“I AM the Door of the Sheep” (John 10:7) Introduction: John 10:1-10 “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who does not enter by the door into the fold of the sheep, but climbs up some other way, he is a thief and a robber. But he who enters by the door is a shepherd of the sheep. To him the doorkeeper opens, and the sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he puts forth all his own, he goes ahead of them, and the sheep follow him because they know his voice. A stranger they simply will not follow, but will flee from him, because they do not know the voice of strangers.” This figure of speech Jesus spoke to them, but they did not understand what those things were which He had been saying to them. So Jesus said to them again, “Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. All who came before Me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not hear them. I am the door; if anyone enters through Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.”

Background: I. The Gatekeeper II. The Imposters John 10:1 “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who does not enter by the door into the fold of the sheep, but climbs up some other way, he is a thief and a robber.” Matthew 23:13 “But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, because you shut off the kingdom of heaven from people; for you do not enter in yourselves, nor do you allow those who are entering to go in.”

III. The True Shepherd 1 Peter 2:25 “For you were continually straying like sheep, but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Guardian of your souls.” Hebrews 13:20 “Now the God of peace, who brought up from the dead the great Shepherd of the sheep through the blood of the eternal covenant, even Jesus our Lord...” • As the true shepherd Jesus stands before the flock of mankind and calls out his own flock by name. John 10:2-3 “But he who enters by the door is a shepherd of the sheep. To him the doorkeeper opens, and the sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name...” John 6:44 “No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up on the last day.” John 15:16 “You did not choose Me but I chose you...” • As the true shepherd Jesus leads us. John 10:3 “To him the doorkeeper opens, and the sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. • As the true shepherd Jesus walks ahead of His sheep. John 10:4 “When he puts forth all his own, he goes ahead of them, and the sheep follow him because they know his voice.”

IV. The True Sheep John 10:4-5 “When he puts forth all his own, he goes ahead of them, and the sheep follow him because they know his voice. A stranger they simply will not follow, but will flee from him, because they do not know the voice of strangers.”

• His true sheep know His voice and follow Him John 10:4 “When he puts forth all his own, he goes ahead of them, and the sheep follow him because they know his voice. Psalm 100:3 “Know that the Lord Himself is God; it is He who has made us, and not we ourselves; We are His people and the sheep of His pasture.” • His true sheep can never leave His flock and follow another shepherd. John 10:5 “A stranger they simply will not follow, but will flee from him, because they do not know the voice of strangers.” Matthew 24:24 “For false Christs and false prophets will arise and will show great signs and wonders, so as to mislead, if possible, even the elect.” — (i.e. the “called out” ones) John 10:6 “This figure of speech Jesus spoke to them, but they did not understand what those things were which He had been saying to them.”

V. The Door of the Sheep John 10:7-8 So Jesus said to them again, “Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. All who came before Me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not hear them.” Matthew 7:15 “Beware of the false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly are ravenous wolves.” Matthew 24:23-25 “Then if anyone says to you, 'Behold, here is the Christ,' or ' There He is,' do not believe him. For false Christs and false prophets will arise and will show great signs and wonders, so as to mislead, if possible, even the elect. Behold, I have told you in advance.”

VI. The Application Point #1. We Must Enter Heaven Through Him John 10:9 “I am the door; if anyone enters through Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture.” John 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.” Ephesians 2:18 “...for through Him we both have our access in one Spirit to the Father.” Point #2. We Will Enjoy Life Because of Him • We enjoy immediate salvation because of Him John 10:9 “I am the door; if anyone enters through Me, he will be saved...” Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death (i.e. separation from God), but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. • We enjoy eternal security because of Him John 10:9 “I am the door; if anyone enters through Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture.” cf. Psalm 121:8 “The Lord will guard your going out and your coming in from this time forth and forever.” • We enjoy abundant life because of Him John 10:9 “I am the door; if anyone enters through Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.” “My cup overflows...” (Psalm 23:5)

Conclusion: “Jesus, You are the gate of the sheep...the door of salvation. You are the entryway to abundant blessing...the only way to heaven. We respond to the invitation to enter the flock of God through You. We thank You we get to enjoy being in the flock of God because of You.”
