Edgarton Christian Academy’s 1:1 Technology Initiative for Education Policy and Information Rationale: It is Edgarton Christian Academy’s (ECA) goal to remain current with instructional best practices thus ensuring that our students are well prepared for their futures. In today’s world, technology is an important aspect of that preparation. We therefore recognize that seamlessly embedding technology into the learning experience as we guide our children to become responsible and appropriate digital citizens is a priority. The availability of technological devices and the ability to function in the digital realm, especially with regards to the “work share” concept, the ability to conduct research, the ability to perform digital experiments, and the analysis of data, is vital and comprises the bones of authentic work tasks. Authentic work tasks, real work performed in real time for real purposes, enhance learning with regards to the development of problem solving and critical thinking. The expectation is that with daily practice the purpose-driven use of digital technology will become tacit as the learner is immersed in its regular use at as early an age as is academically and developmentally practical. To attain this level of tacit familiarity our students will be assigned a portable computer for their personal and educational use throughout the school year. Since the students will be able to take this device home, they will have full access to the technology required to assist with their assignments. They will also have to demonstrate digital maturity as they learn how to use this device in their personal lives. The best system for delivering this experience is provided through Chromebooks and the Google Apps for Education Program. This system is easily managed by the school to maximize student safety and is economical to purchase especially when compared to the expenses associated with Microsoft and Apple products. Therefore Edgarton Christian Academy is providing each child in grades 5 through 8 with a Chromebook that will enable us to meet this goal. As your child’s partner in education, your support and cooperation is critical to ensure that this program is successful. Below are outlined rules with some information that is designed to ensure your child’s safety, the efficacy of the program, and the integrity of the equipment. Students must: 1. 2. 3.

4. 5. 6.

7. 8.

Follow the Acceptable Use Policy found in the Student Handbook and included in this policy and agreement. Treat the Chromebook with care and respect. You must recharge your Chromebook at home every night. We do not have charging capacity here at the school. You may not charge your Chromebook at school. Forgetting to come to class with your Chromebook charged is tantamount to being “unprepared for class”. Consequences may be assigned if you are unprepared for class. Keep your Chromebook in the Neoprene case when you are not using it or when you are carrying it between classes. Do not put your Chromebook in your book bag without the protective case. Report any damage or malfunction of the Chromebook to your teacher and the Technology Coordinator as soon as you notice it. You will not be in trouble if you report the damage immediately. Do not lend your Chromebook to another student. Do not tell anyone your password. The school has your password if you have difficulty with that.

You must clearly understand that the Chromebooks are the property of the school and that you should have no expectation of privacy with regards to the content and files on or associated with your Chromebook. Do not log onto any inappropriate websites. You cannot erase your history and the school always has access to all the sites that you visit. Random and periodic checks of Chromebooks will occur without prior notification. Do not attempt to circumvent any security measures that have been installed or embedded in your Chromebook. Do not use your email or other forms of communication that may be available on your Chromebook to send messages that are in anyway inappropriate, unfriendly, or threatening. Report any inappropriate or upsetting emails or other forms of contact to your teacher, the Technology Coordinator and your parents immediately. This can include but not be limited to bullying emails, name calling, material that is sexual in content, content that you do not recognize as originating from you but is located on your Chromebook, or anything you find on your Chromebook that just does not feel right. Respect and follow all copyright and intellectual property laws. Do not plagiarize the work of others by downloading information and using it as if it were your own work. You may paraphrase information and you may use direct quotes but you must always credit the author or the source. Use your Chromebook for schoolwork only. Use appropriate language in all communications. The Chromebooks are on loan to you for the time you are a student at ECA. The Chromebooks and their content are the property of Edgarton Christian Academy. While you are able to stream music and movies, you may not download apps for games or other programs unless you file a form with Mrs. Meehan and obtain her permission.

Parents must: 1.

2.

3. 4.

5. 6. 7.

Understand that the Chromebooks and the files stored on them or any associative storage devices including any cloud storage accounts and Google Drive which are sponsored/funded by ECA are considered the property of ECA and may be subject to review, monitoring (without prior notice) and disciplinary action. Supervise the use of the Chromebooks when in use at home by having the children use them in a location of high visibility where the child’s use can be observed. While there are deep and vast security measures embedded on the Chromebooks when being used at school, they are limited when the children are home. Monitor the time the children are on their Chromebooks. Until we are able to install “timer” software, your child has 24 hours access to this device. The students are able to stream music and movies using their Chromebooks. Parents must be sure that parental controls are in place on their movie accounts (i.e., Netflix, Prime, etc.). If your account does not have parental controls, your child will be able to stream any movie they choose. Students are permitted to download apps from the Chrome Store. However they must complete a form to be submitted to Mrs. Meehan who will approve the download if it is appropriate. Report any mishaps or concerns you have with the Chromebooks to the school immediately. Assume responsibility for: a. Replacing missing/lost Chromebooks (see costs below) b. Filing a police report for stolen Chromebooks c. Replacing the Chromebooks that are damaged beyond repair (see costs below) d. Assuming the cost of expensive repairs that result from the inappropriate treatment of the Chromebook.

School Security Information When students are using Chromebooks on school premises, they are protected through limits and filters set specifically on our network and on the children’s Chromebooks. While on our campus, we have strict control of the material that can be downloaded, accessed, or received. Additionally, the Chromebooks are always used in a supervised setting. While on our campus, students can only send emails to and receive emails from

Policy Edited 8-23-17

other students or the school staff. The only Google Account they can log onto is our Google Apps for Education account. Our Technology Coordinator has complete administrative authority over all Chromebooks. Furthermore, the Chromebooks are owned by ECA and all files stored on the school’s equipment/devices or on any school issued storage location (e.g., clouds, Google Drive, etc.) are the property of the school and may be subject to review, monitoring (without prior notice), and disciplinary action. Home Security Information When students are home, they are accessing the Internet through an open network, which means that there may not be filters on your network connections. The network protection that applies to the Chromebooks while being used in school does not carry over to the home, however there are restrictions and filters on the Chromebooks which will not permit access to sites that are considered inappropriate. While at home as in school, the students can only log-on to their school email accounts from their Chromebooks which means that they cannot send emails to or receive emails from outside email accounts. However despite all these safeguards, you are your child’s best insurance against dangerous or inappropriate use of the Chromebooks while at home through your supervision and scrutiny. Disclaimer The Chromebooks have a webcam and tracking capabilities. We will never use these capabilities or the ability to remotely access the Chromebooks, to store information, or obtain information in a manner that would violate the privacy rights of the student or any individual residing with the student. However, students are again reminded that these devices are owned by the school and all files stored on school equipment or any school issued storage location are the property of the school and may be subject to review, monitoring (without prior notice), and disciplinary action. This is the third year of the 1:1 Technological Initiative Program. As we work to ensure the safety of students, the integrity of their digital citizenship, and proper care and treatment of the equipment, we may find a need to revise or make additions to these policies or rules. If this occurs, you will be advised of this in writing. However in the event some unanticipated aspects of this program are not covered in this policy, refer to personal prudent behavior and common sense as the best guides for appropriate use with regards to Internet safety, digital courtesy, and the proper treatment and care of the Chromebook.

This fee schedule applies to all Chromebooks whether it is the Lenovo or the Acer:     

APPROPRIATE USE OF TECHNOLOGY POLICY For your convenience, information regarding the Appropriate Use of Technology Policy for ECA as stated in our Student Handbook has been copied here. In brief, the students are not permitted to use their personal electronic devices at any time during school with the exception of 8th grade. The rules for the “8th grade privilege” are listed below. If a student brings a cell phone to school it is to remain off in their locker. The expectation of proper behavior with regards to the use of any electronic device applies to all circumstances unconditionally whether it is a personal device or a school owned device. Today students have unprecedented access to technology. There are inherent challenges surrounding this access specifically to do with appropriate behavior regarding social media and digital communications. In order to protect your children, the following rules have been adopted and will be strictly enforced.

Technology Acceptable Use Policy All users of technology equipment and services at Edgarton Christian Academy are required to abide by the terms of the Acceptable Use Policy. This policy covers the proper use of Edgarton Christian Academy technology equipment in regard to safe and proper use, violation of any local, site or federal rule or regulation and the exploration or transmittal of information that conflicts with Christian moral values. This policy is distributed to each family and, once signed, will remain in effect as long as the student remains at the school. A copy of this agreement can be viewed at the end of this handbook. This policy in addition to the rules, guidelines, and requirements regarding the use of technology and it components provides a comprehensive description of what is deemed acceptable and appropriate when using devices of technology in the school. This policy includes the use of all the school’s computers, visiting inappropriate websites, dissemination of inappropriately generated materials, sharing of personal information inappropriately, violating a staff member’s, family’s or student’s privacy through the inappropriate posting of information in text or visual media will not be tolerated. Additionally:  No student may photograph or take a video of another student during school hours, on the bus, during Before and After Care, or at a school related activity. This is a violation of privacy and may, under certain circumstances, be a violation of the law.  No student may post or email any pictures of students to the Internet for any reason. This is a violation of privacy and may, under certain circumstances, be a violation of the law.  No student may make an audio recording of any student, teacher, lesson, or activity conducted at the school or during the school day, or on the bus, or at Before and After Care, or during a school sponsored activity.

Policy Edited 8-23-17

   

No student may photograph textbooks, classwork, assessments, tests, homework or other materials or work products. This could be a violation of proprietary rights, copyright laws, or considered cheating. No student may email, text, share, or in any way communicate, associate, indicate or imply in a written or graphic manner negative or threatening statements regarding any student or any staff member. The police will be notified and charges will be filed. No student may download Apps, or other programs from the Internet onto any other student’s electronic device or onto their devices without written permission. No student may use his or her electronic device during class time. No student may use his or her electronic devices on the playground during recess or playtime. No student may borrow or lend their electronic devices to other students.

Violations of the above rules will be remanded to the principal for disposition and in the case of clear violations of the law, will be remanded to the police.

ADDITIONAL APPROPRIATE USE INFO ECA encourages the use of student email as an effective and efficient way to improve communication between students, faculty members, and administrative staff. The primary purpose of student e-mail is to support teaching and learning. An Edgarton Christian Academy email account is housed on a Google mail server giving student access to Google Apps for Education (word processing, spreadsheets, and presentation software).

Official E-mail Address:

Each child in 5th through 8th grade has been assigned an ECA student e-mail account. This account will be considered the student’s official ECA email address until such time as the student is no longer enrolled in ECA. In using these email accounts student must follow all the rules and responsibilities set forth in the ECA Computer Acceptable Use Policy. Students will only be able to send email to and receive email from teachers and students within ECA. These emails will be regularly monitored.

Prohibited Conduct:

In addition to any prohibitions set forth in the ECA Computer Acceptable Use Policy, student email may not be used in the following ways:  Unlawful activities  Commercial purposes  Personal financial gain  False identity in email communications  Misrepresentation of ECA  Interference with ECA technology operations through o Electronic chain letters o Unsolicited electronic communications o Disruption of electronic communications

Access Restriction:

Access to and use of student email is considered a privilege accorded at the discretion of ECA. The School maintains the right to immediately withdraw Policy Edited 8-23-17

the access and use of student email when there is a reason to believe that a student has engaged in any of the prohibited conduct set forth above or has otherwise violated the law or the Rules and Responsibilities set forth in the ECA Computer Acceptable Use Policy. In such cases, the alleged violation will be referred to the Principal for further investigation and adjudication.

Privacy:

Users of student email are strictly prohibited from accessing files and information other than their own. The School reserves the right to access the ECA Google Mail System including current and archival files of user accounts.

THE CELL PHONE, IPOD AND TABLET DEVICES POLICY Cell phones are a modern day requirement for the safety and convenience for many families. However while a child is safe at school there is no need for a child to use his or her cell phone. If you need to contact your child, you may call the office to leave a message for him or her. If your child needs to contact you, we will assist with that. The following are guidelines for cell phone usage in school:    

 

All cell phones are to remain turned off at all times during school hours and remain in the student’s locker. No one is permitted to use his/her cell phone without permission by the faculty or staff during school hours. No student is permitted to call a parent during school hours because they feel sick and want to go home. Ill students must report to the office or to the nurse who will make the determination regarding whether a parent must be notified. Students can use cell phones after 3pm dismissal for the purpose of calling parents only. They may not place social calls while in school or during a school activity. They may not engage in social texting while in school or during a school activity. They may not use them as entertainment while in after school activities. Parents are not to text or use cell phones to contact their children during the day. Call the school and we will get your message to your child. Students are not permitted to share their cell phones with other students. If a fellow student needs to use a phone, direct that student to the teacher or to the office.

 Ipods, and tablets (such as Ipads, Nexus tablets, Kindle Fire Tablets, etc.) are part of current day life. We recognize their importance and value in the children’s lives; however, they are not to be used during the school day or during Before and After Care for any reason.

ELECTRONIC GAMES/TOYS

Policy Edited 8-23-17

No electronic/digital games, tablets, DS’s, etc. are permitted during Before and After Care, during lunch recess, and during class time. If a student brings in these items they will be confiscated and returned to the parents. Disclaimer – The school is not responsible for the loss of or damage to any personal electronic device brought into the school including but not limited to Ipods, tablets, phones, DS’s, eReaders, etc. Children bring their personal devices to school at their own risk.

EIGHTH GRADE PRIVILEGE AND THE USE OF IPODS Eighth grade ONLY is permitted to have Ipods only for personal use during Before or After Care. They are to be stored in the student’s locker during all other times. Devices that are solely used as E-Readers, such as a Kindle e-book, may be used in lunch study hall under the study hall teacher’s supervision. The study hall teacher may request to examine the screen of the device at any time to ensure that only appropriate reading material is being viewed. Abuse of the above stated rules and policies will result in: 1st offense - Warning with cell phone or other technology device being confiscated and held in the office until it is picked up by a parent 2nd offense - 3 days detention 3rd offense - Suspension or removal from school
