2016 Spring Fling Ride 5-Day Away Ride on Florida’s East Coast This was a 5-day cycling event that involved 194 miles of bike riding from Titusville to Vero Beach and return involving 24 riders and 4 hotel check-in/outs.

This trip would have not been possible without the planning and leadership of Sandy Larson and the four SAG drivers & their vehicles to haul the luggage of the cyclists. The SAG drivers were Jim Hurt, Ethel Rogers, Peggy Thompson, and John Weber. A special thanks to Peggy Thompson for running the snack pool for 5 happy hours on the trip.

Daily Log: Day 1: Arrive at the Holiday Inn in Titusville in time for group happy hour and group dinner. Day 2: Cycle from Titusville to the Hampton Inn in Cocoa Beach. 38 miles cycling with stops at the Visitors’ Center at the Kennedy Space Center and lunch at Port Canaveral. Day 3: 62 mile ride down highway A1A to the Holiday Inn on the beach at Vero Beach. A long hot ride with headwind. The temperature reached 94 degrees and a few cyclists finished the ride in a SAG wagon. Day 4: Planned ride for the day was rained out. If we had to have a day of rain, this was the day for it because we were scheduled to be at the same hotel for two consecutive nights. Day 5: 62 mile ride up highway A1A to the Hampton Inn at Cocoa Beach. A 10 degree cooler day than day 3. Day 6: 32 mile ride back to the Holiday Inn in Titusville where we parked our cars. Then return home. Only one flat tire on the entire trip. One nasty fall by Sandy on day 3. Sandy hit a bump on the path followed by a patch of sand. She was almost stopped when she fell and there was major damage to her MIPS-technology helmet. She had a headache through the next day. There are photos of the cracks in the helmet and the path bump/sand patch.
