Flagstaff’s Summer Specialty Camps 2017 Makerspace (Traditional) Camp

Anatomy Academy Camp

Makerspaces encourage the 21st century skills of communication, collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking. In this camp, students will be introduced to traditional hands-on projects. Activities include: machine sewing, hand sewing, weaving, modge podge, pom poms, handmade paper, cereal box notebooks, shaker cards, magnets, pins, and buttons. Week 1, June 5-9 Grades 3-5

This is a hands-on approach to discovering the anatomy of sharks, frogs, and pigs while culminating in a comparison to human anatomy. We will use an array of mediums from Wild Kratts cartoons to real anatomical images. We will make clay bones, model hearts from a disposable glove, and write our own bones songs. We will end the camp with an actual dissection! Week 2, June 12-16 Grades K-2 Week 3, June 19-23 Grades 3-5 Week 4, June 26-30 Grades 6-8

Babysitter’s Bootcamp This course will provide the knowledge and skills necessary to safely and responsibly give care to infants and children. Caregivers will learn how to administer First Aid, CPR, and AED along with receiving official certification through the American Red Cross. Topics covered will include ways to stay safe, what to do in an emergency, how to recognize/handle a variety of behaviors, learning what age-appropriate activities to provide children based on their development, and how to navigate finding jobs appropriately.

Week 1, June 5-9 Ages 11-15

Ahoy Matey! Pirate Drawing Camp Join us as we explore the world of pirates with new drawing adventures! Pirates, treasure maps, sunken treasures, parrots, a grand pirate ship and more will inspire us as we draw, using cartoon and realistic drawing techniques. Kids love drawing our playful, expressive characters and will complete several drawings each day using the unique Young Rembrandts drawing method. They will show you all they have learned over the week when they complete one large scene on the final day. Get ready for pirate fun and enroll today!

Week 1, June 5-9 Grades 1-5

Growth Mindset Camp Go to THE FORCE from THE DARKSIDE with your Elastic Brain! Come learn about how famous people who failed became "smart" by making mistakes. You too can fail, make mistakes and be smart! We will do this through art projects, video's and creating science models.

Week 2, June 12-16 Grades 3-5

Makerspace (Engineering) Camp Makerspaces encourage the 21st century skills of communication, collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking. In this camp, students will be introduced to the Engineering Design Process though Makerspace projects and challenges. Projects will include: catapults, parachutes, optical illusion spinners, circuit stickers, Squishy Circuits, and Makey Makey. Challenges include: marble run, marshmallow challenge, and a straw bridge challenge. Students will also build their own arcade.

Week 2, June 12-16 Grades 3-5

Ocean Life Drawing Camp Five, fun-filled days await our students as we explore ocean life as they learn to draw and color with pastels. We will create detailed, pastel compositions on each day, focusing on a different ocean-themed subject. We will draw eye-catching sea stars along the shoreline and a pair of vibrant clown fish. We will illustrate a sea turtle with bold patterns, a blue crab and a wondrous scene of jellyfish. Our instruction will bring remarkable results, and you will want to head to the frame shop with your child’s finished pastel pieces. These pastel drawings will reward students with a great sense of pride and accomplishment.

Fables with Character Camp Building Character - Say WHAT! A journey through fables and what they mean. A fable and character building story each day that will help build your character in turn helping with friendships, classroom strategy and more through use of interactive notebook.

Dominion

Who doesn't love to exercise and work those muscles in new and different ways? Come join the fun of learning some basic skills and teamwork of soccer, football, T-ball, basketball, and a few games from around the world! We've got athletes in the making.

Arm the Militia!! Down into the Mines!! Beware the dubious Minions and choose your Sacrifices wisely. Welcome to world of Dominion: The medieval-based deck-building card game! Like Pokemon? Like Magic? THIS IS BETTER!!!! Dominion is complex card playing game that involves strategizing, betrayal, and critical thinking. Camp members will experience hours of imaginative game-play with Mr Nagle, a 5th grade teacher. Mr. Nagle has been playing Dominion for five years, and has developed a great strategy for teaching young children this usually very complex game. So, come and explore the Provinces, Duchies, and Estates. Fight knights, become a thief, build your DOMINION.

Week 2, June 12-16 Grades K-2

Garden Camp The Dragon Flight Garden Camp will participate in planting, caring for and harvesting a variety of food crops and flowers. In addition to outdoor gardening, we will take care of the aquaponic system inside the greenhouse. Go fishin' (no hooks allowed) with worms from the worm bin. Each camper will come home with a decorated planter, a bird seed ornament, and a wood project.

Chefs in the Making Who doesn't like to eat? So why not become the chef of your own kitchen! Chefs in the Making will give you the opportunity to not only enjoy some tasty treats but to learn about the food groups, where the food comes from, and how to put that food together to make some delicious, and some healthy foods. Week 3, June 19-23 Grades K-2 Week 4, June 26-30 Grades 3-5

Horse Drawing and Pastel Camp Horses, horses, & more horses! Five fun-filled days await our campers as we explore the wonderful world of horses. Horses are not only graceful and majestic animals, but they are also excellent subjects to draw and color. In our Young Rembrandts Horse Drawing Camp, our campers will learn how to draw horses of all shapes, sizes, and styles. We’ll use different media to create colorful compositions which help our campers strengthen their coloring skills. On the final day we will create a large drawing with pastels. Challenging drawings reward our campers with a greater sense of accomplishment. Please wear an old shirt or smock to the final day of class.

Capoeira Canavial’s Camp Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian martial art and dance form that incorporates rhythm, coordinated call and response movements, strength, flexibility, singing, and percussion instruments. All levels of physical fitness are welcome. The uniqueness of Capoeira will give your body physical strength, power and flexibility and your mind self-confidence, concentration, courage and creativity. Come prepared to move.

Week 3, June 19-23 Week 6, July 17-21 Grades K-3

Girl Empowerment Camp Spend the week fuelling up with Girl Power. We will dive into our own personal strengths, goals and inspire our dreams. Working with friendship ideas and self-esteem concepts, campers will work on selfdriven art projects. Using trust building fun interactive games and friendship empowering crafts, campers will stimulate self-image ideas and crate a base understanding for long-term friendships. The focus of this camp is to enrich friendship skills and to create a confident, well centered, inspired, and self-accepting powered up girl.

Week 4, June 26-30 Grades 5-6 Week 6, July 17-21 Grades 7-8

Forensics Camp Comprised of independent hands-on laboratory kits, Lyle and Louise introduces your camper to a broad range of techniques in forensic analysis. This camp will teach students basic data collection and logical thought and introduce them to the field of forensics.

Flagstaff’s Summer Specialty Camps 2017 African Safari Drawing Camp

Dinosaurs/Paleontologist Camp

Go on a Safari adventure with Young Rembrandts this summer! We will explore the exciting land and many animals that inhabit Africa. In five days we will draw a variety of animals in various scenes with different media. To keep things exciting, we will explore the African Safari through the fun technique of cartoon as well. We will even challenge our artistic talents by creating 2 large scenes – one in a graphic style filled with a variety of animals and another focusing on the twists and turns of an African snake completed with pastel chalks. Our exploration through Africa allows for a bounty of adventure and creativity.

This camp week is filled with the wonders of dinosaurs. We will make dinosaurs eggs to dig into, make our own fossils tracks and even bones. We will discover what it is like to be on a dinosaur dig and be a paleontologist. Filled with fun crafts and hands on learning. Each camper will take home dinosaur treasures and have excitement exploring the life and land of dinosaurs.

Week 4, June 26-30 Grades 1-5

Messy Mad Scientists Camp Kids and messy go hand in hand! So come be a scientist and get your hands dirty in all kinds of fun and crazy science experiments that your mom may not let you do at home! We will watch things bubble, fizz, and explode!

Week 5, July 10-14 Grades 3-5 Week 6, July 17-21 Grades K-2

Favorite Apps and Video Game Drawing Camp Art is all around us, including in our phone and online! Join Young Rembrandts for a workshop mimicking the amazing imagery of our Favorite Apps and Video Games! Every day campers will learn new illustration and coloring techniques inspired by popular video games. Artwork is inspired by a pixel block characters, plants and zombies and many more classic and new apps and games. If your camper loves to game or draw, they’ll have a blast putting their own personal touches on some of these favorites.

Week 5, July 10-14 Grades 1-5

Please don’t PASS the Manners Camp Manners, "Do I need them"? Everyone has manners, not everyone uses them. We will have fun while learning everyday courtesy as well as table manners. Finishing with a meal showing all we have learned. This camp is a mix of Emily Post and today's expectations.

Rocket Science Camp Space exploration plays a major role in the history of humankind. The cultural, political and sociological repercussions are extraordinary, and the amount of resources dedicated to space exploration is enormous. This aerospace course is a first step for those interested in learning more about rocket science. Campers will build and launch their own rockets. Campers will learn: the fundamentals of aerospace engineering, including how to move in space and how rockets work, the key aspects of space systems and the space environment, and current trends and future projects in space exploration

Fashion, Faces, and Flowers Drawing Camp For the fashionistas, florists and budding makeup artists… Join Young Rembrandts for a workshop celebrating the beautiful world of girls. Every day campers will be challenged and delighted drawing images that exude femininity and loveliness. Campers will draw and color faces, stretch their imaginations illustrating whimsical flowers and challenge their creativity when tying them all together in fanciful settings. Prepare for elegance and a heap of drawing excellence!

Week 6 July 17-21 Grades 1-5

Kindergarten Camp The first day of Kindergarten can be a little scary, but this camp will show your soon to be Kindergartener just how much fun it can be. Join us as we see what Kindergarten is all about. We will sing, play, paint, explore, go outdoors, read, plus so much more. Your little one will not want to miss out on this summer camp adventure.
