Dear MMS Families,

Pr incipal's M essage

It is hard to believe that we are nearing the end of the first quarter of the school year. The weeks have passed by swiftly, and teachers have already covered a tremendous amount of content. In addition to signaling the beginning of the second quarter, October is an important month at Matthews Middle School as it includes both our first quarter academic benchmarking period, and fall conferences. In an effort to promote and expand communication with parents, our teachers are looking forward to providing additional insights and updates during these conferences. They will take place on Wednesday, October 18, 2017, and Thursday, October 19, 2017. If you have not already received instructions, be on the lookout for information from grade-level teams on how to sign up for a conference session. It is our hope that every parent can attend his or her child?s conference in order to continue the partnership in his or her education. The staff and I want to thank you in advance for taking the time to attend conferences. Please note that in order to accommodate the schedule for these two dates, there will be an early 1:05 p.m. dismissal on Wednesday, October 18th and no student attendance on Thursday, October 19th. Additionally, there will be no student attendance on Friday, October 20th. In addition to providing families with updates on grade-level progress at conferences, we will be sharing state and normed assessment data with parents, which will be sent home with students. Last spring, your child participated in a state assessment known as the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) test. This test measured the more rigorous standards that Illinois has established for what students should learn and be able to do in order to be successful in the next grade level, and ultimately, in college and the workplace. In a series of exams, PARCC required students to demonstrate their critical thinking, problem-solving, and analytical writing skills in the content areas of Math and English Language Arts. Questions required students to closely read and compare multiple texts or media, to identify more than one correct answer, to gather and prioritize supporting details, to synthesize answers using textual evidence, and to write a final essay to demonstrate reading comprehension. Both PARCC and Fall NWEA MAP results will go home with the student?s 1st Quarter report card just prior to conferences.

What do your child?s PARCC scores mean? Illinois Learning Standards place great emphasis on critical thinking, problem solving, and writing because these are the most important skills today?s colleges and employers expect in our graduates. The PARCC tests measured your child?s performance on these skills at a deep level. As schools continue to follow the Illinois Learning Standards, your child will have more chances to build upon these skills. As a reminder, new this year, Matthews MIddle School has been designated as a Title I school. Title I is a federal program that provides funding to schools to help students who are low-achieving or at risk of falling behind. Title I funds are allocated to schools based on the percentages of students who receive free or reduced lunches. Maximizing communication between home and school is imperative to your child?s educational success, and something that we will continue to find ways to improve upon. Please visit our website, www.d118.org/matthews , and keep in mind that we will post important ?real-time? updates and information on the social media platform Twitter, regularly. Please consider following me (@Robert_Taterka1) and Matthews Middle School (@MatthewsMS118). As always, feel free to call me at 847.526.6210 or email me at [email protected] at any time. Sincerely, Robert Taterka Principal

Nurse News October Newsletter Vision Screening Notice All 8th grade students will receive a vision screening and/or have their glasses checked within the next month. If your child should be wearing glasses/contacts at school, please remind him/her to bring them and wear them. If students do not have their glasses at school on the day of the screening, they will be screened without them, and then they will be instructed to bring the glasses to school to be checked. A referral notice will be mailed home to those students who do not pass the screening or whose glasses are not in good condition. If you receive this notice, please contact your eye doctor at your earliest convenience to schedule an appointment for your child. Retur n the completed vision examination r epor t to me after the doctor visit. Impaired vision can impede learning and contribute to the development of emotional and behavioral problems. Discovery and treatment of vision problems can prevent or alleviate many problems associated with impaired vision. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter. I f you have any questions regarding the above information or any

other health concerns, please feel free to contact me at 847-526-6210 ext 2505. Ms. Patti Christensen

Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is a proactive systems approach to establishing the behavioral supports and social culture needed for all students in a school to achieve social, emotional, and academic success. Matthews Middle School has adopted PBIS to help our students become more responsible, respectful, and safe citizens here at Matthews and in our community. On August 16th, we kicked off the year with videos, classroom experiences, and a celebration to reinforce the behavioral expectations when students are on the bus and at school. Every Thursday, during lunches, we offer the Mustang Mercantile. Students are welcome to trade in their Mustang Madness Tickets for items in the mercantile. Any student who is interested in becoming a Mercantile Manager can attend a meeting every Thursday during homeroom with Mrs. Krieger in room 131. Last year we had over 40 students volunteer to be Mercantile Managers. If you have any questions regarding the PBIS program please contact either Mr. Grandt (x2612) or Mr. Taterka (x2500).

Mustangs are respectful, responsible, and safe!

Beneath Paperback $6______ Hardcover $14______ Pat O'Toole has always idolized his older brother, Coop. Coop is... different. He doesn't talk on the phone, doesn't use email, and doesn't have friends. He's never really cared for anything but the thrill of being underground, and for Pat of course. So it's no surprise to anyone that after a huge fight with their parents, Coop runs away. One year later, Pat receives a package containing a digital voice recorder and a cryptic message from his brother. He follows the clues to New York City and soon discovers that Coop has joined the Community, a society living beneath the streets. Now it's up to Pat to find his brother -- and bring him home. Above Hardcover $14______ Pat O'Toole and his brother, Coop, are on the run from an enemy that specializes in hiding in plain sight. Along with their new companion, Kate, they've narrowly escaped a cult like community situated beneath the streets of New York City. Kate has lived underground since birth, and the world above thrills her, but it's treacherous as well. With the cult's leader -- Kate's grandfather -hatching a new scheme of global consequence, the three runaways may be the only ones who can stop him. Will they face him head-on, or will they spend the rest of their lives as fugitives?

Turn the page over for more selections and to fill out the form for purchase.

Peak Paperback $7______ Hardcover $15______ After Peak Marcello is arrested for scaling a New York City skyscraper, he's left with two choices: wither away in Juvenile Detention or go live with his long-lost father, who runs a climbing company in Thailand. But Peak quickly learns that his father's renewed interest in him has strings attached. Big strings. As owner of Peak Expeditions, he wants his son to be the youngest person to reach the Everest summit--and his motives are selfish at best. Even so, for a climbing addict like Peak, tackling Everest is the challenge of a lifetime. But it's also one that could cost him his life.

The Edge Paperback $7______ Hardcover $15______ The International Peace Ascent is the brainchild of billionaire Sebastian Plank: Recruit a global team of young climbers and film an inspiring, world-uniting documentary. The adventure begins when Peak Marcello and his mountaineer mother are helicoptered to a remote base camp in the Hindu Kush Mountains on the Afghanistan-Pakistan border. When the camp is attacked and his mother taken, Peak has no choice but to track down the perpetrators to try to save her. Fans of the bestselling Peak will be thrilled with this gripping, highs takes sequel.

Mutation (Cryptid Hunters) Paperback $6______ Marty O'Hara and his friends Luther Smyth and Dylan Hickock have managed to rescue Marty's cousin, Grace, from the clutches of her grandfather, the nefarious pseudo-naturalist Noah Blackwood. Now their most dangerous mission lies ahead of them. Marty's parents have been missing in Brazil for months, and their trail has all but run cold. With time running out, Marty, Grace, and the Cryptos Island crew race down to Brazil, to the jaguar preserve run by Dr. Robert Lansa and his son, Jake. But even the preserve isn't safe. When their friends begin disappearing one by one, Marty and Grace head into the rain forest in pursuit, where they discover that Noah Blackwood has twisted the natural order of things beyond their wildest, most terrifying dreams. Chupacabra (Cryptid Hunters) Paperback $7______ Strange experiments are taking place in the levels of laboratories beneath the Blackwood's Ark. Because if Noah Blackwood can't trap a cryptid, then he and his team of mad scientists just might have to create one. With Blackwood's henchman Butch McCall hot on the kids' heels and trouble at every turn, are Marty, Luther, and Grace on a collision course with a blood-sucking chupacabra?
