GLEANINGS FROM PAUL’S EPISTLES Unashamed: Gospel Themes in the Book of Romans Romans 1:16-17 Introductory Material of Romans Who was the Author? Paul When was this epistle written? 55—57 AD Who did Paul write this epistle to? Probably to BOTH Jewish and Gentile Christians. Why did Paul write it? “It is curious that, despite the importance everyone concedes to this epistle, there is no agreement about the answers we should give.” Leon Morris Some common answers: 1) Paul wanted to prepare the way for a visit to Rome 2) He wanted to secure the support of the Roman Christians for his Spanish mission. 3) He sought the prayers of the Romans, deliverance from unbelievers and that the Jerusalem church would accept the gift he was bringing. 4) To unveil the gospel and its application within the Christian life.

What theme/s did Paul focus on? • • • • • •

The relationship of Jews and Gentiles Christian Liberty Antinomianism vs. The Law Justification by faith alone God The Gospel

What is the flow/outline of this epistle? *Outline I. II. III. IV. V. VI. VII.

Introduction (1:1-15) Thesis (1:16-17) The Heart of the Gospel: Justification By Faith (1:18—4:25) The Assurance Provided by the Gospel (5:1—8:39) The Defense of the Gospel: Israel and the Gentiles (9:1—11:36) The Transforming Power of the Gospel: Christian Conduct (12:1—15:13) Conclusion (15:14—16:27)

*Adapted and synthesized from Douglas Moo (NICOT) and Leon Morris (PTNC).

What is the gospel? The gospel is to be proud of. The gospel is the power of God. The gospel is for everyone. The gospel is the righteousness of God revealed. The gospel must be embraced by faith alone. Conclusion

Discussion Questions:

1. Did you read Romans? If yes, what challenges you? Confused you? Provoked greater study or greater zeal for God? 2. Why would we be ashamed of the gospel? What would it LOOK like to be “ashamed” of the gospel? Be specific. Finally, what does it mean/look like to be “proud” of the gospel? 3. Resurrection power is at its core simply taking people from “death to life”. The Holy Spirit contains the power to do that and contains the power to bring us from spiritual indifference to spiritual vitality? How do YOU shift from spiritual indifference to spiritual vitality? What scriptures help you address this spiritual dilemma? 4. Who is the person in your life that YOU are skeptical that they would come to Jesus? Stop and pray for the salvation of that people in your group. 5. Justification (being declared righteous) by faith alone is one of the essential doctrines of the Christian faith. Why is it central? What changes if it is NOT faith alone? (For help, read Eph. 2:8-9)
