ Destination Imagination (DI) ~ (right) Mascoma DI once again made us proud as they brought home the 3rd place trophy from the NH State DI competition. Team members Ken Severance-Camp, Peter Knox, Graeme Lambert, Connor Gill and Kylie Sumner dedicated many hours developing their solution for the problem they chose. This year's problem was one of the more difficult ones we have encountered. This team's determination and hard work gave them the highest vehicle score at the state competition. They built a hover board that could be converted to a wheeled vehicle. The team also created a large "magic hat", wonderful scenery and a large bowl of popcorn that traveled across the floor. They put on a great show that entertained us all!

IRS ATHLETICS – GO TIGERS! Indian River School field hockey and soccer were excited about starting the 2015 season on their new fields located behind IRS. Both teams had amazing seasons under the incredible coaching staff of Steve Ladue and Steve Stebbins for soccer and Rob Bennett and Julie Moulton for field hockey.

Steve Stebbins returned to coach the boys’ basketball teams and the girls’ teams welcomed back Jamie Hill as Dave Agan, our coach for 16 years, has retired from the coaching staff. Girls Softball

Steve Ladue returned to coach baseball with assistance from returning coach Josh Barker. Jamie Hill took a short break from basketball season to return to our coaching staff to pick up the girls softball team with assistance from first year coach Sue Miller. Welcome to IRS Athletics Sue! IRS also welcomed two new coaches, Bridget Labrie and Bobbi-Jo Weaver, for our very first volley ball team! It was definitely a building season, but both coaches could not be more proud as the girls had some very close matches throughout the season and won their very last game!

Mascoma athletics offers 13 varsity sports including our newest addition, wrestling. Over the past year, 42% of both boys and girls attending Mascoma participated in a sport at either the varsity or sub-varsity level. This is an impressive percentage which we are constantly working to improve on as studies show that in-season athletes outperform other students academically. This year three senior athletes were honored by the New Hampshire Cross Country Interscholastic Athletic Association and the New Hampshire Athletic Directors Association as scholar athletes at an impressive ceremony at the Capitol Center for the Arts in Concord. Honorees were Rachel Kahn, Ben Jones and Calvin Wilson. Several of our athletes have also recently been selected to participate in the Granite State Games: Kayla Hammond and Kaitlyn Pushee in field hockey, Morgan Longley and Sydney Thompson in volleyball and Tucker Stenger in soccer. As the school year winds down, coaches are already planning on summer activities in their sport and preparing for the fall season.

Gaige Streeter, Grade 11, Scary Stories Winner Mascoma Valley Regional High School A Girl in the Woods A girl in the woods Crossed a path of danger Approaching from behind A complete stranger This stranger was a man Tall and hidden in black Once he had the girl alone He stabbed her in the back With a horrid scream Collapsing to her knees Mouth filled with blood She started screaming past But this man was soulless He threw her against a tree Scrapped up and bleeding out The poor girl couldn’t flee Towering high above her A stare so bitter and tart He took a final killing blow With a swing to her heart

Rebecca Powell, tapestry weaver, now has a beautiful bench to sit on while weaving. Dylan Rock and Raymond Moses created this in Advanced Woods Class with Dave Shinnlinger. Thanks, guys for your thoughtfulness and fine skills! You can see Rebecca’s progress on most Thursday mornings.

As one last scream rang out The stranger turned and fled And left alone in the dark A girl who ended up dead

The Art Club finished a sea creature mobile for the lobby skylight and hung it in the lobby. The sea creatures are shrink-wrap sculptures from the Art 2 class. Each creature is about two feet long! It will hang there for the rest of the school year.

Students in grades 3 through 8 took the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium Testing. This test (SBAC) is required by the Federal Government. Students at the high school level took the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT). This test replaced SBAC for high school students. Students in grades 1-11 participated in the North West Educational Association (NWEA) computer based testing.
