BCPS GEAR UP High School Summer Camps & Campus Tours 2018
Dear GEAR UP Student, GEAR UP is excited to offer a variety of FREE camps this summer based on your interests! If you would like to attend one of these camps, please submit the following: 1. Turn in the attached sheet, both sides completed, with your choices for summer camp and/or campus tours. 2. For each camp you would like to attend, please submit a short paragraph explaining why you would like to attend the camp and what you hope to learn from the experience OR a brief recommendation letter or email from a teacher or school staff member. GEAR UP Summer camp and trip forms are due to your school’s GEAR UP office on Monday, April 16th, 2018. You will be notified by your GEAR UP Coordinator if you have been chosen for a camp/tour. Once chosen for a camp(s), you and your parents will need to fill out each camp application packet for the specific camp(s) or trip(s) and return those to the GU office by Thursday, April 26th, 2018. June 12: College Bus Tour (Colleges within the Winston Salem and Greensboro Area - Day Trip) We plan to tour at least three colleges within the Winston Salem/Greensboro area. We will plan to have lunch in one of the dining halls on a campus for a true college dining experience. Lunch and snacks will be provided.

June 14: College Bus Tour (Colleges within the NC Mountain Area: Haywood Community College, Western Carolina University, & AB Tech Community College - Day Trip) We plan to tour Haywood Community College with special focus on their Wildlife/Forestry Program. Western Carolina will then host us for lunch in their dining hall followed by a campus tour. Our last stop will be AB Tech where we will tour the school and focus on their Culinary, Aviation, and Veterinary Tech Programs. Lunch and snacks will be provided.

June 21-22 UNCA Camp: Careers in Health & Wellness & the College Experience (Overnight Camp) This camp will allow students to get hands-on experience in athletics and fitness and interact with student athletes on campus. Students will be engaged in exploring programs such as rural pharmacy, dental assisting, and nursing. Activities may include: movement exercises, college information-admissions and financial aid, pool time, pizza, and ice cream. Meals and snacks will be provided.

June 25, 26, & 27: AppState College Adventure Camp (Overnight Camp) College Adventure Camp is a leadership program to support students’ aspirations to go to college and help their friends along the way. This 3 day program is intended students to experience a college campus, participate in outdoor experiences, leadership programming, college information and most important- have a blast! Activities may include: leadership games, geology activities, caving, service project, tour of campus, good food, outdoor movies, bonfire, s'mores, college knowledge, and so much more. Meals and snacks will be provided.

July 16, 17, 18, & 19: Web Design Camp at Draughn High School (Day Camp) In this beginner-focused course, students are given the skills needed to design, code, and launch custom websites. Students will be fully immersed in the introductory principles of web design where they will learn the language of web using source technologies (HTML, CSS, Javascript). Students will create their own projects with these services. Transportation will not be provided for students by AppState, GU, or BCPS. Lunch and snacks will be provided.

July 23, 24, 25, & 26: Public Health College & Careers Tour (Overnight Trip - Atlanta Georgia) CDC Museum Disease Detective Camp is focused on the field of public health services and the science of epidemiology. During this camp students will experience a variety of experiences both in a classroom setting and hands-on. Activities may include: re-created outbreaks of certain diseases, mock press conferences, laboratory sessions, and environmental and global health exercises.

July 30 & 31: ECU & UNCW Bus Tour (Overnight Trip) On this trip we will be visiting East Carolina University and the University of North Carolina Wilmington, eating on campus and staying in the residence halls at UNCW. Meals and snacks will be provided.

Engineering Day Camps will be held at EBHS and PHS this summer. Dates are yet to be determined. GEAR UP will sponsor 15 rising 9th, 10th, and 11th grade students for each of these camps. Please check this box if you would like more information on these camps. Thanks! Transportation will not be provided for students by AppState, GU, or BCPS. Lunch and snacks will NOT be provided.
