PASTOR’S PAge
Grace and Peace, “How do we want to Live?” A few weeks back I was sick for a few days and I got to watch one of my favorite movies, Shawshank Redemption. The main character Andy Dufresne goes to prison for a crime he didn’t commit. Andy does his best to make prison life bearable. Outside of prison he was a banker and knew the ways of how to manage money. Doesn’t seem like that would be of much benefit in prison, right? Only the word gets out how good at managing money. Soon he is doing taxes for the warden and the prison guards, and then prison guards from other prisons. Andy is so good the warden has him doing his dirty laundry- Yes his suits; but Andy actually takes the wardens bribe money and has it “laundered.” Towards the end of the movie, Andy accuses the warden of being obtuse; naturally the warden wants to teach him a lesson and Andy is thrown into solitary confinement for an unheard of two months. When Andy is finally put back into the general population there is a scene where he is out it the yard with his friend, Red played by Morgan Freeman. Andy is mentally and physically beaten down and has reached a crossroads. Andy concludes: It’s time to get busy living or get busy dying. What a great line to start Lent. Lent is a time when the Holy Spirit whispers to us, “Repent, turn around, and take a new adventure with me.” Repentance is the call of Lent to try another way, to turn around and explore another path. Repentance does have a bad reputation, but I think the Spirit is inviting us to take a 40-day journey joyfully, trying out a new adventure in living. The spirit is inviting us on a journey in which we carry less baggage, letting go of the things we worry too much about in order to discover that what is truly valuable in life is rarely a thing.
Ash Wednesday begins Lent with lessons from Matthew 18:1-18. It emphasizes that you can’t go through the motions in life and how to live more joyfully and abundantly: Don’t practice your faith in a way that is “showing off” to others. WHEN you give, let it be done is secret. WHEN you pray; don‘t be showing off to others; go into your shut the door and do it in private. WHEN you FAST (What a concept!) don’t make your face all disfigured; wash your face and anoint yourself. Let us during this time of Lent repent and get busy living.

Christian Education news~ At our last Education meeting we discussed Lent and if we should try to have the children give up something for Lent. After a brief discussion it was decided it might be better to maybe try to encourage doing some good things during Lent. We talked about making small banks, but then we would need to count all the change, so we talked about envelopes for Lent. Then after the meeting I thought why not have Lenten envelopes for everyone, it would give us all a chance to think of others. So last Sunday during Sunday School we got together and took plain envelopes and transformed them into Lenten envelopes, including stickers from the younger class, stickers and notes from the middle class and notes and a spot for a name, envelope number and amount by the older children. We were able to hand them out after church. The envelopes included items such as: Give a Smile, Give a compliment, Give food to the food pantry, Pray for Others, Send a card, Give a Hand, Donate snacks for church. Feel free to add other items that you may do to help others. These are all small things that we can consider doing. The idea is to make a mark by each item each time you do it and by the end of the 40 days of Lent (4-15-17) you can count up all the marks and decide how much you want to donate per mark. Then simply put the envelope with you donation in the offering basket on Easter or the Sunday after. Make sure to put your name and envelope number (if you have one) also. The amount you donate will go under Lenten offering for your donations. The money donated for Lent will go towards the orphanage in Haiti. Katie Luedtke is headed back in May and it would be nice to send some money with her for the orphanage. I hope to compile the information on the envelopes so we know how many times New Horizon UCC members and friends did each of the items on the envelopes. And, of course, be able to let everyone know how much money was donated. Thanks for thinking of others.

The 100th Anniversary of the Boltonville Fire Department Join the Farmington Historical Society on Saturday, March 11, from 1-3pm at the Boltonville Fire House for a short presentation on 100 years of a volunteer Fire Department and tours of the firehouse and equipment. The Boltonville Fire Department was formed in 1917 after two serious fires in the small village. It has continued as a volunteer organization for all these years supported by fundraisers such as the Rain Days and the Street Dance and some tax revenue. The very first fire truck cost $350 and the most recent fire truck purchase was approximately $350,000. The meeting is open to the public and will be held in the Boltonville Fire House (lower level), cake and ice cream will be served. The Fire House is located at 9336 Bolton Dr. (next to the ball park in Boltonville).

Take Care of Yourself Vitamin D3 is super important in the winter in Wisconsinites’ especially, not enough sun/vitamin D3 can cause other health problems. Vitamin D3 fights depression, fights disease, supports teeth &bone health, & boost weight loss. It can be hard to get enough vitamin D each day through sun exposure and food alone, so taking vitamin D supplements can help. Ask your doctor before taking a supplement to get the dosage right. Few foods contain vitamin D naturally. Because of this, some foods are fortified. This means that vitamin D has been added. Foods that contain vitamin D include: salmon shrimp yogurt (fortified)
milk (fortified)
sardines
