Toastmasters has been making better leaders for decades, and District 47 has more than a few members who've devoted their lives to the cause of communication and leadership. We want to honor them with the District 47 Lifetime Achievement Award, recognizing our most dedicated Toastmasters. If you know someone in your club or in the district who has made substantial contibutions to our organization, submit their name by April 1. Tell us their home club name, how long they've been in Toastmasters and what offices they've held at the club, division and district level. Then write a brief explanation of why you believe this Toastmaster deserves a Lifetime Achievement Award. Awards will be announced at the Spring Conference, April 22-23. Anthony Longley, DTM (“Tribute to Damien Miller"), joined First Bahamas Branch of Toastmasters in May 1987 and has held many leadership positions in the district, including lieutenant governor education in 2013-14 and district governor in 2014-15. The More You Give, the More You Get Hello, my friends! TLIs . . . done! Contests . . . working on them! Dues are DUE . . . getting this done by March 31st! Next up? Spring Conference! So much to do as a Toastmaster! It’s exciting when you get involved. Toastmasters is more than just you or me; it’s US. We learn so much in our club meetings. That is the first place we get the benefits of being a Toastmaster. When it’s done right, we enjoy being a Toastmaster. That means when we have a mutually supportive place to practice our speaking and our leadership challenges. That means when we feel others appreciate our being there and we appreciate others as well. When we actively contribute to the meeting, be it serving in a role or giving a note of support to a fellow member, we enjoy being a Toastmaster. Getting involved outside of your club brings you even more of the good things Toastmasters has to offer. I hope you are going to your area and division contests. They are great fun and you get to see remarkable talent. Many members have said it is too difficult to get to the conferences on Fridays due to their employment. We have heard you and are taking the advice of other successful districts by moving the Table Topics Contest from Friday night to Sunday morning, with a full breakfast and keynote speaker. Saturday will be the same as full Saturday conference schedules in the past: workshops, luncheon, business meeting with the district leadership elections, dinner, keynote speaker, International Speech Contest, DTM Walk and a Knock Your Socks Off After-Party! The VALUE of the Toastmasters Journey I do not have a great deal to say this time (I know, I know . . . hard to believe), but I do have what I believe is an important point to make. Although we should, and do, focus on the well-being and progress of our individual members, there can be no argument that one of the measures of our collective status is membership payments. Even a casual glance at the metrics kept by Toastmasters International shows that the number of member payments for each club, area, division and district are down . . . waaaay down. This is undeniably a concern at all levels of the Toastmasters organization. A commonly heard reason for this status is the increase in membership dues from $36 to $45 every six months. That cause may, in fact, be valid, but it also reflects a misrepresentation of the Toastmasters contribution to our lives. As Warren Buffet has noted, “Price is what you pay . . . value is what you receive.” We need to stop stressing the recurring dues (price) of our individual memberships and focus on what we gain (value) from involvement in our clubs. We have all grown in many ways from our involvement, and we have seen similar development in our fellow members. Whether viewed through the lens of our personal experience or through that of our associations within our clubs, there can be little dispute that the mission of Toastmasters has, in fact, provided "a mutually supportive and positive learning environment in which every individual member has the opportunity to develop oral communication and leadership skills, which in turn foster self-confidence and personal growth.”

This is the message that we should be bringing to the public in general and our members in particular. Yes, the membership dues have risen (by a rather modest amount of $1.50 per month), but the value to be gained from our Toastmasters passage from nervous neophyte to accomplished professional is what counts in the end. It is, quite frankly, one of the best investments we can make for ourselves. It would be folly to let this opportunity slip through our fingers. I ask that you keep this in mind when it becomes time to renew your dues for the next membership cycle. Introducing Division Pages on Facebook Facebook has proven to be one of the district's most powerful communication tools, and we've made some changes that we believe will make it even better. We've brought back the Facebook division pages so you can share divisionspecific news with the people it's most relevant to: your fellow Toastmasters in your divisions.

The big news here is that each division now has its own place to exchange information and announcements that pertain only to that division and the clubs within it. Area and club contests would fall into this category. By moving club and area news to the division pages, we've given the district pages more visibility for district-wide matters: division-level contests, district conferences and the Toastmasters Leadership Institutes, for instance. This will be a great help for area event managers. Need a chief judge for your contest? Post a "help wanted" on your division's page. The post will only be seen by members of your division, who are probably better able to help than someone three counties (or another country) away. Kate McClare, ACS, ALB

District 47 group page: A closed group requiring administrator approval for membership. It is for internal communication that non-members don't have any interest in or need to know. Posts must be approved by an administrator. District 47 community page: An open page that can be seen by anyone who "likes" it, including nonmembers. Posts should also be of district-wide interest and must be approved by an administrator. Please keep this page for special club news like open houses, significant anniversaries and major education achievements such as your new Distinguished Toastmasters, not routine weekly meetings. Division group pages: Closed groups requiring an administrator’s approval for membership. The division directors and a few district leaders have been made page administrators. Group members may post without administrator approval. It's easy to join your Division A’s bright, shiny new Facebook page. Have you found yours yet? division page. Just go to Facebook and do a search for your division — "District 47 Division A," for instance — and request membership. You should be approved quickly. Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Dues Renewal, But Were Afraid to Ask Did you ever try to process a membership renewal the night before registration ended? How long were YOU online trying to process that one application? Yes indeed, it is that time of the year when we begin to collect membership dues. Let’s see if we can make the membership renewal process easier and quicker. To maintain status as a member in good standing, each Toastmaster must pay their dues by March 31. You will be amazed at the progress of renewals when the treasurer and the vice president membership work together to renew each member of their club. I like simple, so let’s consider the easiest and cleanest way to renew dues. This requires an internet connection and an iPad, tablet or laptop.

Traditionally, registration opens at the end of February. Once Lois Margolin, DTM registration opens, it’s time to bring your iPad, tablet or laptop to your meeting. This process is not restricted to only the treasurer. If you are the vice president membership, you can help process membership renewals. I suggest you renew membership dues before and/or after your weekly meeting. Here are the detailed steps to renew a member: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7.

Go to www.toastmasters.org. Click "Login." Enter your username and password at the login page. Click on Leadership Central. Click on Club Central. Click on your club name. Click "Pay dues." a. Click on "Submit" where it says, “Find orders with end date in the future.” b. A drop-down list of all the members of your club who have not paid their dues will appear. c. Click on the checkbox of the member you are renewing. d. Scroll down to the bottom to the credit card information area. e. You can either let the member enter their credit card information and finalize by clicking on “Process Payment,” or you can enter the information while the member waits. To determine the number of renewals you should process each meeting, take the number of members who should renew and divide by the number of meetings. Consider this your weekly processing goal. If necessary, have two people bring laptops. If a member does not attend a meeting, the vice president membership should contact the member to remind them about their dues. They can process the dues or have the member call the treasurer so their renewal can be processed before April 1. By working together, you can get your membership renewed on a timely basis. It’s a win-win for the club and the stress level on the treasurer will be significantly reduced. Happy renewing! Member Spotlight Cherise A. Williams

Developing the Power to Inspire By Pat Stevenson, CC, ALB The REAL Toastmasters Seated before me is the beautiful, charismatic Cherise A. Williams, who joined the REAL Toastmasters Club in Palm Beach Gardens in September 2016. I am careful to include her middle initial, as she has specified that her middle initial is included in her brand! Williams joined Toastmasters on the advice of one of her mentors, who felt she should add public speaking to her skillset to prepare her to speak professionally. This talented lady is an author, educator, actress, blogger, modern dancer, choreographer and motivational writer. She is president and founder of two corporations: Cherise A. Williams Corp., a for-profit copywriting service; and Nurture the Powerful You Foundation, a 501(c)3 corporation which focuses on promoting literacy. She established both corporations in 2016. Her attention currently is on empowering girls, women and families in Broward County to fight illiteracy as well as encourage self-motivation, determination and entrepreneurship. She works with clients at Boatwright Family Day Care Center; Driftwood Middle Magnet Academy of Health and Wellness; and Community Music School of Tradition Youth Orchestras, Inc. Williams is a board member of the music school and sponsored the orchestra's Christmas concert in 2016. Cherise A. Williams

Williams never misses the opportunity to tell you to "step boldly into [your] power. Refuse to yield what was given [you] to an enemy." She believes personal and professional struggles have made her the strong, determined person she is today. She feels Toastmasters is helping her to break barriers of shyness "to become a better speaker with many gifts and talents.” The daughter of two pastors, Williams was raised in Ft. Lauderdale and has four sisters and three brothers. Like her mother, she began writing in her teens and has instilled in her 11- and 18-year-old sons the importance of writing. She tells proudly that her younger son will be publishing his first book by the end of the year. Williams graduated cum laude from Everest University with a bachelor of arts in accounting and a master's degree in business administration. She is currently working toward a doctorate in business management, with a focus on leadership, from Capella University. She understands the value of training and mentors. She has an acting coach and business mentor and, of course, her Toastmasters mentor, Michael Eyermann, who took second place in the District 47 Evaluation Contest in 2016. Williams enjoys the impromptu speaking portion of Toastmasters meetings. In her words, “I like how I can create what I want in the unknown without fear or doubt telling my story to inspire others in a POWERFUL way.” She also enjoys the collaborative aspect of performing leadership roles and improving her listening and “hosting expertise.” In the true Toastmasters spirit, Williams is open to learning and says she delights in stretching herself to "attract, amaze others and add value to them.” You can follow Williams at #BeBoldUnderNeaththeMakeUp, #CheriseAWilliamsinspiringquotes and #NurturethePowerfulYou!, or read her blog, cheriseawilliamsinspiringblog.org, which inspires readers on 8 subjects from fighting adversity to finding faith in God.

Tribute Damien K.T. Miller, DTM

Remembering His Friendship and Leadership By Anthony Longley, DTM Past District Governor Approximately 20 years ago, I sat on a membership committee to interview one Mr. Damien K. T. Miller for membership in The First Bahamas Branch of Toastmasters Club 1600. His application was subsequently accepted. On the night of his induction, a tall, slender, wellgroomed young man with a schoolboy haircut, a fitted jacket, straight-legged pants, a propeller for a bowtie and long, pointed shoes that curved upward at the toe like the bow of a canoe, stood to recite the member's pledge and became a Toastmaster. He later took a sabbatical to complete his education, and then returned to Toastmasters as a member of the New Providence Branch of Toastmasters Club 3596, where he later served as club president. Through hard work as an area governor, he qualified for the organization’s highest educational and leadership designation, DTM (Distinguished Toastmaster). Damien was admired as a talented orator and revered as a “tough to beat” speech contestant. He represented Division I on numerous occasions in the Table Topics, Evaluation and International Speech contests. I can recall occasions when in preparation for his Saturday night contest, a group of us would connect with him around 11 p.m. Friday and have him rehearse and fine-tune his speech until 2 a.m. He won the International Speech Contest on numerous occasions, thereby earning the opportunity to represent District 47 at the Region 8 contest. Although he fell short of his ultimate goal of winning the World Championship of Public Speaking, he successfully etched his name in the annals of history as one of the all-time great orators from across our district. A Warm Spirit, a Generous Heart Always exuding a warm and engaging personality – punctuated by his radiant smile and distinctive laughter – DTM Miller was unselfish with his gifts of TIME, TALENTS & TREASURES. Time: He volunteered as a coach to numerous Toastmasters clubs and as a mentor to countless individual members. He served on many committees at the club, area, division and district levels. In recent years, he rose to the position of lieutenant governor in District 47. Talents: He entertained and educated us through his world-class speeches and his analytical evaluations. In 2012, when our district's Fall Conference was held in The Bahamas for the first time in some 15 years, Damien accepted the role as conference chair. His skillfulness as a professional destination manager and meeting planner was in full effect, the end-result being one of the best district conferences ever! Treasures: He gave of his treasures by sharing his financial resources willingly in support of the movement. I can recall a time I was at Damien's office along with another senior member for a meeting. You will be learning more about it in the upcoming months at Toastmasters Leadership Institutes, district conferences and club meetings. We have a team of Pathways ambassadors who will be visiting your club soon to tell you more about Pathways as it is rolled out globally this month. District 47 is in the final rollout, which should occur by early 2018. We will have two years from rollout to fully transition to the new program. Embracing Change Many of our members have questions and concerns about the use of technology for program access — a valid concern for those who may be "tech challenged." Whether in your family or in your workplace, change is often not quickly or easily embraced. A large part of that is because the benefit beyond the barrier is often not seen. Features Online Presenters Club

New Club Adds a Tech-Savvy Twist

By David F. Carr, ACS, ALB President, Online Presenters The Online Presenters Toastmasters club submitted its charter paperwork on March 1, following six weeks of demonstration meetings. I wouldn't be surprised if, within a year, the club starts to get too big and we will have to split off a second club. Online Presenters takes the traditional Toastmasters formula and adds a twist: We focus on skills needed for webinars and online meetings, where the technology we use is both an enabler (broadcast to people all over the world!) and a distraction (which button do I push to share my screen?). Where I hope the Toastmasters club will help me and others is by getting us past the initial jitters of presenting in this format. Knowing what types of things can go wrong, we ought to become more confident and resilient (both emotionally and technically) so we get the job done, smoothly if possible but showing grace under pressure if necessary. I am a professional writer and editor, formerly (and still sometimes) a technology journalist, and for me, joining Toastmasters was an excuse to get better at communicating on my feet rather than from behind a keyboard. After signing up in 2010, I soon became vice president education and then president of Club Awesome Toastmasters in Coral Springs. One of my contributions to the club was to retool its website on WordPress, and the work I did developed into the open source WordPress for Toastmasters project.

Last fall, as part of a fundraising effort for District 47, I put together a series of webinars and secured sponsorship from PwC Digital Services, which has a corporate Toastmasters club. When looking to a follow-up to this program, it occurred to me a natural angle of a Toastmasters webinar might be to put the focus on webinar and online broadcasting skills. By Ruth Field Beck, ACB,CL, and Ed Lamont, DTM Bill Gove Golden Gavel Club The highlight of the Bill Gove Golden Gavel Club’s 17th-anniversary meeting was a video of Bill Gove himself, delivering his 1991 Golden Gavel Award acceptance speech. The Golden Gavel Award is the highest award given by Toastmasters to an individual internationally recognized for communication and leadership excellence. Gove, CSP, earned every major speaking award in the industry – no wonder he was known as the father of professional speaking! Gove helped establish The Bill Gove Speech Workshop, one of the world’s most prestigious public speaking courses. The Golden Gavel Club was established shortly after he passed away in 2001.

Club News First Bahamas Branch Bahamas

In Spirit of Kindness and Competition Club comes together for two memorable events By Ancin Munnings, ACB, ALB VP Public Relations Clothing Drive: The First Bahamas Branch of Toastmasters Club 1600, in collaboration with the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority, conducted a clothing drive benefiting the Great Commission Ministries (GCM), a local non-profit organization that provides clothing, food and shelter for the poor while also operating programs for youth in the inner city communities. For the clothing drive, called It Suits You, Members of Club 1600 donated suits and other business wear so that proper attire will not be an issue for a man who seeks a job to provide for himself and or his family. The donations were happily accepted by coordinators at GCM, who eagerly await future assistance from Club 1600 in the Club President Chervez Brown (center) and Treasurer Edward Thurston (far right) with representatives of Alpha near future.

Table Tennis Tournament: Flash-like reflexes and intense competition were on display when Club 1600 held its 35th annual J.C. Sweeting Table Tennis Tournament at the YWCA Hall on Dolphin Drive. Competitors battled for a top prize and a year’s worth of bragging rights at the family fun day, a muchanticipated event. The tournament is named after well-respected club member J.C. Sweeting, ALB. In the Children’s Division, Joshua Sweeting captured gold. Mikia Cooper, CC, CL, finished top in the Ladies Division. Patrick Colebrook posted a first-place finish in the Friends of Toastmasters category, while Clement Foster, DTM, successfully defended his crown in the Past Presidents Division. Winners of the Toastmasters Divisions A and B were Godfrey Springer, DTM; and Edward Thurston, CC, ALB, respectively. Competitors in the 35th annual J.C. Sweeting Table Tennis Tournament. 13

Online Presenters (Continued from Page 11) and accidentally sharing the wrong screen. But at the same time, I was learning a lot and enjoying the process. Meanwhile, I had been introduced to the subculture of online Toastmasters clubs. It took a few months, but I convinced myself to try launching an online club. I pulled a few people together for an initial organizing session in early January, and we began weekly demonstration meetings January 23. Getting the Word Out

Already, we were attracting interest from people who had never been part of Toastmasters, but we were required to charter as an advanced club. That meant we needed to convince at least 20 busy professionals to make room for yet another Toastmasters activity in their lives. As is always the way, first we had to get them to know of our existence. I exploited a few "unfair advantages" like the opportunity to mention the club in formation in my article for Forbes. The first Online Presenters demo meetings also happened as I was promoting the district webinars, so whenever someone RSVP'ed for one of those events, they got a cross-promotion for replays of the other webinars and for Online Presenters. One of my consulting clients, RingCentral, agreed to sponsor Visit the club at https://op.toastmost.org a RingCentral Meetings account for us, sparing us the expense of subscribing to such a service. In addition, I searched my LinkedIn connections and sent messages to those who had some sort of Toastmasters connection. We got our 20th member shortly after our February 20 meeting and had 23 when I pulled all the paperwork together prior to the February 27 meeting where we elected officers. Another a half-dozen people have made verbal commitments to joining in the coming weeks. I suspect we will be at 30+ by the end of March, 40+ by the end of April. I believe Online Presenters has an opportunity to recruit from digital-savvy presenters who may never have heard of Toastmasters or just never considered the traditional Toastmasters program relevant to their work or their interests. If we can get those people, I'm sure they will have a few things to teach us, and we will be able to help them also.

Damien (Continued from Page 9) to. Damien did not want this member to miss what would have been their first conference experience. With much compassion, he laid out his plan; the other person and I pitched in and through our collective effort, the member made it to Florida and had a phenomenal experience — and the matter never exited Damien's boardroom. I last spoke with Damien on the morning of December 21, 2016, when he returned my calls from the previous day, which was his birthday. I wished him a happy birthday and we spoke for a short while. Little did I know that his final words in his usual polite manner could have been taken literally: "Good-bye, Longs, thank you for calling." I am reminded of the words of the renowned speaker and author, Zig Ziglar: "The best way to get what you want out of life, is to help enough people get what they want out of life!" During his 37 short years on earth, Damien's life of servitude has gotten him more out of life than many have derived in 70 years. On behalf of my family, I extend condolences to Damien’s family and associates and his Toastmasters family in The Bahamas, Florida and beyond! I pray that his legacy will give solace to all who mourn. May his soul rest in peace until our spirits reunite in the after-life. AMEN! 14

The Best of the Best Compete The winter-spring contest season has begun and the competition is heating up. Areas are wrapping up their rounds of the Intenational Speech and Table Topics contests. The divisions will send their winners in each contest to the Spring Conference, April 22-23 in Miami. The International Speech winner will go on to represent the district at the World Championship of Public Speaking at the International Convention, scheduled for August 23-26 in Vancouver, British Columbia.
